Castle Hayne 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Challenging layout for pros and Ams alike. Mostly wooded fairways offering adequate landing zones and punishing lies off the fairway. Great mix of shot shapes with numerous par 3s, 4s, and even a few 5's.

Large concrete pads (except for two pads which are wood with rubber mats) - could use some TLC as some of them are beginning to show wear.

Foliage - Local club provides adequate maintenance to fairways, bushes, trees, etc. During Spring/Summer expect to see some lines disappear due to greenery.

Park - Adequate parking, bathrooms, and facilities. Trash cans located through the park and on the course.

Local retailer Cape Fear Games offers a large variety of disc golf discs, apparel, etc. as well as being a liaison for the local club.

Cons:

Baskets - What may have used to have been great baskets are certainly starting to show wear. Some wash out around the basket collars on numerous holes cause the illusion of false elevation. A few of the baskets have some bent cages, rusted chain assemblies, etc. ( to be expected as the majority of the baskets are original to the course.

Topography - Course is prone to standing water after hard rains due to little to no elevation changes. Course remains playable after rain but expect to have wet socks if you are playing after a downpour.

Layout - Unfortunately after a necessary redesign some of the transitions can be a little long. If you have not played Castle before, make sure to take note of the park layout (especially the transition from 9-10) at the warm-up holes kiosk.

Pads - A handful of the pads could use some TLC as they are beginning to show their age. On the 2 elevated wooden pads the use of restaurant style rubber no slip kitchen mats can cause to much grip. Would love to see something new here, possibly turf.

Other Thoughts:

Bring bug spray in the summer months.

Short pad areas are beginning to instituted although the current short pad layout leaves much to be desired and could use some reworking. Hopefully the club plays around with different teeing areas before thinking of permanent solutions.

Ending thoughts - Castle Hayne is a great park and disc golf course. Its is known as a challenging championship level course that makes you work for your score on every hole. Personally I would have liked to have seen some alternate pin positions or additional alternate long pad offerings before succumbing to a short layout but that is neither here nor there. The hardware on the course is certainly beginning to show its age and could desperately use some of the new technology that is now available as far as baskets and tee pads. If you are a beginner looking to play for score this course can be very daunting but is still a lot of fun to play so do not get discouraged! Fortunately there are also other courses in the area that offer a more beginner friendly layout.

p.s. the club in the area has been around since the inception of this course and offers a wealth of knowledge on disc golf, local courses, techniques, and plenty of other disc golf related items so feel free to ask around for advice.
