Love it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This course is located on private property, far away from noisy cities and has beautiful views of nature throughout.
- Good amount of shot variety that includes some elevation changes, backhand/forehand shots, doglegs, tunnels and open fields.
- Plenty of challenge, between length of holes, technicality and even water on a few holes.
- Brand new El Guapo baskets are color coded with the tee signs, making them easier to identify.
- Great flow and design, good use of land
- Lots of solitude, you will likely be the only person even on a nice weekend day

Cons:

- I don't mind AstroTurf tee pads but these see very thick and not completely level beneath. A minor issue but not completely ideal.
- No benches or trash cans to my memory
- The "tee signs" are odd looking, geometrically shaped objects with no info about hole length or shape, granted that info can be found on the map.
- As the course designer warned it was a little rough, with grass getting longer. In then end it wasn't bad but I could see how it could be nice with a fresh mow.

Other Thoughts:

This course is great, although I almost didn't find it. I was coming from the beach and after two hours of travel google maps had me drive up a dirt road for about 5 miles, only to get to a locked gate. At this point I had no service and was trying to drive around very sketchy dirt roads attempting to find the place. It took another hour of driving around country back roads, getting to dead ends and then finally finding the place. Make sure you come in off the main highway in town and not from the backside towards the west.

Favorite holes: Hole 5 was amazingly long for a par 3 but I liked it. Hole 11 is very challenging, requires a great upshot in order to shoot over the creek. Hole 12 has an angle that most people will not hit, you need to force over an overstable sidearm shot (if you are right handed), going around a tree to the right, then have it flex to the left, only to finish right at the end.

Out in the country 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's a very quiet and scenic place to spend 2 to 4 hours playing a round or 2. Great El Guapo baskets that allow putts to slide over the rim rather than get caught on a nub and spit back out. The 18 baskets alternate colors, playing 1st to red, then white, then blue, then repeat. this really helps when you're new to the course and see more than one basket off the tee. the turf tee pads aren't perfect, but generally very adequate. Some are a little bumpy. Eddy is a very gracious host, has worked hard to make this a nice place to throw the disc. He followed along with us explaining the course and spotting and showing us the preferred landing zones. He encouraged us to offer him pointers on how to improve the course. There is a good variety of holes, long, short, open, tightly wooded, some with OB involved, some favoring backhand, others forehand, and a couple that I think a roller is best, plus a couple of holes that require a well placed drive to put you in the slot for a tight dogleg, and putting the disc into position off the tee to clear the notorious Bummer Creek on the 2nd shot and hope for a 3 (hope). A couple of par 4s if I recall, so all round good variety and a pleasant walk in the country. Also, us old timers and kids get to play for free, 62 and over and not sure on the age to qualify as a kid.

Cons:

Much of the grounds are very lumpy, rutted and with holes and just enough wavy grass to cover the holes and ruts, so watch your step, and your approach shots so you don't fall or twist something. There are some real opportunities to lose a disc (not so bad) but you should be fine if you have a spotter on a few of the holes.

Other Thoughts:

With Eddy's passion and desire for input on course improvement this course will improve. It's a lonely place out there, which can be good, but give Eddy some support and encouragement on this course that he has worked so hard to make. Come out and play.

Bummer Creek DGC In No Bummer! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Bummer Creek DGC sits on 22 acres of central Oregon farmland with the small Bummer Creek running through it. It's mostly pasture land without much elevation. Owner Eddy retired and decided to build himself a disc golf course. His wife Mary doesn't quite understand his obsession but that's OK, my wife doesn't quite understand what the hell I'm doing here in Alsea, Oregon chasing courses. For targets Eddy cut three distinct shapes out of wood and painted them red, white and blue. So hole # 1 is red circle, hole 2 in white triangle and hole 3 is a blue square (actually rectangles) and follows this red-white-blue pattern throughout the course.

Hole # 1 starts between the barn and home. The tee boxes are each marked by four markers in the grass. Some are a little difficult to locate in the taller grass. There is a donation box at the start with a $5 contribution asked for. Another box contains laminated course maps. Please return them upon course completion. You, however, will not be given a certificate of course completion. If you want one, you could probably print off your own online. I don't think they're needed all that much but I did like seeing the distances.

The course plays at a basic recreational level with hole lengths ranging from 225' up to about 450'. Many are open and most are fairly straightforward with nothing too tricky and not many places to get into much trouble. The neighbor's fence does come into play on a couple of holes. The hole across Bummer Creek only requires a short (maybe 75') carry. The front 9 ends just in front of the House and then # 18 finishes back at the house.

Cons:

The targets are OK but they don't compare to baskets.

I found the footing in the fields to be kind of uncomfortable as you're walking over all these grassy clumps.

Bummer Creek is probably not on anyone's required visitors list. I drove here from the next nearest course, Alpine's Ninth Hole which is listed as being only 12 miles away. Maybe a crow could fly here in 12 miles but my Google maps took me on a 20 mile foray through some slow National Park roads.

No signage.

Natural tees could possibly get muddy with weather but actually the entire course with it's hayfield grass would be pretty wet during Oregon's wet months.

Other Thoughts:

Eddy, all by himself, has put together a nice little course here. It's been a lot hard work and just mowing it all must consume a lot of time. Unfortunately, courses without baskets don't win any popularity contests and Bummer Creek falls into that category. With baskets it would be a fairly average course but sans baskets, it falls to slightly below average at 2.0.

Bummer creek disc golf course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful property.
Mowed fairways.
Course lay out is pretty easy to follow, even without the provided map.
Good range of distances.
Cool, custom "baskets"( "3D" shapes).
Great place to go and feel relaxed at.
Friendly dogs on property.
Friendly owners.

Cons:

Tee pads are grass and sort of difficult to see from afar, but they are in good placement and slipping is not an issue(maybe when winter comes around). Nice and flat surface for run-ups.

Not much parking available right now, it seems, but easy to stay out of the way of the course.

Other Thoughts:

I loved the course, and will be finding myself returning frequently, during weekends. Nice and quiet location to just enjoy nature and throwing some discs. Eddy (and Mary) seem like great people. 5$ suggested donation is well worth it.
