Ball golf feel 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Capital City in Lakeview Park makes tremendous use of rolling elevation, wide open spaces and a bunker (played as OB) on hole 6, so much that this appears to have once been a short nine hole ball golf layout. Reasonable concrete tees point to pretty blue Prodigy baskets, and the fairways and paths between holes have a lower mower cut than the bordering 'rough' (another clue). The map included here on DGCR is well done and easy to follow. If you park in the intended lot*, there is decent access to a front and back nine, but there is more parking beside the 18th tee, enabling you to easily start there (or on 11 or 15).

Hole distances tend to favor the longer thrower, but there are about six holes where 300' of effective distance makes the holes deucable. While the majority of holes are really wide open, a technical gap release is needed on 3 and 6, a controlled upshot is needed on 2, 7, 12 & 15, and a laser rip might get lucky on the only 'tight' hole (5). I'm sure there are lots of places where the intent is to define OB and force some technical control, such as on the longer, but fenced hole 10 (a 30' wide corridor runs between a guardrail and a chain link fence through the middle half of the hole), and on the uphill hole 4, guarded on the left by a split rail fence, and the obstacles include nine telephone pole tie down cables (I mean, they tied those babies down like they were trying to escape!)

Overall, the course will challenge Intermediate to Advanced players, and simply frustrate lower level skills. It is a contrast /complement to the shorter, more technical East Frankfort course nearby.

Cons:

Even though this course has been in place for a few years now, the temporary plackard tee signs are faded or missing. The 4x9 tees seem small for the distances needed. The two holes across the entry drive (15, but especially 14) play too close to the golf ball driving range. The flow to those holes is awkward, as is needing to go left across the path to hole 3, rather than forward to the tee you see nearby the 2nd basket (that's hole 5 going to the right), and the need to walk all the way back up beside hole 9 to get to the 10th tee.

Obviously, signage needs completing, and next tee signage would help first timers. Hole layout maps would help in many spots: having to walk all the way up the hill on 2 to determine that the basket is tucked in to the right of that row of four pines, then down the rough and steep slope on 3 to locate the basket left around the rough, is a little too much. You can't see the basket on the one wooded hole (5), but then, throw straight and look to spot it if you get through the first half of the grove clean.

Other Thoughts:

I did not expect to find much to suit my game here, with the 'big D' incorporated so much into the plan, but was pleasantly surprised to find there were at least some holes I could deuce! On the other hand, the longer distances were such that I'd be frustrated taking many fours, so…

***When I played mid July, there was a carnival being set up that occupied the entire parking lot, and I later heard I'd gotten lucky: they pulled some baskets for the fair a day or so later.

Big Arm Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lakeview is a Multi use park in Frankfort , opening a disc golf course recently in 2018 . There is a large parking near hole #1 and Port O Lets sit in that lot .
The Equipment - The tee pads are cement and a large 4 1/2 X 9' . There are no tee signs and no kiosk . Make sure you bring an online map if you don't have UDisc . The baskets are nice blue ringed Prodigies . If you can find hole #1 and decide which direction to throw , then the mowed fairways will help guide you .
The Landscape - The park looks well cared for . There are 2 lengths of grass in most spots . Shorter grass defines the fairways and also create paths to help navigate you . The longer grass is supposed to shower a lighter rough . The trees are all trimmed and the course and park were very clean when I played . It almost plays like a real golf course . Use of the land in the park must not have been an issue . A lot of it was used for this course . There are some trees scattered around , but the trees and bushes are sparse at the fairways or greens . They are mostly predominant on holes 3-6 . . There is some elevation , but most of it is just rolling . The park is wide open , so I am guessing wind will be a factor .
Course Appearance/ Atmosphere - This course almost gives the appearance of a par 3 ball golf course . There is even a golf ball driving range near one of the holes . overall appearance is great , and is the kind of park where you would watch a sunrise or sunset .from . The atmosphere is light , here . the were several groups out on the course , but non looked very competitive . It's a grip and rip course with little technical aspect to it . Pros and Ams will only come here to test out new plastic or keep their arm in shape .
Highlights - #2 ( 498' ) Is a long slow uphill sloping drive with a row of some trees on the left that shouldn't come into play . #4 , 375' that plays longer , starts off level and open , then rises up a steep hill at the end with the basket perched on top . #6 is a large doorway drive ( 280' ) that moves up a slope to the green . There is OB marked in front of the green . #12 ( 580' ) has a long open fairway , with a couple of obstacles to avoid on the right . It eventually turns left , and the basket sits on an uphill slope
Disc Risk - very low . There are a couple of spots with high grass , and with the tee on a hill on #3 , you could pull your drive to the left into some tall grass or you could stick your driver into one of the few trees on the course , but losing a disc here would take some effort.
The Time - It took me about an hour and 10 minutes to play the course . At 7000' , the course will take some time . A foursome will complete it in about 2 hours and 15 minutes .
Because of the care of the course and all of the grass , the course is easy on the legs , only taxing you at holes 3 & 4 .
The course compliments shorter , more technical East Frankfort Park just a couple of miles away .

Cons:

Safety - The course is spaced well , and lack of blind shots make the course safe from other disc golfers . BUT , the course plays close to the road on a couple of holes , and on #14 , the left side of the fairway runs dangerously close to the driving range . Getting smacked in the face or body by a shanked drive by some duffer will ruin your day . I saw a golf ball in my fairway on the way to my disc . Stay alert .
Equipment/navigation - the course has now been around for 2 years . I'm sure the parks and rec dept. is happy that no signs are on this course because it is easier to cut and no one has to edge around them , but not only does it make navigation confusing in spots , but it makes the course amateurish . There is NO excuse for signs not being here , and a kiosk should be near hole #1 , at least , Trying to find hole #10 ? It is up the hill on the left and back from the #9 basket . After hole #13 , your impulse is to go to #16 because it is the only visible tee . You have to cross the road and walk across the park for a couple of hundred feet to find tee 14 . This plays parallel to the road but away from it . #15 comes back up along the road toward where you were playing . #16 goes down the other side of the road ( where #13 finished ) .
#3 ZZZZZ - Set your snooze alarm on your watch for 75 minutes . There is one tight hole ( #5 ) that plays through small trees with canopies , and #6 with OB , and a couple of other holes , but without obstacles , the holes seem cookie cutter . Throw your driver , throw your midrange/putter , rinse and repeat .

Other Thoughts:

The reason for me reviewing this course was not to just put it down , I think the Parks & Rec Dept. opened up a lot of land and look to be receptive in promoting the game of disc golf . I just think that this course could be so much more . Planting a few trees and bushes , adding tee signs , maybe a kiosk and/or benches , even a shelter for players to congregate before or after a round .A set of shorter tees for the less gifted arms . It sounds like a wish list , but if added a little at a time ,,,, Thanks to Frankfort Disc Golf Association . I was told they did tireless work and promotion in order to make this course a reality . Check their web page out . Capitol City DGC is yet another good addition to the I-64 corridor between Lexington and Louisville .
My Recommendation - The course is open enough and disc risk is low . Even though short tees are warranted , this is a good place for intro or newbies . Too long for families or date , this course better serves the local playing population , intermediates thru pros . A course this long and open gives experienced players a chance to open up . Even though it is easy on the legs , the course might be a long play and too out of the way for a traveler , but Course Collectors will like the fact that you can pick up 2 courses ( East FF , too ) that are a few minutes apart . Not a course suited for you to go too far out of your way , but if in the Frankfort area and you have a couple of hours to kill , This Is An Okay Play !!

Capital City 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice terrain, seems to be well maintained. Very pretty park.

Cons:

Very open, few trees. Very poor tee signs, if any at all. Hard to maintain flow on the course. Favors the long arm, with little or no "spice" to the course. I found it to be a very boring course to play. Would be improved with planting some trees to make the holes more interesting, IMHO. I don't plan to go back there any time soon.

Other Thoughts:

I would hope it gets some serious attention in the future.
