Pros:
A competent 9er working in trees, water, and some distance.
-Amenities: Good turf tees, Prodigy baskets including practice, benches. No tee signs when I played.
-Features: For a city-park style 9er, Calhoun has some remarkable features to work with. The first seven holes all include a river, and the presence of very large trees creates quite enough shaping opportunities.
-Flow: Simple to follow. The first seven play along the river, then the last three cross over the road and play back to the start. (7)-(8) is mildly confusing, but otherwise flawless.
-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: An enjoyable use of its natural resources. Holes are mostly in the 300' range with a couple shorter and a couple longer. Trees are present on all but one hole, and the shaping is varied. The threat of kicking into the river adds a lot of fun to otherwise simple holes. The last three holes add length and subtract trees to give more of an opportunity to drive. All in all, it's short-ish, fun, and varied.
Cons:
-Road/Walking Path: Biggest issue to me. A busy park road/walking trail runs along almost every hole, and is frequently within striking distance. It seems that this place is busy with people strolling and jogging, so this can be a serious issue and/or delay on the course. If there was one thing to bring this course's rating down, it's this.
-River: There's definitely the possibility of dunking a disc, and I think the river is treacherous enough that retrieval is ill-advised. This is especially pronounced on the opening (1), which is possibly the scariest way to start an otherwise harmless course.
-Low-Hanging Branches: To me, the low branches on (2) and (10) aren't very much fun, and block most ace lines to the baskets.
-No Tee Signs: Obviously, you want to see these go up at some point, even if they're basic.
Other Thoughts:
I really enjoyed playing here. The river, old trees, and trimmed grass made for a great setting, upon which the designers placed a solidly shaped rec-level course. It isn't spectacular, but it's toward the high end of my 9ers. Worth a stop on I-75 in my opinion.
I must confess that I don't know what the course could be if it used other land in the park. I definitely trust Moose's judgement. Perhaps a second course is in order? However, for the land they did choose, I think this is well-used.
