Enjoyable Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee pads in good condition with good markers.
Arrows at the bottom of the cage pointing to the next tee.
Well maintained.
Benches on every hole, and trashcans on multiple holes.
Nice and shaded, a lot of mature trees that provided good shade, but not too many trees where you have to play pinball to the basket.

Cons:

Not too challenging.
Fairways are not crossing, but they run pretty close parallel to each other.
No elevation change.
Signage has par, feet to the basket, but there is an actual picture of the basket zoomed up, it is not a diagram of the whole hole.
Kinda the same flat shot on every hole (throw about 200-300ft either to the left or to the right of the trees and have it hyzer/anhyzer back)

Other Thoughts:

It was a nice park and the parking was good. There was a bathroom across the street.

Great beginner / intermediate course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This was my home course in college; I've played 58 rounds.
- Front 9 holes are a bit short (with 2-3 exceptions), but playing from the blue tees will still bring a challenge
- Love the back 9, blue tees are challenging...although the course is very flat overall
- Impossible to lose a disc! I lost 1 ever there. The course has no brush except for the edges which are wooded.
- Layout -- very good use of space and the course provides the illusion that you're in a much bigger park / wooded area than you are

Cons:

- Some holes are too short even from the blues (1,10,15). The blues on these holes are equal or less than 10 feet behind the white tees. But they're the shortest holes on the course, and variety is the spice of life :)
- A pro would be disappointed with the # of holes that allow straight lines for drives. I play recreationally so I'm OK with this

Other Thoughts:

This course has a special place in my heart; great place to relax and play a casually challenging round!

Great for bringing along first timers! I've had a few friends fall in love with dg on this course. It's forgiving to mistakes.

Imo 11 and 14 are the toughest holes on the course (blue tees). 11 is long (450ft or so) and has a dog leg to the left. Could never manage a birdie on this one. 14 tee allows a straight drive but has a tough mando requiring a bend to the right 20-30ft before the hole.

good course for a beginner 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 23, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

After 10 rounds, I've upped my initial rating of 2.5. I do like this course and have continued to regularly play it.

Very pretty park setting. Flat. Big trees to deal with but not discouraging. Even though many baskets are tucked behind trees.

No underbrush in the fairways. There is such along the edges, and there is a creek to remember.

There is a subtle variety among the holes, and the confidence-building no. 18 is enough to bring one back: one can make a full-throw drive straight down the pike. So far, I have managed to par it 3 times and strike birdie 3 times.

Cons:

Holes do overlap one another, so if busy (sort of was the first time I played), we can be upon one another. However, you can virtually see every hole from every other hole. So shift and parry to avoid congestion.

The ground is muddy after rain and icy after a freeze. Despite the trench cut from no. 1's tee pads to the creek on the east side near the 17 basket, drainage is a real issue. Wear hiking boots or the like. There are little footbridges hither and yon. If it is wet and muddy, use them even it means walking more.

Now that I know the format well, navigation to the correct, next hole is no longer an issue. However, for someone new to the course, I still think a course map would be helpful (on the kiosk).

There is distance information on the signs but no par information. In the past, I used the par information here on DGCR. Later created my own par per hole based on PDGA's formula. And as of 2021, there is a course map on DGCR with actual par information now.

Other Thoughts:

I think my change of heart about the course has to do with playing it in spring and summer. Very pleasant place to be when it is dry and sunny.

The course is very conveniently located for DC and MD residents. And a nice stop on the way somewhere else for VA residents. My GPS took me to the wrong location in December 2018, but I ultimately found it. In January 2019, I also figured out that the left turn at Campus Drive (then turn right on Riverside) is a safer left turn than off Kenilworth (left onto Old Calvert). This is from traveling north on Kenilworth.

In December 2018, I brought along my rather non-athletic sisters. One actually played 5 of the holes with me. The other enjoyed the walk and took pictures. Something for everyone.

I was at the nearby College Park Aviation Museum in October 2021, which is worth the $5 admission for their small but wonderful displays. The museum shop has *new* Innova discs for sale. Not sure if they also have used discs as well, but the new stuff is on a rack on one of the walls. As I didn't need anything, I didn't buy anything. But FYI if you find that you do.

The must play in DC 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, large multiple tee pads on every hole. All have 2 and most holes have 3.
Good baskets, all are labeled.
Large, old-growth trees throughout the course provide plenty of obstacles but without the undergrowth that hides your discs. Mandos are also used to create challenge and for safety.
Not much chance of losing a disc here, maybe on the backside and right of #18.
Several par 4s and a couple of par 5s on this rather small property.
Both nines start and end at the parking lot, so you could start on either, if crowded.
The locals seemed very friendly and active in course upkeep.

Cons:

If this course is crowded, I could see it being an issue. Relatively small piece of property with several parallel fairways.
Didn't see any water or drinks at the start, restrooms appeared to be nearby.

Other Thoughts:

No real signature hole on the course, but they found a way to lay out a couple of long holes, #7 and especially #18 are fun to play.
This was my first course in MD and the oldest course in the state. I've had it on my wishlist for a couple of years, since a previous trip to DC when I didn't get to play it.
Very nice to play a course this old that is kept in good shape and still plenty of challenge. You can tell the local Parks dept and/or locals keep the course up.
The locals were taking a break the day I was there, so I played with a guy from the Czech Republic. He was in town visiting relatives and always plays Calvert on his visits there. Kind of fitting that I run into a European player while playing in DC! He was interesting to talk to, hearing about the Euro courses, tournaments he's attended and FINALLY finding out to pronounce - "Kono-piss-tea"!
I had this course in mind when planning the family vacation this year, this was #97 on my final four countdown to 100 courses played!

I'll be back 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The baskets are all in great shape on this course, as are the signs and directional aids. You can tell the designers tried to make the most of the space alloted to them.

Cons:

As others have mentioned, the course is basically flat and the holes are pretty short. It's not going to blow anyone's mind and isn't super challenging, but the shots still need to be thrown and puts need to be made.

Other Thoughts:

I recently moved to the area and this is the closest course to where I live. Despite the issues this is a fun little course that I will be happy to play as often as I can. A "meh" disc golf course is better than lots of other ways to spend your time!

Historic Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

User friendly pars. Compact layout.

Cons:

Poor drainage. High density of casual park users.

Other Thoughts:

There are a bewildering number of mandos and only locals seem to know which are "active". Some are only a few feet off the tee pad and all can be safely ignored as their primary purpose was to create variety. Multiple tee pads create more diversity than would be expected as the park's many shade trees are used well for creating interesting lines. The dense course layout makes it easy to play multiple rounds in one visit. The folf course is the dominant feature in a small park seemingly created just for the course yet there were a bewildering number of picnicers and other naturists littering the fairways despite clear signage at the perimeter that this was a frisbee park and the course being heavily played. Multiple times I felt obliged to walk ahead and warn groups they might get buzzed by my tee shot but after all they were lounging on a golf course. Though unmarked there are areas which seem to be permanent water hazards given how long they remain submerged after precipitation.

The historic signage is wonderful as is "earning" an eagle which would be a par or birdie elsewhere. Though the course is on the flight path for a small nearby airport and it seems an overhead thrown in anger might be able to bag a Cessna the occasional plane overflight seems more a quirky feature than a distraction.

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Really a fun course, short but fun.
The course is maintained really well.
There are multiple tee and pin placements that get changed pretty frequently. The better majority of the course is fairly technical, because of the lay out of the trees.

Cons:

Completely level, so if elevation change is your game you won't like it. Depending on time it can be a bit full of people.

Helicopter buzzing the course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really enjoyed the combo of the open layout and the mandos. This strategy makes the course more mental than physically demanding. the fairways are exciting due to the trees that seem strategically placed right where right hand dominant heizer throwers would tend to huck. so...it's a well rounded challenging course.

Cons:

crazy helicopter pilot buzzing the course (looked like the president's helicopter). no elevation change. fetid stream where you definitely don't want your discs to go.

Other Thoughts:

seriously cool crowd, took my dog and received no hassling. overall a really nice course with many fun and challenging holes. I would say that if you are an experienced thrower, you should maybe play the course all par three with a couple par fours.

Needs some TLC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is easy to get to and a lot of fun to play. The mandos help to make for some challenging drives and having three nice tees for each hole keeps the course from getting repetitive on return trips.

Cons:

The course is flat and there's not a whole lot of risk anywhere on the course. If you lose a disc here, you're doing something wrong.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't call this a con *yet*-- but the trees here have taken a real beating over the last two years or so. Big snowstorms and thunderstorms have killed lots of them, and many of the larger trees are hollow. It's only a matter of time until these become victims of a large storm. Decades of being rammed with discs has damaged the bark on many trees, leaving them more susceptible to fungal infections. Park crews have been good about removing the dead and dangerous trees, but unfortunately, this affects the course. A few mandos are gone now because of damage the trees have sustained. Lots more trees are marked to be cut down soon. Look for trees with orange marks at their base--there are lots of them.

New trees need to be planted and protected, but this will certainly be hard to do on an active disc golf course. In a decade, this is going to be a field, not a wooded course, unless new trees are planted.

High Flyin Fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Fun & Challenge for all skill levels. Excellent for introducing folks to the game.
*Park / Course clean and well maintained. Good Club Support.
*Multiple tees (Red, White & Blue) Nice good size concrete pads.
*Multiple Pin positions. Mach III Baskets in very good shape & catch well.
*Signage is pretty good. Flow is easy to follow. Benches on many holes.
*Great use of property. Every ounce of DG has been squeezed from the space.
*Flat, moderately wooded terrain works great to practice a variety of shots.
*Design favors the player. Mistakes are not often punished too badly.
*Discs available for purchase up the street at the aviation museum.
*Good Parking / Restroom (Portajohn)
*Fairly easy to get to from DC Beltway / Metro close by. (Green Line)
*Not far from College Park with other trendy amenities.

Cons:

*During wet times, course may become soggy & buggy.
*Design is tight. Players need to beware of other players.
*More advanced/pro players may not find this course a challenge. (Still Fun)

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing at this course for over 20 years and it is a little gem inside the Beltway. It is a classic old course which has evolved from the days when the hot plastic was the Aero & the 86. A day at Calvert is always a good time! One of the quirky things about the space is the canopy. Though the trees are old and majestic; their tops are cropped due to the property being at the end of the airport. It is often a pleasant distraction to watch the single engine planes come & go.
As you look at the property, you might think that you will be having dejà vu on every other hole. Surprisingly this is not the case. The use of the terrain and trees keeps things from getting monotonous. There are opportunities to use a variety of shots with a good mix of left, right and straight pin placements. Of course the trees come into play but you won't be staring down many tight fairways. Often the white tees give an altered look at the pin rather than add distance over the red tees and a few blue tees are shared by white tees. Those that are not shared, with the addition of C pin placements, will even keep the big arms entertained. There may be some confusion finding blue tees just because there are so many tees in view. With a little attention this should not be a problem. The course plays pretty quickly so you could easily play all three tees in a long afternoon.
I haven't had to deal with too much sogginess over the years but the buggy, natty, flying things can be an issue when the course is damp. Coming from NoVA, I usually play the course between rush hours so I have not encountered the course really busy. I bet after work and on weekends the course could really see some traffic. I still don't think it would be a big issue. This course has stood steadfast through the decades and a good destination when visiting DC. Add it on your list of "must see" DC monuments.

Soggy but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 3, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'll say it up front. I am a newbie. Keep that in mind.

Layout was easy to follow (signs were clear I thought). The park is pleasant to walk around. Holes were open enough not to punish mistakes (except for my one big one, mentioned in "other thoughts).

Cons:

I went the day after a rainstorm. It was a total swamp. That made it more interesting, but messy. There was nobody there (it's Dec) but I can see how if it's populated, you'd be ducking a lot.

Other Thoughts:

I lost a disc into the creek on the far side of 17. I'm not terribly good and didn't pull the dog-leg right. Sailed straight out from the tee. I spent a good 45 minutes looking and never found it. If anyone comes across a white Valkyrie, please let me know. It's got my phone number and email address on the inner rim.

Good quickie! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 31, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to follow course layout and nice concrete tees. Very hard to lose disc. Great for quick round or 2. Very good for a chuck and run(speed golf) as the whole course is flat and can be done in 20 min, but watch out for divots! Good for practicing low line drive shots and accuracy. I love this course on hot summer days cause its almost all shaded! Can play in shorts and sandals.

Cons:

Short, simple, not very challenging, can be crowded. Trees are the only obstacle and no hills whatsoever. Some signs are not accurate and can be difficult to figure out which basket to shoot at. Hole 1 holds some water after storms(like a water hazard). Bitting flies especially on hole 10 for some reason loves my bald head. Mosquitoes are nasty during summer. Bring repellent!

Other Thoughts:

I wish I had known about this course earlier as it is great for beginners, although I still love this course after 100+ times! I kill my friends on this course with my sidearm. It is cool that you can see the whole course and when it is crowded I often just jump around to other holes and come back. I played this course in a hurricane like downpour as the rain was sideways and it was still fun. I've never had an issue with mud here really.

Great course for families 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 25, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Low frustration level (once you figure out where to go), little brush to get stuck in, nearly no chance of disc loss, It is a very nice course for the whole family to play, or a good introductory course to get your friends interested in Disc Golf.
There are 3 tees for various skill levels.

Cons:

The course is short and open making it relatively simple for advanced players. with one good throw you can land next to the basket on the par 5 holes. There are no major hazards and no elevation. Some mandos, but they are not overly challenging.
Some signs are old, so pay attention to the arrows on the trees for mandos. The tee sign for 15 has recently been torn off the pole. The course is begining to show it's age.

Other Thoughts:

Disc for sale just down the road.
lots of family traffic on the weekend
NO TICKS
I took a dozen 6th grade first timers and no one lost a disc, and they really liked the course. It has now turned into a yearly trip. The second year the kids got frustrated with navigation of the course and some gave up because the could not find the next tee.

Pros:

Nice looking course and well maintained. Plays through the trees but is still pretty open. Good for all skill levels. The alternate tee boxes are well placed and add some good distance to the holes.

Cons:

Very small space to fit 18 holes into. Keep an eye out for discs when the course gets crowded. Can be difficult to figure out which basket you are shooting to because the holes are cramped. The diagrams for the holes are not always helpful. Not very challenging as you get better with the sport.

Other Thoughts:

My first time playing disc golf was on this course and I was still able to have fun and feel I was doing good. This course is great for beginners and poses a few challenges to the more advanced players.
