Happy there is a course right on the island 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- I am very happy there is now an easily accessible course right on the island, and doesn't require at least a one hour drive to play during vacation
- great baskets
- good use of land and it is very obvious all the hard work put into it
- very easy/clear navigation especially for a course that will have a high number of first timers at it, which is crucial

Cons:

- VERY wooded, to the point where some holes or shots are "Chuck and Pray"
- some of the lines are not actual disc golf lines that anyone less than a top touring pro can hit
- righty friendly, and the very few "lefty hyzer" holes do not have a clear path to access the green

Other Thoughts:

Speaking as someone who helps work on courses, I can tell you it is very obvious of all the extremely hard work that has gone in to this course. So my con comments above are not meant to take away from that or to be negative. I hope that some additional tinkering can be done to make some of the lines cleaner and maybe make it a little more lefty friendly. Thank you to all who have put in any time to make this course what it currently is!

Would've been fun if not for the flies! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Good variety. Some fairways are relatively straight, some go left and some right. Trees make each hole different.

2) Signage was great. No trouble finding the next hole.

3) Tee pads were fine but could obviously be improved.

Cons:

1) Biting flies were brutal!!! They wouldn't leave me alone. I literally had 3 flies fly into my mouth during my one round. They were relentless! For some reason, they didn't bother my son nearly as much. I didn't have deodorant, cologne or anything else on. I was wearing a little more sunscreen than him but I don't know that that was the problem. I didn't even pause to analyze shots the last few holes because I just had to get out of there. Do not go in the summer without bug spray!

2) Too many trees on some holes. Sometimes no decent options even off the tee. I got to practice a lot of thumbers/tomahawks though due to no clear paths.

3) The sign on the 6th tee pad was too close to my follow through and affected my shot since I was worried about hitting/gashing my hand on the sign.

Other Thoughts:

My son would rate the course a 3 and I would rate it a 2 so I'm giving it a 2.5. It hadn't rained in several days when we played so the conditions were dry so we had no issues with standing water. It was hot, but much of the course was in the woods so it wasn't too bad. I couldn't enjoy the course due to the flies but would play again wearing bug spray to see if that does the trick.

Vacation Activity 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Well made and maintained lanes
- Easy flow with clear markings
- Challenging, narrow lanes of play in a small wooded area
- Hole 16 is neat, bumping up on the dunes/state park.
- Course is mostly shaded, but the trees also block a breeze

Cons:

- Length of holes are all rather short, but it is probably best in for the wooded conditions
- Little variety of hole type
- Couldn't get away from some pesky flies

Other Thoughts:

Driving to the course feels a bit sketchy, going past the schools, getting on a stone/dirt road, and being away from public view. Feels like private property. Perhaps some signs could help.

I was happy to see a course pop up in our traditional vacation area.

Lots of potential for this OBX DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 17, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Major kudos to the visionaries, designers, builders, and volunteers who made the Casey R. Logan (or OBX) DGC a reality. This is the only course on the Outer Banks, as far as I know, and it's well worth playing it if you are in the area.

+ My favorite aspect of this course is the design. A lot of thought was put into it, it's easy to see. There is a good mixture of hole layouts (straight, left, and right) and distances. Good use of the trees and topography.

+ This is a very unique piece of land for a DGC. First, it's basically in a swamp (I'll elaborate on that some in the Con's). There are trees and water to contend with -- then the course emerges from the swamp on hole 16 and you see the enormous sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge. It doesn't really feel like a beach course until this section of the track. It's a peaceful spot and I imagine wind is a constant challenge to contend with. Fittingly, since the Wright Brother's National Memorial borders the park, small prop planes fly low over the property pretty regularly. It's a neat spot.

+ The course is challenging, but for the most part, fair.

+ Navigation is simple and intuitive. No issues with course flow or missing signs. The tee signs are accurate and show the hole layouts.

+ New baskets

+ My 2.5 rating is somewhat aspirational. You'll see in the cons, there are a number of challenges to even having a course here. But the design is great and it's the only course for miles and miles around. So, I'm super grateful it's here.

Cons:

If this course wasn't brand new and wasn't the only course on the Outer Banks, I probably would've given in a 2.0. But I think many of the challenges here can be overcome as the course is beaten in. If you're visiting the OBX, do your part and play it!

- No tee pads yet.The ground can get pretty muddy and the tee areas, especially, are slick.

- Lots of stumps and sticks to step over. Hopefully, with time, this will get taken care of as the course is beaten in.

- The number one con for me is water. The course was super soggy when I played. (I mean, it's no surprise, this is a swamp, after all.) There was standing water in between holes and on some fairways. And in several spots, there was no way to walk around the water and you have to test your tight-rope skills on trees and logs. The course desperately needs some bridges and boardwalks. I know that costs money and manpower, but hopefully that's something that can happen. This fix alone would probably bump this course to a 3.0 for me.

- I didn't deal with mosquitoes, but I played it in the winter. My sense is -- with the standing water, the swamp, and even just the location at the beach -- mosquitoes will be a big problem in the warmer months. There's no fix for this other than to wear long sleeves and pants and put on bug spray. If you have the option to play in the winter, that's probably a better time to experience this course.

- As with most new, wooded courses, there are a few more trees that could/should probably get taken out. Not too many. Overall, it's challenging and fair. But there are a few poke and hope holes.

- One design piece I didn't understand was making the short tees the white tees and the long tees the red tees. As far as challenge goes, I thought the short tees were about white level (intermediate), so they're not misnamed, but the long tees should've been blue (advanced) instead of red (rec).

Other Thoughts:

Again, major props to the folks who made this course happen. Considering what they had to work with, it's great. It'll take a lot more work to make this course a 3.0 or even higher, in my book, but considering what the OBX DG Club has done so far, I wouldn't bet against them.
