As beautiful as it gets 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 3, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-This course has gone through changes. Some good, some bad. Course has 18 holes so it's no longer incomplete. The new holes are across the road from what you'll see after you play what is now hole 3.

-Course has gotten tougher with some challenging but fair OB rules. The tee-signs say what the OB is.

-#11 and 13 are fun downhill bomber throws. Both over 400'. #11 allows you to rip a driver. The parking lot is close, but a left to right crush should keep you in the fairway. #13 has more risk. It's 480, and the OB path is to the right and can be tough to avoid if your shot goes right.

-Course attributes better than it used to with woods. The new 5 and 6 are challenging wooded holes. #5 is uphill about 20' and gently cuts right. The fairway is tight and the woods are penalizing, so this hole is a very difficult birdie, but can be done. #6 is even tougher! It's short, like maybe 240'. However, it's a dogleg left that goes back uphill into the woods. There is a low clearance once you enter the woods, so this is preferably a skipshot hyzer hole.

-There are multiple elevated baskets. Some basket placements are scary too. #3 is perched on a the side of a hill. But this hole is along a sloping hill that's more than capable of rolling you OB. I've aced this hole, and I've gotten a 7. #9 is the major downhill shot by the pond. I've lost probably thirty discs in that pond because I went big. Hole itself though is picturesque, and you'll want to throw more than one disc.

-Discs available for use in the gym. Many students borrow them because they love the game!

Cons:

-The worst thing is the fact that there are so many dinker holes. #1 (the old #2) was shortened. It's a 180' putter toss that leads to a dangerous putt because of the risk of your disc rolling to the bottom of the hill. #2 is a short putter toss back up. #3 is another putter shot that's under 200'. #4 is awful. It's a boring 150' uphill hole around a tree. Course sucks until you get to #5.

-#18. You either love or hate it. Well, I really don't love it. It's like 150' and the basket is past a huge tree where the eno kids love to sleep in. The limbspan is maybe 100' and there is OB to the right side in order to "protect" the highway. But if you're hyzer goes bad, you might be on the highway. Not to mention, the basket is elevated on a 4' post.

-Many joggers and other students using the fields.

-The overgrown bushes can get really bad in the summertime on hole 14. Hole 16 is pretty rough too during that time.

-Land restrictions are bogus. Turns out, the layout is well designed for what is "available." A land restriction was prevented in the woods where hole 5 is. This hole was a 450-500' par 4 that's back downhill and out of the woods to the left side. This would easily without question be the greatest hole in the area if the land restrictions weren't as strict.

Other Thoughts:

-Catamount Links is a decent course on a great campus. I think if there was more flexibility, this course would be a whole lot better. But at least some holes have woods now. And at least you have opportunities to crush a driver.

So close, and yet so far. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Geographically, the course it set in a beautiful valley with great views of the surrounding mountains. There are public restrooms nearby, along with a few food options and easy parking. Each hole is clearly marked and easy to spot, so there's no real hunting for where you're going if you've never been there before.

Cons:

The course starts out so nicely. Holes 1-5 are the best the course has to offer (assuming the band is not practicing on #1 as Oso has previously mentioned). From then on, though, you lose the elevation changes and get out in the flats where all you do is throw your arm out a bunch due to the length of the holes and absence of obstacles. The later holes that follow the creek give you the pleasure of having to search through tall, disc-eating grass and weeds to find your disc if you're unfortunate enough to land in them. At least the course ends with an interesting hole on #12 where you're throwing blind over a small drop off... Just don't throw too hard, or you're back in the tall weeds or wading through the creek to find your plastic.

Also, due to the fact that it IS a college campus and there are students and student housing around the course, you'll most likely have to contend with students walking through some fairways causing delays in your game.

Other Thoughts:

This was my home course for a while, as I was a student at WCU for many years. I say that this course could have been so much better because the land really is awesome. Too bad they don't try to make a full 18 holes by continuing the course through the back (and much more interesting / challenging) end of campus.

If they planted some trees... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 5, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course utilizes elevation changes pretty well on several holes, but flattens out as you go along. No. 3 is a great uphill ace run, and no. 5 is a fun downhill, but would be even better if they put the pin on the other side of the pond.

Cons:

The course has some major design flaws. No. 1 is unplayable during band practice, no. 11 can be during soccer games, and the whole course would be way better off without that driving range there, although I guess they probably say the same thing.

Some holes are completely forgettable, and wide open. Aside from 4, 8,9 and 12 there are no trees in play, and very few obstacles at all.

No. 7 and no. 8 are wet pretty frequently. There's some pretty bad drainage in that valley, but if they planted some trees or did some sort of landscaping that would help with the water and make the course more interesting. If they moved the driving range they could do some great redesigning of several holes and add some more in there.

Other Thoughts:

At last Western students don't have to drive 30 minutes to play disc golf, but Waynesville DGC still makes much better use of some very similar land. But that's a course that coexists with the other uses of the land, and this course is one pushed aside by the other uses.
