Along the River and Back 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 17, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A competent 9er working in trees, water, and some distance.

-Amenities: Good turf tees, Prodigy baskets including practice, benches. No tee signs when I played.

-Features: For a city-park style 9er, Calhoun has some remarkable features to work with. The first seven holes all include a river, and the presence of very large trees creates quite enough shaping opportunities.

-Flow: Simple to follow. The first seven play along the river, then the last three cross over the road and play back to the start. (7)-(8) is mildly confusing, but otherwise flawless.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: An enjoyable use of its natural resources. Holes are mostly in the 300' range with a couple shorter and a couple longer. Trees are present on all but one hole, and the shaping is varied. The threat of kicking into the river adds a lot of fun to otherwise simple holes. The last three holes add length and subtract trees to give more of an opportunity to drive. All in all, it's short-ish, fun, and varied.

Cons:

-Road/Walking Path: Biggest issue to me. A busy park road/walking trail runs along almost every hole, and is frequently within striking distance. It seems that this place is busy with people strolling and jogging, so this can be a serious issue and/or delay on the course. If there was one thing to bring this course's rating down, it's this.

-River: There's definitely the possibility of dunking a disc, and I think the river is treacherous enough that retrieval is ill-advised. This is especially pronounced on the opening (1), which is possibly the scariest way to start an otherwise harmless course.

-Low-Hanging Branches: To me, the low branches on (2) and (10) aren't very much fun, and block most ace lines to the baskets.

-No Tee Signs: Obviously, you want to see these go up at some point, even if they're basic.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed playing here. The river, old trees, and trimmed grass made for a great setting, upon which the designers placed a solidly shaped rec-level course. It isn't spectacular, but it's toward the high end of my 9ers. Worth a stop on I-75 in my opinion.

I must confess that I don't know what the course could be if it used other land in the park. I definitely trust Moose's judgement. Perhaps a second course is in order? However, for the land they did choose, I think this is well-used.

A Work In Progress ? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Calhoun Rec Center is a multi use park with ball fields and even a pool .This park also supports the 10 hole Calhoun disc golf course . There is some parking near the first tee and 10th basket . There is a decent bathroom in the shelter house close to the lot . The first tee is hard to spot , but it is on the left side of the foot bridge that you will never cross .
THE EQUIPMENT -- The tee pads are a nice Astro Turf with a wood base surrounding it . They are level and look new , probably 5' X 9' in size . There were no signs at the tee boxes , just the hole number on a piece of wood on the back left on the tee pad . The baskets are a brand new green banded Prodigy . There are small but new and sturdy benches at the tee pads .
THE LANDSCAPE -- The grass was mowed when I was here . It looks like the park is well cared for . This course is very flat . The first 7 holes travel along fairways that keep a pretty deep creek line on your right . Newbies and casuals need to try to keep the creek out of play , as a ricochet could cause you to lose your approach/driver . The last 3 holes play on the other side of the park road , working your way back to the lot . The course plays park style , with a few tree obstacles and a couple of well placed baskets . Even without trash cans everywhere , this park was clean and almost overgrowth-free.
THE HIGHLIGHTS -- #6 was a nice hole , a medium length one with a few trees in play . Nice basket placement . NOTE : if you overshoot the basket by just a little , you will lose your disc in the creek .
#8 was the longest hole on the course , and the only dogleg . With a ball field on the right side , but mostly out of play , the fairway bends to the right , going up just a slight 2' ridge , to a basket sits behind a large tree . I estimate the hole to be maybe 550' ?
SIGNATURE HOLE -- I liked #2 . It has a large overhanging tree between the tee pad and the basket . If you choose to drive left to right , you have to travel over the park road and hope to avoid the branches of a tree line . Throwing from right to left , you have to bend a driver over the width of the creek to avoid the branches of the tree , in order to land safely in the fairway .
DISC RISK -- Low . If you don't take chances , like on 2 , or overshoot the #6 basket , you will leave with the same number of discs that you came with . The park has very little overgrowth to it .
THE TIME -- It took me a little less than 40 minutes to play the course solo . A foursome will finish in less than an hour and ten minutes .
There was no other disc golfers here on a Sunday morning at 9:30 - 10:15 , so you might have this course to yourself during rounds .

Cons:

SAFETY -- This looked to be a popular place for walkers using the road that stays on your left . I had to hold up a couple of times to let them pass . Add the fact that #8 , the longest hole , plays somewhat close to a ball filed , where bored younger brothers and sisters may walk the outside areas during a game or practice , and picnic areas around the beginning and end of the course ( #1 , #10 ) , and you could have issues .
SAME 'OL - SAME 'OL -- Almost all of the holes are straight ahead . Other than having to bend your drive on #2 and the dogleg on 8 , everything else is a drawn line from tee to basket . The prior reviewer , Moose33 , mentioned unused land across the bridge . There looks to be some space to either make existing holes longer and more challenging , or adding up to 7 more holes to make it a full 18 . Just a thought ,,,
NAVIGATION -- No kiosk , no online map , and nothing to show the distances to the baskets . Even though you aren't going to spend large amounts of time looking for pads, knowing where you are going , and what the distances of the course holes are , might mean the difference whether players stop and try a course , or bypass it .
LACK OF EQUIPMENT -- The course is brand new , and I hate reviewing them when they are less than a year old ( 2021 ) , because additions might occur even while I am reviewing . The course needs a kiosk with a map , and signs at the holes . Longer 2nd tee pads would really add to it , or adding more holes , but that may come at a later date .
Only 10 holes : ( . And almost no elevation .

Other Thoughts:

I appreciate that the city has promoted disc golf in an area that needed a course bad . Calhoun sits 20 minutes away from any other courses and is one of few north of Atlanta that is just off of I-75 . I only stopped at this course because I was breaking up a return from Florida to home and stayed just a couple of miles from the exit . I would like to visit here a couple of years from now to see the progress .
MY RECOMMENDATION -- I don't like creeks that you can't fish your disc out for first timers , families , or newbies , but this creek can be avoided if careful and throwing wide of the creek , A good course for the locals to socialize and hang out and chill at the shelter after a couple of rounds . Not challenging enough for intermediates on up , but a good place for them to practice , or try out new discs . A good leg stretching course for the traveler , as it's close to the expressway and flat ( easy on tight legs ) and short . The course collector will also like the fact that you will only take up an hour of time driving to/from , and playing the course .
Normally, I might tell you to skip this course unless local , but since it's new and you may see something much better in the year or even months to come , Give The Course Some Support !!

It’s a start, but doesn’t feel finished. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This one may take on some personal notes, as I used this park for field work for over 8 years on my lunch breaks from work. Begged them to put in a course since 2015, offered many times to help them design in, and they finally put in a course.

I'll get into the actual review now though.

The course plays along the perimeter of a busy multi use park, possibly the busiest in Gordon county. You have a rec center, tennis courts, swimming pool, walking paths, baseball, football and soccer fields.

The first tee is at the back of the park near the picnic pavilion and the metal bridge that crosses the creek to the other part of the park.

You play along the creek, with the surprisingly deep creek adding challenge on holes 1 and 3-7. The road also is in play and I would guess is OB as well.

It's light to moderately wooded and is filled with beautiful old growth hardwoods. They feature especially heavily on holes 2,6,7 and 10.

Tee boxes are turf on a wooden frame, and are quite serviceable. There are also metal and wooden benches that sturdy and seat two easily.

Baskets are green banded prodigy baskets that get the job done well.

Most holes seem to be between 200-330, but I think 8 is around 500 and probably a par 4.
It makes a neat loop back to near the first hole and you can be on your way, or play though again as it's only 10 holes.

Cons:

The main beef I have with the course is, they built it on the wrong side of the creek.

On the other side they have some large tracks of land that are not as wooded, but could also use the creek and some of the newer growth trees while coming into contact with far fewer pedestrians and vehicles.

The park is really busy and a novice player could easily hit a legally parked car on half of the holes which is not great for safety.

There are also picnic tables that are on fairways on holes 1, 4 and 10 which is also a potential safety hazard.

No idea of the pars or hole length because there are no signs.

The pads themselves are fine, but have odd little wooden triangles holding the turn down on the pad corners. These will likely trip some people up/get cracked by use.

Super flat, other than the trees and creek the challenges are a bit single note.

Baskets are green banded and sometimes hard to see.

The safety and the fact that they have not used the land on the other side of the creek. Maybe if they build out a full 18 the additional 18 will be there.

Other Thoughts:

It's got some merit, holes 6 and 8 in particular are fun and beautiful holes that are well done, but feels unfinished.

I had a vision of what this course could/should be beforehand and unfortunately it didn't live up to that.

I like some things about it and with signs and some safety concerns addressed it could possibly be a 2.5.
