fun times 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I had fun throwing this course. It was hilly and tree infested which is what I like. Hit your lines and you'll have a good score. Tee pads were okay, sign's was good. Easy to follow. Good use of the available land.

Cons:

There may have been two signs missing but it was easy to navigate. Relatively short holes.

Other Thoughts:

Easy to find, I drove right to it. Plenty of parking. Picnic areas, playground, other activities go on here. There is a practice basket. "Next tee" signs on the baskets and on the tee signs. Bring spray during bug season.

Solid courses with fair challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is an excellent mix of terrain, elevation, technical, and open shots. It provides a little something for everyone, and can be fun to play at any skill level. The course is fairly easy to follow, but you can get mixed up and throw a hole on the wrong course if you don't know where you're going.

Cons:

Some of the tees are pretty beat up and it can get confusing, even if you've played the course a few times, to really figure out where you're going. Once you get past that, the courses both play very steady.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to play back to back. Sometimes you can get multiple rounds in on both courses in a day. Bring bug spray and stay out of the brush, chiggers are everywhere.

Burns Blue 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It gets you much better as a player because it has a variety of shots. Has some short technical shots at the beginning, gets a little longer towards the middle, and stays long and technical for most of the remainder after 9. New baskets are definitely a plus as well. The park is typically in pretty good shape and parking is really never a problem. Benches/picnic tables at almost every hole is really nice and the signs at each hole are done pretty well too.

Cons:

I've played it enough that it doesn't bother me anymore, but there are a lot of old tee pads lying around (mostly on the first half). It makes learning the course pretty tough because it's already mixed in with Burns Red course and on top of that the old unused tee pads just get confusing. OB is always tough for sure, but going over the fence on hole 5 and 7 can be an absolute nightmare so if you aren't pretty accurate with distance than I'd suggest not throwing your favorite disc on those.

Other Thoughts:

Just an overall fun/skillful course and park. One of the great things is that you get Burns Red too so you can easily play two rounds in a day (more if you have the energy). Love this course.

Very, very good. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- NEW BASKETS. Brand new Mach X's.

- Decent concrete tee pads, good signage.

- Lot of mixture in hole design. Woods, wide open, open with trees, open with an OB creek, tournament layout had two island holes (#3 and #8). Really high quality layout.

- Even though it goes near the interstate, there are holes cut in the fence at places to allow you to retrieve your disc.

- Beautiful part of the park. Grass was perfectly cut, even though there were people playing around the course, I never saw anyone mistakenly get too close to course.

Cons:

- A few of the teeboxes can have mud right off the front of them. Speaking from experience, it's not fun throw a great drive, then bust your butt from slipping on mud.

- Could use a little more signage around #8's basket. #9 is a ways across the road, and #16's tee box is very close to #8's basket and seems like it should be the next hole.

- There several holes that have tee boxes near the previous basket. In the tournament I played in, I noticed a lot of groups get backed up because a group was on the next tee box near the their hole. Also, we had someone walking with us, almost get hit in the head by a disc from the previous hole, sure it was that group's fault for not yelling "four", but it really wasn't a bad shot, and if landing near the next tee box is a good strategy for a hole, that needs to be addressed somehow.

- During the tournament we had flags and string marking OB, but I doubt those a permanent. Would be nice to see small wood posts lining OB, to avoid confusion during casual play.

Other Thoughts:

- I haven't made up my mind if I like Red or Blue more. It's clear they are perfect compliments to each other. I'd probably have to flip a coin on which to play if I could only play one, but I would hope I would have the time to play both. I would definitely recommend playing both, but if you have to choose.......good luck.

Old baskets, great layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wonderful (varying) layout with a mix of tight wooded lines, open shots, short and long shots, and noticeable elevation changes wherever the terrain allows. Challenging OB on some holes, plenty of risk-reward opportunities for birdies.

Cons:

Ancient baskets, interstate highway noise. Lack of anything except par-3's.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course! If it had brand new baskets and a quiet setting it would be my favorite in the state.

My favorite thing about the course is the variety. Hole 1 is a tight wooded shot with multiple pin positons. Hole 2 is a shorter shot with three lines to the pin. Hole 3 is an approach shot with two lines, but the basket is protected enough to reward accuracy with a birdie and punish bad throws with a not-quite-gimme par save. Hole 4 is an absolute bomb with a creek OB to the right, woods trouble on the left, and some beautiful trees in the fairway making you pick your landing area carefully. Hole 5 has two tee pads. The one up at the top of the hill makes you throw about 400 feet or more to have a look at birdie, with OB on both sides and an OB creek crossing your path around 330' to the front, or you can play it safe, lay it in the middle short and look at a 250' upshot. Hole 6 is a tight uphill shot with mature trees and an OB fence in play. This sort of variety continues throughout the course. Pin placement changes frequently on about a third of the holes to keep things fresh.

A golfer can navigate the entire course without ever needing a shot more exotic than an occasional forehand drive. I am RHBH and I can play the whole course without a single flick, and I have played with RHFH and LHBH players that navigate the entire course without pulling anything out of their bag of tricks. That isn't to say the course isn't challenging, or doesn't provide opportunities for multiple shot types, especially if you stray from the fairway.

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

great distance shots mixed with obstacles, OB, and vegetation--I prefer longer (more difficult) courses, and this fits the bill. Ditch the Red Course, Man-Up and throw the Blue...

Cons:

way finding from 14 basket to 15 tee could be improved--as could 12 basket to 13 tee...otherwise...NONE!

Other Thoughts:

check on the OB rules with whomever you play with...the rules vary and are not well explained...

Work it, Work it, Own That Flight Path 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is a combination open and wooded holes. It has a decent variety of long and short holes as well. There is a creek running through a part of it, but it also has a road and some OB to be dealt with. The wooded holes are either alley shots or the sparse, tall trunk style, which make you really know your flight paths to navigate the longer throws. The open holes are long enough to let you air a few drives out. They have concrete tee pads and the baskets are in fair condition. They do post a few arrows on some of the trees to help direct you to the next hole. Restrooms, water, and trashcans were available in a couple places on this course. Parking was easy and you can get maps at the park's welcome center. Plus, two courses on the same property is always a welcomed sight.

Cons:

Navigation is poor. You really need a map and even then the little short posts that may or may not have the hole number on it will be needed to be checked for sure. There is no footage or map type signage here. You may have to walk ahead on each hole just a little to check and make sure you know which basket to throw at, if you don't have a guide.

Other Thoughts:

The Fun Factor was pretty good here. The trees, well-designed fairways, and the use of the road and creek kept you under control. Some of these prevented you from just throwing for distance. Like the other course on this property, I wish it had easier navigation, but it was still fun just the same. I certainly would play this course again.

Blue Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very fun course with some nice open drives along with some long tree-filled drives. Some fencing and water to keep you on your toes and lots of trees on the back 9-15 across the street.

Cons:

Very easy to chucnk your disc over the fence toward the interstate on a few of the holes. Interstate is quite loud at times. Very confusing if you are first-timer without a guide, you must print the map if you want to not get frustrated. Lots and lots of grounded leaves to dissapear into. Both of these courses can be crowded on nice days.

Other Thoughts:

A must play in the area. A great foil to the short, uber technical red course.

Cons:

They recently moved the fence on Hole 5 out farther, so it's now easier to lose your disc to the thick brush.

Blue Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Local Pro's use this course over the red, for it's degree of difficulty. There's long holes and short. Some nice birdie chances. It's a change of pace from the red course.

Cons:

Some holes can be a hassle with the volume of people using other parts of the parks i.e. basketball, pavillions, etc. Some hole can punish you if you make a mistake, mostly holes 5 and 7. If you are new and have a problem with your throws going left, you should be careful as discs are easily lost in some of the brush on the other side of fence.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a good course and can be a nice alternative when traffic on the red course is heavy!

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great mix of holes, some long, some not so long; some right to left, some left to right; and some wooded, some open. Every hole has a concrete teepad. A great course and there is another course that uses the same parking area. A few small creeks are well used to add to your thoughts about where you need to throw your disc.

I think longer throwers will appreciate this course more than anyone. If you can throw 380'-400', every hole is deucable. Sure, you will have to sink a 50+' putt on #4 though if that is your absolute max, but that is not impossible. Because of this and the shot shapes and lines that are required, this course takes your best to score well, but really low scores can be seen.

Risk vs Reward is high on this course. OB fences, creeks, and pavement can make you think twice about where you want to run at that chance for 2. Also, several of the tight wooded holes have more than one path to the basket so you have to make a choice before your throw and stick with it. Make sure you are mentally prepared.

There are water faucets behind the pavilion near hole 1 of the Red course and near the pavilion after hole 10. There are bathrooms near hole 15.

Cons:

-Lacking good tee signs. These would be needed to let people know about the OB, island holes (3 and short 8), and distance to each basket position. They could also be used to aid in navigation. Right now, they only show the best path to each basket, and one distance.

-Difficult to navigate. Remember to cross the road after holes 8 and 15. I had to have someone that knew the course well to show me where to go the first 3-4 times I played it.

-Some of the baskets are beat a bit, but most catch really well. The first basket has a place where a disc can go through it if it hits at just the right angle, I have never seen this happen during a round though.

-When wet, the older teepads (the straight rectangle ones that are small in width) are extremely slippery. The newer ones are usually fine in any condition.

-There were Christmas lights all over the 16th and 17th holes and it is early November. On 16, there are reigndeer lights right in front of the tee box and in line with the fairway. I did manage to get over them and make a good throw, but it took a bit of effort. On 17, the tee is elevated a bit and the lights are all over the fairway. I took a natural throw and didn't have a problem with the lights, but if you can't throw 250 feet with some height, you won't get past them. I aimed right over the "E" in the giant "NOEL" lights and let my disc go over it and the creek behind it and fade to the basket.

Any other time of year, there is no problem.
*Update* Winter 2010/11, the baskets were pulled on the holes where the Christmas lights came into play because of people breaking or stealing the lights and equipment. The rest of the course was also technically closed during that time.

Other Thoughts:

-This would be a 4.5 or 5 rating to me if navigation was easier, the baskets were replaced, and it wasn't all par 3. I feel that the course could be so much better with some true multi-shot holes, but with the area that it was put in, it is probably the best that it could be. It is definitely worth playing if you are anywhere near the Little Rock area.

-There is a hole in the fence to the left of the 5th tee so you can go get your disc if you throw it over, but there is plenty of room to the right of the fairway so there shouldn't be a problem with throwing over the fence. There is also a hole in the fence past the tee on the 7th hole if you throw over.

-The creeks are about 2-5 feet wide when they are full and are not deep enough to eat your plastic for good. You can retrieve your disc from just about anywhere without getting your feet wet. The creek to the right of 4 is used as OB in or across it. On 5 it is used as OB if thrown into it. The long creek on 5 is casual as is the water on 8. On 16 and 17, the creek to the right (the same creek as on 4) is OB if you are in it or across it. On 18, the creek and everything to the left is OB, you have to throw over the creek on your tee shot.

Good Stuff! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This course was truly a championship style course. Beautifully designed, long grassy shots with creeks - creek beds anyways - crossing the fairways. Wooded, dirt, tight gap shots; open, long grassy shots... and none of them "easy". Tons of OB - one hole has OB on both sides and bisected by a creek at about the distance a drive would land... nice.
- Proximity to the red course. It's always nice to be able to bag two courses in a few hours while road trippin for courses. (I was able to play 4 courses that day).
- And, the great directional signs on the freeway and throughout the park.
- Tons of memorable shots. Some of these holes were very well designed. Especially the front nine. Awesome!

Cons:

- It was Humid as $#@*. I was sweating balls at like 8:00 am.
- Lack of signage. In order for this course to receive a higher rating (I could have easily given this course a 4.5) it needs signage. These holes are long... and to know the distances would be a huge benefit to your round. Hole 3 has an island with an ob mote around it... you would never know they painted an ob line if you weren't with a local (or had played it before).

Other Thoughts:

- Saw the cops rolling through this town like crazy! They were out to get everyone. And, while playing I saw a few patrol the park.
- Saw guys out there doing work on the course... which means its improving. Now, if they could only get that signage (and make 'em good signs when you do finally get 'em guys... the course deserves it).
My Score: 0 (with a few left behind).

More challenging than the red course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course starts out with the first couple of holes in the same wooded area as the red course, but then opens up into a much more open area for a few holes. There is a creek that runs along holes 4-8 for OB but is easy to get discs back from if you needed to. Great Holes: Hole 4 is a great long hole across a field of white flowers (in the Spring when I was there at least). Hole 5 is another awesome hole that shoots down a hill with a fenceline that runs the full length of the fairway on the left and has a creek that crosses the fairway in two different places to a basket about 450 feet out. Hole 7 is a cool tight hole with the same fenceline running the left side of the fairway. Holes 9-15 is across the road into another area with a lot of trees. This section had much less defined fairways from the rest of the course and from the red course. 16-18 are much easier to finish out the round. The blue course definitely had more long holes and more variety than the red course. Concrete tee pads and located in a park with a lot to do.

Cons:

The blue course was not quite as much fun as the red course was. The blue course is also much more difficult to navigate, especially between holes 8 and 9. The basket for hole 8 actually says "17" on it and then the next tee box that you would intuitively go to is for hole 16. You have to cross the road and hunt for hole 9's tee box. Once you find that, your next challenge is to figure out where 9's basket is as it is not easy to locate in a mess of trees with no defined fairway and about 350 feet out. Most of the rest of the course is fairly easy to navigate. You may have to do a little bit of hunting when you are back in the area where holes 9-15 are. For some reason hole 12 did not have a concrete tee pad when I was there. It was the only one out of 36 holes at Burns Park. The baskets were old and beat up but double-layered chains caught okay. The red course has alternate tee pads to choose from, the blue course did not have them as far as I could tell. Not as much elevation change as the red course...for the most part pretty flat.

Other Thoughts:

I thik that the blue course is the more challenging of the two courses at this park. The blue requires both accuracy and power, with several holes through trees in the 350 to 450 foot range.

Burns 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Two full 18 hole courses both well marked, fun, and providing a balanced challenge. The red course stays in the woods for almost every hole with some tunnels being very tight and others being more open. Elevation changes can be a factor. The distance of the red course is moderately low, but you need to be on your game to score well. The blue course also has some tight tunnel shots in the woods, but the majority of this course is longer and more open. There is less elevation change and trees but that is made up for with the longer distances.

Cons:

Some holes not as well marked as you would like. Some gaps are almost non existent, you just throw and pray. Most times that I have played I have seen trach lying around.

Other Thoughts:

The courses have been around for a long time and it has the feel of a nice worn in DG course. One of the finest courses in a large area and well worth a full day.
