Course Needs Some Love 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Camp Cullom is a youth camp set about 10 minutes from I-65 . Bathrooms are next to hole #1 , along with a hose to fill you water bottle . There is a small parking lot here . I don't know if you are allowed to park in the grass or not . Call or email them for hours they are open . This is a 24 hole disc golf course .
The Equipment - There is a practice basket to the side of the first tee . There is also a kiosk with map near the parking lot . There are 2 tees for almost every hole . Both tee pads are wood based and filled with gravel . The signage is pretty good here and present at both holes . The baskets are yellow Spiderweb3s and have deep buckets . Little wooden Next Tee signs are hanging from the bottom of the baskets and help with navigation .
The Landscape . #1's hole is in the open , then the holes become progressively more woods oriented Plenty of trees dot this course . Most holes have lines to the basket, some of those trees create a canopy or have random branches sticking out to alter your disc . . The rough isn't as punishing here , until you get to the final few holes . Throwing your drive off course on holes 22-24 will cost you a disc . The elevation here goes from level , to some good gully shots , to some extreme downhill or uphill drives . Overgrowth was starting to creep into the fairways on the back end of the course ( more in cons )
The Highlights Some fun holes here . #5 is a fun tight gully shot through some smaller trees . #9 is a flat drive that's fairway thins into a tunnel . #10 is a doorway uphill midrange shot to the basket sitting on the edge . #18 is a short downhill drive with a small creek on the left and the ridge on the right . #19 is a putter drive over a large gully . This will be especially hard because the lanes have grown over .
Signature Hole - #6 ( 430' , 548' ) . It's a brutally steep downhill drive to a flat level green . There is overgrowth on both sides of the fairway and a giant Christmas tree on steroids at the bottom left . The basket sits on a level open green .
Amenities - Aside from the putting basket and the kiosk , water fill up with a garden hose behind the #1 am tee . , and some bridges and nice steps scattered on the course . Also there are some metal benches and trash barrels on parts of the course .
Time - It took me about an hour and 45 minutes to play all 24 holes . A foursome will take at least 3 hours .
The course can be fun at times and does pack some variety . You better enjoy technical course , or you will have a bad day at Cullom .
Make sure you sign in and out at the middle of the driveway . They asked , I am only relaying the message .

Cons:

#1 Navigation . Print the map . Even with it , I was turned around a couple of times . Look for help from some old wooden fading signs that are in spots . Also , the wooden Next Tee signs on the most baskets help . You double back in a couple of spots , even at the end . There is a walk from 5-6 which is behind one of the houses , the pro tee being hard to find .
#2 Tee pads . The problem with gravel tee pads are that there is some upkeep to them . These pads are either worn out or have lost most of it's gravel . That means that if it rains hard in the woods , these tee pads can fill up with water .
#3 Speaking of rain , this course will be a mess to play in/ after a good rain , and a fall waiting to happen trying to descend the hill on 6.
#4 The Rough -. Keep your disc low and have a spotter on the holes with noticeable rough . #''s 22-24 are the worst . If you fling a drive high and into the overgrowth here , you might never see your disc again .
Spray on some Deet before playing . The bugs were worse here than anywhere that I played this weekend .
I won't list safety as a con , because if you survive the first 4 holes without hitting a moving car or wandering child , you will slowly move away from population . I don't think this course receives a lot of traffic any more .
Disc Risk - Medium . You won't lose any discs to water , but you will have some chances with a few blind shot ricochets off of the many trees , and the rough ( see above )
Course cleanup . The fairways in the back of this course are overgrown with weeds , there are twigs and small branches laying near the tee pads and extending to the greens . There is a huge tree/branch down and blocking the stairs going up to #19's green .

Other Thoughts:

This course had a surprising amount of elevation to it some completely flat holes with some up and downhill shots make for a fun technical 24 holes . The people running Camp Cullom were very nice and had no trouble with me playing their course ( Thanks ) . The scouts designed this course . I am stunned . There are some course designers that could never accomplish what they did . You should deserve 5 badges for the work done on this ! The times that they are open vary . Best to call ahead , or email to make sure . It was 9 am to 8 pm when I was here .
My Recommendation : Fun for the campers here to be introduced to the game , or get some exercise . The short tees make for a good course for newbies 1 discers or locals . Intermediates would be able to work on their game , but I doubt that Ams or pros would get a lot out of it besides technical midrange practice . A little long for the traveler unless he is staying nearby , like Lafayette or Frankfort . Even though this course takes time , it is a good pickup for being only 10 minutes from I-65 if you are a Course Collector . I'm going to give you all a Cautious " PLAY IT " !

Good but needs improvement 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really enjoy playing courses off the beaten path and this course certainly had that going for it. Two sets of tees is also a huge plus as is having 24 holes. The course was mostly wooded but had a few open holes that allowed you to air the disc out. The baskets were truly phenomenal and really caught the disc well. The scenery was also beautiful as the course was situated in a very nice area when it comes to nature. Some of my favorite holes include holes 10 and 12. Hole 12 in particular had an awesome green that really punished shots that went long. Hole 19 was a stunning hole over a ravine to a very narrow green. Going long on this hole is jail. Hole 22 was a nice break from the woods and offered the chance to air out the disc. All in all this was a good course (that's what a 3 rating constitutes) that was mostly enjoyable to play.

Cons:

Every course needs improvement and this course was no different. Unfortunately the tee pads were borderline unplayable on the day that I played. I will say that I was there on a wet day but even taking that aside the tee pads were simply not good. Not only are they worn but they are uneven and sometimes you are throwing uphill on the teepad. Concrete would be a huge addition to this course. Navigation wasn't bad but the navigation between hole 6 and 7 is just bad. To walk back through the fairway of hole 6 to get to hole 7 is confusing and was a mistake. The other main con with this course are the long tees. Long tees are supposed to be tough but some of the long tees had lines that were simply unfair. In particular, holes 8, 9, 10, 11 had long tees that you just wanted to scratch your head. Challenging is a good thing but luck is not. These holes simply did not have enough of a defined fairway to be a fair hole. Also, the grass was VERY high the day I played the course and the rough was brutal. Getting off of the fairway was not pleasant. Also, the two holes that essentially used the road as the fairway did not work for me. The tee signs could have been placed better as they always are facing to where you'd have to walk behind the tee to see the distances on the holes and the layout. This is not a big deal but just a minor issue. Also, hole 24 did not fit with the rest of the course. It wasn't a super long hole but there was no fairway. The option was to throw high over a line of trees to the basket. It just seemed out of place. Finally, in general it seemed that the long tees were designed as an after thought. There were many holes that simply required you to back track 150 feet just to throw the long tee.

Other Thoughts:

This course has great potential to be even better. I rate courses based on defined characteristics. So while this course may be private and should get slack because its an Eagle Scout course, I want to make sure everyone knows what they are getting themselves into. The course has some design issues that a few tweaks could definitely fix. I would also add that the Short Tees seemed much more fun and fair. It was still a fun course that had some enjoyable holes but it is a challenging course. Its not beginner friendly but I want to give a huge thanks to the Scouts for building this course. It is appreciated!
