great course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 13, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Great use of elevation changes. Probably almost 60% of holes incorporate a hill to some degree, even though many of them are fairly subtle, like less than 20 feet
*Very well maintained. It's still possible to lose a disc, just because the nature of the underbrush, but it's very "clean" for the most part.
*Some great views, especially as sunset is approaching.
*That first wooded hole (12) feels fantastic to play after those wide open first 11. Very beautiful and peaceful.
*Hole 16 has a certain "wildcard" factor because of the penalty for not hitting the island. It's not impossible that a player with a 3-4 shot lead over his cardmates could end up in a tie situation if they fail to hit the island and their cardmate(s) birdie. Interesting equalizer with just two holes to go.
*very generous pars, especially from the short tees. Some of the par 4s really do feel like they should be 3s

Cons:

*gets pretty busy a lot of evenings. If I see the main parking lot overflowing, I just turn around and go play Orchard Hills
*I wish there were more wooded holes. There are really only three, possibly four, depending on how you think of it. I like the wide open hilly holes, but there are like 5 of them and I wish they would have traded a few of them for some wooded holes.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, totally solid course. I played the short tees until I could pretty consistently end up under par, and then (mainly) switched to the longs, and will continue with those until I can start consistently ending up under par. This will probably be my main course until I can consistently start ending up under par, at which point I'll probably try to conquer Elver from the longs.

Great course, well maintained. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a great course to have in the Madison area. Well maintained, decent elevation changes, and never terribly busy. Great views. Just a bit off the Beltline and Madison proper, but is still a very peaceful place to play.

Cons:

Not terribly difficult holes, but still good course over all. BRING BUG SPRAY or the mosquitoes can carry you away. FYI for parents: If you have kids of a young age, even the little bit of elevation change on this course can be exhausting pushing a stroller.

Other Thoughts:

Probably the most under rated course in Madison. Nice that it's never super busy. Beautiful place to play a round. Not terribly difficult, nice wide fairways, but still takes control to stay out of the rough.

Solid 18 Hole Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Each hole offers its own unique challenge with multiple tees and pin positions. There are four holes that utilize the surrounding woods, which add the the challenge and variety to the course. Garbage cans at every hole and benches every few holes. Plenty of space as there aren't any other park entities that interfere with the course. There's a large dog park next to the course, which is nice too.

Cons:

There's a bird that lives in the tree near the basket on Hole 10. Someone needs to shoot this bird because it will dive bomb anyone that comes somewhat near the tree (which includes all hole locations for that hole).
The rough on Holes 12 and 13 can be pretty bad mid summer. Have a good eye for where your disc goes if you head into the rough.

friendly open course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wide open course with pro and normal tees. Great signage. Able to drink on the course. Well worth the fee to play. Spent the day there so much fun.

Cons:

My newbie drives found the rough a few times. Dense rough that would be expected.

Other Thoughts:

Few trees in the course compared to what I was expecting. Pleasant to see the local critters running around in the woods.

Another Great Addition to the Madison Area Courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course creates 18 fun, challenging holes by utilizing the terrain very well. The holes play mostly through a rolling, open prairie before diving into a forest filled with large oaks, then returning to the prairie again. Approximately 12 of the holes play through an open field, where much of the challenge is derived from utilizing elevation and having control of your disc in what may be at many times windy conditions. Another challenge in the open holes is the rough, which is quite thick. This isn't to say it is unfair, because the fairways are very wide. You will only be punished if you have a "very bad" shot. Most "bad" shots will find themselves on the outer edges of the fairway. During the round I played wind speeds were moderate, but strong enough to make me to think carefully about disc selection and disc flight lines. Once the course enters the woods, disc control and shot shaping become important. The lines aren't overly tight, and the rough is more forgiving should you careen off a tree. Holes 9 and 18 are both fun downhill tosses combined with very wide fairways, allowing for a variety of ways to attack the basket. Hole 16 is an island green hole, where your drive must land inside a roughly 60 foot diameter landing area or else you must re-tee from a drop zone. It's a creative idea that was utilized at Vallarta-Ast as well, and is a welcome addition at Capital Springs, too.

Other Pros:
-There's a port-a-potty by the main kiosk
-Plenty of parking
-Beautiful scenery comprised of prairies, wetlands, and some nice views on top of the rolling hills
-Well-manicured, with large flared tee pads, nice tee signs, and garbage receptacles at all holes (think Vallarta-Ast if you have played it).

Cons:

The open holes can be repetitive, even with the elevation changes. There just aren't a lot of trees to force you to shape your shots. This means many of the open hole baskets can be attacked with a RHBH, RHFH, overhand, etc., with equal results as the challenge comes from distance and wind control more than anything. This isn't a bad feature of a course on a few holes, but it occurs here more often than not. Another con I noticed was the proximity of some holes to one another. There are a few times where an errant drive will drift onto another tee pad or fairway. I had to jump over a disc on the hole one tee pad that would have taken me out at the shins if the guy teeing off at 9 hadn't given a loud "fore".

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a fun course now that will only get better as it gets more "beat in", if you will. Right now, I can see the rough being an issue for those who don't have a great control of their game, and occasionally an issue for those who do. As the course gets played more, though, it won't be such a challenge to find an errant shot.

I can also see the wind factoring heavily on how difficult the course is on a given day, with the majority of the holes being open.

All in all, this course is another great addition to the Madison area. With at least 6 great courses within a half-hour drive, Madison is becoming a great destination for disc golf in the Midwest.
