Visually Stunning! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

One of the most attractive courses I have ever played. Great visuals on some holes, as lone photo shows the yellow basket on 18 is something to be seen.

The actual course is rated above average, minimal elevation changes and some wide open prairie holes. It is well kept, mowed and a healthy green color which is always welcomed.

The cool features about this course are the extras... Mandatory wall on #2, various Sand Traps marked OB, the new island hole on #17, the closing work of art basket on #18. Baskets tucked behind trees, placed in ground bowls, all kinds of fun holes.

With 2 tee pads (long & short) as well as 2 sets of baskets (blue-short, yellow-long), this course offers any length you want to play. Very cool way to make the most of 18 holes.

This course is some what set-up to let you drive wide open, and then it narrows considerably at the hole, making for tough approach shots on some holes. Nice concept.

Cons:

Most of these are minor, but cons none the less...

Lack of signage at hole #1 left some doubt on where to go. Hidden behind trees, was unsure at first but once I found no more problem.

The cost, just not a fan of getting hit double to play. First you need to drop $5 per car to get in park, then another $4 per golfer to play. For just 18 holes it might be a negative, played 36 since I already paid. Not a fan of getting double hit to play, either I pay to get in park or pay to play, but both can be a negative.

Little confusing to a new player or new to course, trying to find where to go to next tee. They have some nice signs to get you from one tee to the next. First time thru a little overwhelmed, second time it was much easier and no problem at all.

Other Thoughts:

From the signs, it appears this course is now called "The Devil's Den". Maybe opted to name it after putting in River's Edge 18 hole course.

Heard a lot of people on course, saw people on course, but didnt run into many groups while playing. Seemed to space everyone out nicely and flowed great!

Aprox 30 minutes from my house and I plan to play this course a lot more. Very fun course, variety for all skill levels. Very creative use of land and of OB's to make round more challenging. Hats off Burchfield, job well done!

best in Lansing 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic- plays through a multi use park but the disc golf seems secluded from the rest of the world. which is great

Navigation-Very easy!! tons of next tee signs paths are very well worn/cut grass to lead the way.

Signage- Big bright and easy to follow. lists all four distances between the two tees. some are in poor repair though.

teepads- long and concrete, maybe about 1/3 bigger than they need to be.

baskets-grippy discatchers with powdercoat. how could it get better?

Originality- #17 is an island where you have to land in the "sand trap" or be OB (not the original layout) but very short.
#18 has one of the more beautiful "greens" in DG. #2 has a 10' wall mando.

Pin placement-Impecable. protected pins abound and keep the game seriously ineresting...

Cons:

Repetition- this is hard. the course is great, but there isn't much challenge without much elevation change or trees. the challenge in this course is the course itself and the length it's capable of.

Risk v Reward- As said above, there isn't much

Other Thoughts:

the original course is better than the newest course but when it's completed, Rivers Edge will give the original a run for it's money!

Mixed feelings 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 22, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a sprawling park, and the course doesn't have any real interference with other park activities. There is a nice secluded feel to several parts of the course, it's always nice to feel like you're out away from civilization. There are two tees and two baskets per hole, offering a lot of variety and chances to mix things up. The biggest difference on many holes is distance (large differences on many holes between the longest and shortest layouts), but a few of the tighter holes offer some different lines.

The fairways were mowed nicely, and the course was generally in good condition when I played. There are some nice touches, like a large wall and some small water hazards that add a little variety. There are some ace run type shots and some long bombers where you can open up and rip a drive. A few holes have enough trees to make you hit some interesting lines. Some minor elevation comes into play. The signage is adequate enough to follow the course and know where to throw.

Cons:

I'm not a huge fan of prairie courses, long grass (especially when thorns are involved) adds more frustration than challenge in my opinion. Too many of the holes play basically wide open with only wind and long grass to contend with, just not my favorite type of shot. There are a handful of spots where the alternate baskets and tees are really creative, but on the whole they just offer longer and shorter versions of the same line. Several of the longer holes' tee signs are a bit misleading, the hole layouts don't match the signs all that well which can be a bit frustrating on an 800'+ hole.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find the shortest layout challenging, but not so much that it's too terribly frustrating. Newer players might not be big fans of the rough, especially with wind and less accurate drives. The longest setup offers a lot of distance, and a few interesting challenges. Experienced players will enjoy the chance to air out some drives and work on shot placement, but there aren't a ton of line shaping skills required here. The layouts in between offer a nice balance so there's something available for most skill levels.

The best in the Lansing Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great variety in distance
- 4 ways to play every hole mixes it up.
- great mix of open holes and woody narrow holes
- cool features like a 10 foot wall and OB sand traps.
- Very well taken care of
-soon to be another 18 hole course on the property

Cons:

- None really that are worth not playing this course, like others said the rough and ob areas can be dangerous, wear pants.

Other Thoughts:

just a really fun and difficult course. A lot of love and effort was put into this gem, I will definently be buying a season pass.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is laid out very well. Nicely manicured areas and great landscaping around each hole and down the fairways.
The course is pretty 'open' with only a few holes within trees.
Great signage and pointers to all the tee boxes and pins.
Super friendly staff that drive around and ask for input and how the course is playing for you that day.

Cons:

Price - Sure, the course isn't that expensive and the cost goes towards the upkeep of the course itself. Lots of areas to mow, maintain, and such. However, $4 dollars to play for each person + the cost to actually get into the park (which is $3 for Ingham County residents and a bit more for non-residents). $7.00 to play could turn off a few players. But it is still worth it.

Some of the holes are super long, which could be a turn off to a few players. The longest hole (in the long tee to long basket setup) is 1019 feet. Wow.

The tee-pads are different than what I'm used to playing. Only about 2.5-3 feet wide, but 10 feet long. I'm used to maybe 4-5 feet wide and about 7-8 feet long. Not particularly bad, but threw me off at first.

The banner which gives details about the course before the first tee pad is littered with grammatical errors which, of course, doesn't hamper the course at all, but it does look bad as it is missing words, adds too many in (like "into to"), and has numerous misspelled words. Just doesn't look good at all. *I say this knowing that my review here could contain some grammatical mistakes, but I'm going to go out on a limb and state that mine aren't nearly as obvious or 'bad' as the banner at Burchfield.

Other Thoughts:

I just moved up to Mason, MI from Columbia, SC and decided to check this course out this past Saturday (9/3/2011). I can honestly say that this is the best course I've ever played.

I haven't played on that many courses, but compared to those courses (most being in SC, but also in NC and one other in MI) this is a great course. Four different ways to play with some pretty iconic holes. That 10 foot wall on hole 2 is pretty daunting and the 18th basket up on the water-feature is just picturesque.

Very well maintained, awesome staff that plays and cares about the course/game as well, and from what I'm used to awesome weather. All this and more combine to make a wonderful course just outside of Lansing, MI

Tons of Fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 3, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- great options with long/short pins/tees
- lots of nicely designed holes
- variety of short/long holes
- well marked posts (good map on their website too)
- has not seemed to get backed up when I am there
- only one hole where discs would get lost in water
- they have new tee signs that show the layout for both long and short setups. Great addition!
- there are maps and score cards at the first hole now!

Cons:

- some rough looks like it can get very rough
- some pins are pretty well hidden from view for first timers (take a map)
- a couple of long pin to long tee holes are SUPER LONG which takes some fun out of it (so we just play short)

Other Thoughts:

I love this course, it's my new favorite. The course if beautiful and well designed. Many of the holes have interesting landscaping and obstacles on them. (like the 10 ft wall!)

I'll be playing here a ton since I live so close...this is a wonderful place with lots of variety. There's also an awesome park all around it with boating, fishing, hiking and a playground. And in the winter you can go sledding/tobogganing too!

** New tee signs are a nice addition, along with the course maps and score cards that they have at the first hole. These show me that they are constantly improving and maintaining this course.

New Course needs some maturing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 9, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-2 pads and 2 baskets on every hole makes for multiple ways to play the course
-long tee pads
-scorecards
-nice baskets
-sand traps
-massive course

Cons:

-no tee signs
-the rough is ruff, legs get torn up quick (one of the worst roughs I've seen
-its pretty much a wide open course, big gaps for lines
-lots of pricker bushes and usually the basket isn't far from them
-also poison ivy flourishes in the shady areas if allergic
-hole one can be confusing if you haven't played before..goes up the hill not down

Other Thoughts:

I think this course charges too much. Like flip City is one dollar and so is Mason , also some courses like Coldbrook are $5 per car both are fine. I don't mind paying but this course is both and 4 times the charge of Flip City. They don't have a course that warrants this yet. Like charge by car or make it pay to play. This course isn't top of the line and they charge like they are the best. I liked the course but it needs a few more things and some years to get worked in before its top notch. We played Grand Woods and here today and everyone agreed Grand Woods is a better course.

Pay to play worth the $$ 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 2 sets of tees/pins per hole, meaning you can play 4 rounds on the same course and play differently each time. Which also means the course can cater to people of various skill levels.
- Course design allows for many elevation changes to come into play.
- A park employee was making rounds selling assorted snacks and drinks, very nice on a hot day.
- The great landscaping and layout gave it a very traditional and authentic golf course feel.
- Pay to play keeps course traffic down to much more manageable levels

Cons:

- The scrub brush surrounding some of the fairways is very easy to lose a wayward shot in.
- We had difficulty finding the first tee, and most of the maps on the holes were not installed when we went through.
- The layout can be confusing at times and the map on the scorecard doesn't offer many landmarks to be a reliable positioning reference.
- The bathroom by the first hole is air-conditioned, but there seems to be no public drinking water available on the course, save for by the parking lot and said air-conditioned restroom.

Other Thoughts:

I went out to this course on a very hot ( mid to upper 90s) and sunny day to see how it was. The scorching heat really got to us on the back 9, as we drank most of our fluids well before that point. The course doesn't really offer much shade or protection from the sun, so better hope a nice breeze is blowing through on those hot days. We went about 2 weeks after they finally started letting golfers play, and realize that a lot of the kinks are still being worked out. Even after managing to lose a disc in the brush, I still had a great time. That being said I think that this is a really nice course. If you can spend a day out here its well worth it. 4 dollars to play means 1 dollar per round with 4 different ways to play each hole if you can fit it all in. Fantastic value, great setup, will definitely be coming back again soon.
