Hear Fury, but No Fury Here

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Camp Wilderness is a great course built with beginners/families in mind and features 9 brand new, numbered DISCatcher baskets, natural tees marked by Innova tee markers, and numbered flags to label the tees. The course is built into a small field, with few obstacles in play. With that in mind, and an average hole length just over 160 feet, families who are staying at the campground can have a blast without feeling overwhelmed. The camp also offers disc rentals in the office.

Hole 4 can be played multiple ways. I think the intended gap was the low tunnel to the left, but it is also easy to park the basket by throwing a hyzer around the right of the trees.

Holes 1, 7, & 9 all play downhill. Holes 7 & 9 also have fast greens with the creek just behind the baskets. I am not sure if said creek always has water, but it had rained for a couple days before I played. Great news, the course seemed to drain really well!

It was pretty unique playing a disc golf round while listening to the sounds of Fury 365 (which I think was only running test circuits) after being renovated due to the crack found in one of the uprights.

Cons:

The course is extremely simple. As I said before there are virtually no obstacles, outside of the tunnel on 4 (which I already mentioned is also optional), and the holes are mostly less than 200 feet. I brought two putters, and just alternated throwing them and was off the course in less than 15 minutes.

The course definitely suffers from being baskets placed in a small field. When you first arrive, it can be confusing where to start, or which basket you are throwing to. Of course this could have been a me problem, since I started on Hole 9. (I parked right next to Hole 8's basket.) Once I got to Hole 1, it seemed much simpler. But the other issue is there are a couple of places where fairways cross, or can potentially cross.

There are some parking spots for campsites on the fairway of Hole 2. When I played there was a car parked within C1 of the basket. Virtually made the hole much harder to play without risking hitting a car and was forced to jump putt down the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

I think the course fulfills its purpose supremely well, but at the end of the day it is just another pitch-&-putt course, albeit in a unique setting. For those reasons, I think it deserves a 1.0 rating. If you are a family camping here or a desperate course bagger who already has plans to hit up Carowinds, this would probably be a fun track to play. For everyone else, I don't think this is a course anyone should reasonably travel out of their way for.

Not very amusing

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

The newest attraction at Carowinds has nothing to do with thrills or rides. It's their 9-hole disc golf course.
- This is a basic, easy-flowing layout through a campground. The campground is separate from the amusement park and is available for play (seemingly) anytime.
- Mid-range layout, with holes ranging in length from 106 to 214 feet. I played the course with a putter and mid-range.
- Course is aimed at beginners and casual players. Layout is very simple and outside of #4, there are hardly any obstacles in play.
- It's cool having roller coasters as your backdrop, especially on #5 & 6.
- There's a little bit of elevation with #1, 7, & 9 playing downhill and #8 playing uphill. I also enjoyed teeing off next to the creek bed on #2 & 3.

Cons:

The lack of obstacles/challenge. I get it's for casuals, but it would have been nice to have something to break up the string of open layouts.
- It'd be easy to throw to the wrong basket. Holes are in close proximity to each other. Standing on almost every tee, you can see multiple baskets.
- Employee parking lot and offices are both next to the course. Between that and/or peak campground times, I can imagine the course being unplayable (or at least portions of it).

Other Thoughts:

For a simple layout, Camp Wilderness is a perfectly adequate course. The benefit of being connected to an amusement park is that the course was in impeccable condition. You don't see that at many camp/campground courses.
- #1 is a fun hole to throw an extra disc or two. It's good for an ace run. Granted, you can say that about multiple holes here.
- Fun idea: now that we've seen Carowinds get into the disc golf game, can we get a temporary course set up inside the amusement park in the off-season? We've seen baseball stadiums set up temporary courses in them. We've seen amusement parks set up races throughout them. Why not a course that's winding throughout the park?
- There isn't a lot that's memorable here. It's a very simple layout. Maybe #7, as a slight downhill, slight dogleg right is the best hole? #3's tee shot is the most scenic throw.
- We're overwhelmed with basic 9-hole courses throughout York County, SC. This one sneaked right across the border.
