Catawba Meadows

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Catawba Meadows is an open course with enough trees throughout to keep things interesting. The course shares the park with multiple ball fields, picnic areas, restrooms, a greenway, and what appears to be a Ropes Course - which likely is only open periodically. The course features concrete tees, tee signs with decent breakdowns of the holes, DISCatcher baskets, and multiple layouts.

The red layout is a perfect place for beginners to learn the game , and for Rec, Intermediate and Advanced players to enjoy a nice round of birdie hunting. The blue layout pushes the distances out and will allow bigger arms to air out their drivers. The holes have multiple pin positions listed on the signs, which would allow the local club to tweak the course to fit their current needs, and to keep the course from getting stale for regular players. Every hole is fairly wide open, but there are a few trees on each hole and a handful of mandos around the course to contend with.

Overall the course seems to be maintained well, the grass was mowed all around the course which was nice. The course seemed to flow well, and I never really had any navigational questions throughout my round. The tee signs/posts are also color coded which allows you to easily determine whether you are at the right tee or not for your hole. There even seemed to be a potentially new long pad poured on Hole 8, which means the course is still seeing a lot of love from the B.A.D. disc golf club.

Though the land is relatively flat, the course designers clearly tried to incorporate what limited elevation was available.

Hole 17 Long is a highlight on the course as a fun, challenging hole, where placement is key and an element of risk/reward in play for those trying to bite off extra distance from the tee.

Cons:

I'd say most holes don't really have a "fairway", because the course is so open, there are just general directions that the disc needs to be thrown to travel towards the basket. While there were a couple of mandos on the course, they were mostly utilized near the end of fairways, to force fade in one direction or the other. It would have been nice to see them utilized to force different angles out of the hand. Outside of Hole 17, I didn't feel like the mandos forced me to truly change the angle of release when driving.

The rough around the basket on Hole 2 was some of the worst I've ever seen so close to the basket. Especially when said basket is blind from the tee. It would be relatively easy to lose a disc that landed near the edge of the Circle in that mess, depending on the color. Some locals told me it was particularly overgrown the day I played, so maybe this isn't always as big of an issue. This is really one time there is rough that is bad enough (from what I saw) to lose a disc, and it's a shame that the blind shot likely results in a lot of time spent looking for discs. Without this rough, Hole 2 would have been among my favorite holes on the course, because the risk/reward of potentially ending up in the OB creek makes for a fun tee shot.

While the tee signs were mostly great, one huge improvement that could be considered would be to find a way to indicate which pin position the hole was in on the post. I've seen a few easy solutions done on other courses. While the baskets were usually visible, it would have still been nice.

Holes 16 - 18 feel a bit cramped considering how much space the rest of the course takes up. This would probably only be an issue during tournaments or on extremely busy days, but it should be noted that a bad tree kick on any of these holes could send you to one of the other ones.

Other Thoughts:

Catawba Meadows is a nice course to break away from the traditional woods golf that NC is known for. Whether you are a Recreational, Intermediate, or Advanced player, Catawba Meadows is worth checking out. While playing it, you will definitely feel the much deserved love it gets from the local club.

I definitely would love to stop back by, and check the course out again (and check out the red layout), but for now I am giving it a 3.0 rating. While it is fun to air out some shots, the course felt just a little bit too repetitive, even when compared to other courses I have played that utilize similar tracts of open land sprinkled with a few trees. I think something unique, even if it were just a second elevated basket, could help spice up the middle section of the course where the repetition is at its worst.

Favorite Blue Holes: 8, 16, 17

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played Catawba Meadows after about 2-3 days of constant rain, so course conditions were pretty lousy. I am trying not to let that impact my rating too much. I will list drainage and flooding issues as a con, but don't want that to take too much away from a course that has so many other good qualities. When *I* played the course, it deserved a 2.5. But I could certainly see that on a nice, sunny day, my playing experience would have been at least .5 to a point higher. Therefore, I settled on 3.0, giving it the benefit of the doubt. All in all, a solid course.

1. Beautiful setting, ball golf style course. It's just an immaculate park, very well maintained, with great facilities. There's a walking trail around the course, an amazing playground (literally one of the coolest "adventure-looking" playgrounds I've seen, so bring the kids). They did a fantastic job with this park.

2. This is an open course that is both aesthtically appealing, but challenging for beginners to intermediate-level players. There are also opportunities to really air it out for bigger arms. Nice to have red and blue tees. Something for everybody here.

3. The tee pads could be another couple feet longer, but they were plenty wide and good quality.

4. The tee signs are helpful, but I thought the yardage was off on a few. I think some alt basket locations must have been added. Still, the signs were good and clearly marked the red and blue tees.

5. I like the risk/reward element on hole #2. The basket is RIGHT on the edge of a creek, a steep bank to the creek anyway, so you have to make the decision to go for a birdie and risk going OB or layup for a par.

6. Some reviews have mentioned the mandos as a negative. I thought they were fine. Anyway, they were well marked and didn't take away anything for me. One set of double mandos forces you to drive in between two trees and keeps you away from the walking trail. For safety reasons, I think that was a smart design element.

7. Good elevation on this course. The foothills are truly the best place, i think, to install a disc golf course. (I'm also a huge fan of Rolling Pines and Yadkin County Park). Catawaba Meadows isn't at that level -- not as much elevation and not nearly in the same league in terms of quality -- but still an above average, open course with a decent mix of uphills and downhills.

8. Nice to have some par 4's mixed in.

9. Pick up a scorebard near the bathroom and playground. It helps with navigation. There are no signs pointing you to the next hole, even though it's usually pretty obvious. On a few holes, there are 2 tees close to the basket you finished on, so the map helps you avoid back-tracking if you guess the wrong tee.

Cons:

1. The major con for me was drainage. Again, I played this course on a less than ideal day, but still, the flooding was out of control. There were rivers running through the course that couldn't be avoided. Standing water everywhere and super muddy. I don't know that there's anything that can be done about this, unfortunately, other than play it on a dry day unless you don't care about getting muddy.

2. I thought the course was a bit repetitive. There was some variety of elevation, and there was the risk/reward element on #2, but for the most part, the holes were pretty similar, all open, and the only variance was length. There wasn't really a signature hole, in my opinion.

3. One aspect that disappointed me was the street noise. It's such a beautiful setting in the foothills: you have this big, open meadow with tall, mature trees dotting the hills, you're right next to the Catawba River. It LOOKS like it should be so peaceful. But the busy road on a ridge going around the course spoils it. It almost gives it an urban park feel, even though it's not at all. Most folks reading this probably won't have this course to compare to, but to me, the most similar course in my experience is Zilker Park in Austin, TX. It's also a big, open course with rolling hills and mature trees. But it's in downtown Austin with a major highway beside it. I wasn't expecting that feel in small town Morganton, NC.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, Catawba Meadows is a good course and one that I would definitely play again if given the opportunity. It's close to I-40, so make the stop if you're driving through.

Parklike, open course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful park with lots of activities, including ropes course.

Visually appealing with landscaping and a parklike setting. Sporadic large trees.

Very nice, large teepads.(see cons below)

Good signage and navigation.

The hole design was generally fair with the majority being fairly straight and pretty long. From the long tees, there were very few deuce or die holes. Most required an accurate tee shot of 300+ (or equivalent) to get a birdie.
The par 4's were generally pretty easily birdie-able with two decent shots. Some holes had a low ceiling which provided an additional challenge.

Well-maintained, you'd be hard-pressed to lose a disc.

The holes were generally good based on the terrain and number of trees. It's generally an open course with a few somewhat technical shots created by mandos or double mandos.

Cons:

The teepads, while quite large and very nice, sometimes had a retaining wall around the side and/or back. This could create an issue for those who have a long run up or big strides.

Navigation and signage were good, but a few of the holes were using alt basket locations that were not represented on the signs.

A few of the holes were a little redundant, mid 300' open.

The use of mandos was done to create some more technical shots. Some were fine a couple seemed unnecessary, particularly hole 17.

There is potential for some overlap with other players, although it was not crowded at all when I was there on a Sunday Morning.

Other Thoughts:

It's a long walk from the parking to all of the holes except for one.

Given the limitations of the property as far as elevation, they did a good job in creating some uphill and downhill shots.

I believe that based on the open nature of the course, wind could be an issue. But that would put some teeth into a generally pretty manageable course.

Definitely a course worth playing. It provides a nice leisurely round in a nice setting.

Very cool 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This is the perfect beginner/intermediate course in a nice more open place. If you have a decent arm and some accuracy, you will score under par for sure. I shot -7 and have okay accuracy and a big arm. This course is also beautiful if you play on a sunny day.
-Some trees around there to make it fun.
-I like the pads here! They are wider in the back so they allow you to play a hole pretty much how you want.
-Nice double chain discCatchers on the course.
-There are some really interesting/fun holes on this course! #7 and #8 both utilize elevation very nicely. #7 is an uphill ace run and #8 is a long downhill shot through a few trees. At 526' long, and the longest on the shorts, this seems like a difficult hole but it's a pretty easy birdie 3.
-#17 long, very unique par 4! This is a severe dogleg left with a mando pointing to the right. This is the hardest hole available here, birdies don't happen often but it's a great enough shot just to get to the short pad.
-Front 9 is really easy, I shot -5 on it. Back nine is average. #11 is another hard hole, it forces you to make a decision. Since there is a mando 275' from the tee, and the hole is only 306', you have to decide whether you'll lay up or try to go through it.
-Very nice practice basket around #1.
-I actually think the creek around #17 and #18 is a great addition to the course. Even if it has a disc eating problem.

Cons:

-If I just rated this course for fun, I'd give it an easy 4.0. But face it, it's crammed in. A good shot can lead you to another fairway, plus you still have the capacity to get a REALLY easy par if you nail a tree and it goes to another fairway. Hole #8, I landed in #5's fairway and still managed to birdie this hole.
-There are some wooded areas, it wouldn't hurt to have a nice wooded hole. It would be great. #9 is slightly wooded and requires a low shot because of a lower ceiling but it isn't truly wooded, my accuracy needs work and I almost aced this hole, it's a good hole with some defense nevertheless. #18 is also slightly wooded, only hole here that won't accept a straight shot.
-There is graffiti on a couple of baskets, some of those stupid, pointy, bubbly, clowny white trash letters are put on one or two of the baskets.
-Needs both, more benches and trash cans.
-My run up is HUGE, like can't be less than 10'. Pads are a little bit short, but nothing bad.
-Few back tees just 20' behind the shorts, makes no sense. Why do you want another tee pad with all the limited space?

Other Thoughts:

-If I found the time to play the longs, I would have for sure because they looked really fun too. This course is very fun, I loved it. I think the lack of variety and the fact that it's crammed in is why I gave it a 3.0. This course and layout itself rocks but if you aren't careful, you could get in somebody's way.
-From the longs, you will see more variety. Lengths range from 212' to 600' and there are more woods and still some of that great open area like holes 17 and 18 being more wooded and hole 10 being a really fun more open bomb!
-I had some cons with this course but I think my pros are far more important because all of my cons are nothing major. Like some holes here are majorly fun with a decent amount of elevation, and different lengths. Just play this course, it was well worth an hour drive. Problem was only that my GPS didn't work at first and I had no idea where I was going or where to stop when I stopped in Newton.

Favorite Hole: #8. Great downhill par 4!

Wide Open NC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great signs, if you are just starting out, some tips and information about the biology of the park. If you're there for the DG, it has distance, major obstacles and direction to the next tee.
- Park is super clean, and almost only for DG. There is a walking path, but it doesn't really come into play. The "meadow" was mowed, no real issue with losing discs in long grass.
- Nice tees, retaining walls serve as benches in the first half.
- Practice putting basket, restrooms and drinking fountains where you park. Playground equipment if you have younger kids.
- Decent flow - only a few holes are confusing (because you can see several baskets from the tee). Once you play it once, I'm sure it's not a problem.
- Decent use of elevation.

Cons:

- It gets boring (I'm from the Raleigh area, and have grown up on trees). If you can throw 300' with some aim/consistency, at least half of the holes are pretty much wide open. There really is no "rough" - if there were brush, or if they didn't flay mow the meadow, you could maybe shape some fairways, island greens, etc.
- It is kind of far off the interstate, probably 10-15 minutes depending on lights. It's not necessarily a course you could jump off the interstate, play a quick round and jump back on.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course with two friends who don't play a ton. It was right about their speed. I shot a par, even though I had several throws where I didn't have a great tee shot. This is not pitch and putt, you can use drivers (and actually can rip them since there are very few trees). If you were learning, this is a forgiving course where you can feel good (although it may give a false sense of security before playing the "typical" NC course). I did like the run of holes 15-18, they were slightly different as the trees came into play (having to shape shots to avoid some of the lower limbs). I would stop and play here again. I "inflated" my score by 1/2 due to the very nice signs and general cleanliness of the park.

Pros:

Newly built, nice baskets, good for newcomers to the sport due to mostly open fairways, rarely have to wait, and easy to find.

Cons:

Not much of a challenge (too open), no tee pads (muddy holes after a light rain), grass needs to be cut more often than not, and hole 16 can become a swamp after a descent rain.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course to practice on or to take new comers to the sport so that they can get use to it without losing their (or your) discs.

Still Growing Up 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 21, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- This is a great course for beginners and those that want to work on specific parts of their game without the narrow fairways of most North Carolina courses.
- Several holes have long teepads and many of them not only add distance but they also require a different type of shot than you would use from the shorts.
- Nice practice basket with enough room to get some good practice putts in.
- The course is easy to navigate with tee signs at each hole and has nice DISCatcher Pro baskets.
- The course makes use of the occasional mando which keeps the course from getting too repetitive. (I'm told only to use the white signs for mandos the blue paint on trees are old)
- The course is in a very well kept park with nice facilities including some sort of rope course for the brave that I wouldn't dare attempt. Would be a great place to bring the family out for a round and a day at the park.
- The teepads are very nice and each allows you to take several routes for your drive.
- Each hole now has a very nice teesign at both the long and short tees. The signs give information about the hole as well as cool park information and disc golf tips for the particular hole in question.

Cons:

- Many holes have different routes you can take but no holes really forced you to get out of your comfort zone with a different style of shot.

Other Thoughts:

The courses name is Catawba Meadows so as you would expect you will be playing in an open field littered with trees. While it might not hold much challenge to the more advanced golfer it is still a great course to work on different aspects of your game. This course is still very new and overtime with some local love I see it getting even better. So if you are in the area I would definitely recommend stopping by and giving it a try.

**Update 5/15/2013: Teepads and Benches added to the course.

Bland.. but Bomberable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 6, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Starting off I like to let everyone know what Im personally looking for in a course. I love the scenic aspect of disc golf (this includes boulders, lakes, wildlife, and plantlife- I do study horticulture). With that being stated, I rate a course based on a combination of the scenic factor and the overall course aspects (this includes layout, fairway lines, divesity of holes, and amenities).
DISCatcher baskets
-Decent sinage giving length, no map but you dont need one just throw it straight! On like every hole haha where is the diversity??
-Two sets of tees with concrete now so I updated my review to a 3.0
-Bathroom and water fountain with a mini pro shop, very nice overall park

Cons:

-No wooded fairways at all!!! Several pines dot the fairways but if you hit your line they really shouldnt come into play
-No epic/scenic factor here for me because of the overall flat land and no wooded/water/boulders in play
-Its like so strait and no difference in any of your shots, bland and really boring unless you can throw one like 350' dead strait then this is your ace run course.
-17 is a ridicuosly stupid hole, a 537' par 3(do what??!!) that has a mando which doesnt allow you to even have a chance at a 3, its not fair at all. If your gonna have a par 3 that long at least make it playable to air it out, were not all pro's.
-I began playing on super tight rather short courses so this is the polar opposite of what I look for in a dg course

Other Thoughts:

It also felt like you walked a pretty good ways after every hole, to be wide open you would think the tees are in rather close proximity to the baskets
And if you are going to make trees obstacles, you should have them placed where the trunk comes into play, not the lower hanging branches like #1 is tucked under. Its rather stupid to have a good drive and have no chance at a birdie because the branches are so low they are blocking your view of the basket for birdie!

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wide open course, good place to rip some drives, some nice "ace runs" holes. Long and short tee pads. Playing the long tees feels like a completely different course from the shorts which I think is great.
There are also lots of fields on the property which makes it a great place to practice. I like to go out and practice in the field and then play a round or two. There are restrooms and water fountain also well.

Cons:

Most holes from the short tee pads are straight. You don't really need a variety of shots to play well here. In the summer time the grass can grow pretty high which is a little bit annoying

Other Thoughts:

The tee pads are natural which I actually prefer but they can get very wet and muddy after it rains. I bought some cleats for $15 which solves the problem.

I only rated this course a 3 because it's pretty basic. It's not very technical. If you've got a big arm you'll most likely find it a little easy. Some of the holes can seem a little long for a beginner but there aren't a lot of places to get in trouble.
This is my home course and I enjoy playing here but I consider it more of a practice course. If I want to really challenge myself I'll play at Glen Hilton Park in Hickory or go down to Charlotte. However, if you're in the area you won't be disappointed.

Holy Mando 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Very attractive course with good course design that takes advantage of the parks elevation changes.
- Great use of Mandos, there is alot of double mandos on this course but they are all very fair and add to the challenge of the course quite a bit.
- Easy to navigate, and multiple Teepads for several holes.
- Clean bathrooms and a nice gazebo right at hole one.
- Great for beginners and more advanced players alike.

Cons:

- Natural teepads.
- Lack of Benches and trashcans throughout course.
- The teesigns are sufficient but could use an upgrade.

Other Thoughts:

At first glance I was afraid that this course was going to become repetitive as most of it is set out in a field, with what appears to be few trees. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this isnt the case at all. The course designer did a great job at using everything the park gave him, and put in several mandos that increased the challenge of the course. I would reccommend playing it to anyone thinking about it.

more open than most in the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Posts have been added to tees; with blue painted tops for long and red for short.
A solid 3 rated course; nothing brutal (like a number of the Charlotte courses); but, overall, a nice, ball golf type of feel.
Elevation and trees used well.
I enjoyed the mandos; and from what other reviewers have said; I believe we played all of them. (There are, of course, players who find mandos to be kind of gimmicky; and one of our group of four is one of these players....however, I'm the one who missed three of them off the tee; and I still enjoyed them). A just missed mado forced me to make a nicely executed, off hand (lefty for me), forehand shot to save par.
Missing a mando, will force you to execute some unique shots....
We played even holes long tees, and odd, short; thus, getting a feel for both. (Some tees same for both). Enjoyed both sets of tees. Somewhat of a bomber course from longs; and the youngest member of our crew made up ground on the long tees. (Half of the holes 350+ from long tees with 2 at 500+ and one 609 ft.)
Counting the mandos and some other tunnel line designs; Catawba has some definite signature type holes on it.
We did not really struggle with any navigational issues. Pathways to next basket must be worn in well enough....
No tall grass issues either; but we were here at the end of March...before it had a chance to grow much. I may imagine it would add another degree of toughness to upshots (shooting from tall grass inhibits your shots some times; and, I have enjoyed some designer's intentional use of this...but, I can be weird in this regard). I kind of feel a designer needs to use what he has to work with....

Cons:

Natural tees were very muddy and slippery.
Course is somewhat plain, but this is relative to the great ones not far away. Most players would find Catawba comparable to a fairly top flight course; especially if mandos are played.....To sum this up; if you have a 300 foot drive or so dialed in; you are reaching most pins. Long tees, long shots; will be 300 ft. drive and upshot and a 3... Therefore, gold level players will not be impressed; and for blue level, course will seem moderately challenging and kind of plain. (We played best shot doubles here and were quite a bit under par; but, I also believe that of our group of four; two of us, 900+ rated players; that there is the possibility we all could have been over par from long tees; so, do not expect an easy course by any means.)

Other Thoughts:

This course really does have a pretty nice ball golf type of feel to it. Rustic and yet manicured. The sign for the park kind of relays this info in a way. A very nice, and colorful sign; and yet, using natural stone....i.e. rustic and yet manicured....

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun, open course in a great athletic complex.
- Course is mostly open. Biggest obstacle on course is trees, with baskets/tees/fairways strategically aligned to create challenging shots. Course is mostly flat; although, it's nice 2 of the 3 (slightly) downhill tee shots are on longer holes. Thick brush & creek come in to play for several holes (#2, 3, 17 & 18), as well as mandos on several holes, which is both a good and bad thing.
- There are some really good holes on the course. #17 long for me stands out as the course's signature hole. 537 ft dogleg left, with the creek/brush hugging the right side of the fairway the entire length of the hole. There's a perfectly placed mando, keeping players from cutting the corner. Basket is protected by several trees, forcing players to make 2 good throws to get within putting range. The other holes that play near the basket are also good.
- Course is not overly difficult, but it does require definite shot-making to score low, especially from the long tees. Short tees are going to present plenty of birdie chances.
- Course is definitely beginner-friendly. Lack of obstacles, length (from short tees) will appeal to newbies.
- Great amenities and aesthetics. Very nice, clean park. Even though majority of holes run along road, plenty of nature feel around you. Park, as a whole, has anything and everything you'd want. Along the DG portion of the park, you'll come across restrooms, large picnic shelters, and a walking trail.

Cons:

Only a few issues, but they all make a real impact on the course.
- A real lack of variety for the holes. I don't mind the course being relatively wide open when compared to most of the wooded courses in the region. It's a nice change of pace. The issue is that too many of the holes are straight. There are very few doglegs. As mentioned, course uses its limited elevation as good as possible.
- Course overuses, or misuses, the mandos. There are 2 double mandos in a 3 hole stretch (#9 & 11). Mandos can be used in a better way, such as creating doglegs, which is used to perfection on #17 long. Instead of using the mandos for more straight shot, they could have been used to create/force several more doglegs, leading to more variety.
- Course needs teepads and tee signs. Dirt tee pads are in good condition on most holes, but they're uneven on enough, that's it's noticeable. On most holes, multiple baskets are visible, so tee signs would fix the problem. On one hole I threw to the wrong basket because two baskets were visible, about the same distance away from the tee pad.
- The grass/rough is too tall. The grass has been cut short on some holes to create fairways. Other holes, it hasn't been cut at all, meaning these "fairways" have grass the same height as the rough on other holes. On some holes, the grass is tall enough that you're spending extra time searching for discs, not being able to see them until you come upon them.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great, change of pace course for those looking for a break from all the wooded courses. It still presents enough challenges that you won't feel like you're wasting your time.
- If the course improves any of the problems listed above (tee pads, signs, tall grass, etc), it'll be even better. A positive aspect of not having teepads is that there's opportunity for some holes to be moved/changed with it being a major problem.
- There are a couple holes that you can empty the bag to practice throwing drives - #1, 6 & 8.
- The short tee pads will probably be too easy for advanced players, but perfect for beginners. I played the longs and had enough birdie chances and scramble to save par holes that I felt it was a great mix.
- Anyone driving down I-40 should make a stop here. It's also close enough to Charlotte, Asheville and the Triad to make the trip. Playing this course and Glenn Hilton in Hickory 30 minutes away would make for a great 1-2 punch for a DG outing.

Beautiful Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Clean, new park with large gazebos. Air conditioned restrooms with running water. Large parking lot. Nice new tee signs on red course placed out of the way of the tee pad. Brand new Innova DisCatchers. Easy walk with intuitive basket/tee box placement. There are many 'mando's to break up the repetition. The tee box markers are angled correctly towards the target on all holes. This makes it easy to spot the pin. A course map is handy but not totally necessary.

Cons:

Grass/dirt tee pads. Tee signs on the blue course are a little weak compared to the red (hand-written cards stapled to a post). Course layout has many similar looking shots. Not much elevation change. Need benches & trash cans (although I didn't see a lot of litter). There seem to be a lot of 'mando' gaps to hit. But no 'drop zone' area for the shot if you miss the mando. Re-tee? On hole #2 there is a small creek with thick shule directly behind the basket. Dont throw too long! #17 blue is a par 3. This hole is marked at 537'. It should be a par 4 as it is very difficult to get to the basket in one throw from the tee pad. Blue tee pads throw over the red pads on some holes.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice course with relatively easy navigation. The layout is about as good as it could be, given the available land & location. The walkways surrounding the course give a lot of exposure to non-golfers. My favorite hole: #8

Brand, Brand New. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Note: Since this is the first review, I am going to go off. Sorry.

Pros:
- New, New, New. The whole park is brand new... the entrance signs, wood fences, picnic structures, bathrooms (extremely clean), everything... including the DISCatchers which still had the plastic wrap on the top links of the chains.
- 2 Looks. Half of the holes at Catawba Meadows have two sets of tee-pads: red and blue (am or pro) and this provides for two different experiences in one location... with the blues being much longer in general.
- Good Shots. Harold Duvall did all he could with what he had and designed some really great stuff... taking advantage of the limited elevation available, the trees, and the disc eating brush on holes 2,3,17,18. Bring your bag, I had to throw hyzers, anhyzers, flicks, skips, a two-finger roller, putters, mids, big drivers, etc...
- Open-ish Wooded. The course plays through an open grass field sporadically studded with large pines. Every hole is influenced by trees, but never to the point of being unfair. The gaps require accuracy, but are large enough to let you throw big.
- Mandos Add Challenge. At least 8 holes had double mandatories marked by orange flagging tape... tightening up some open holes.
- Exposure. The course is along a "major" road and has a high exposure to passers-by. There is also a bike/walking trail that flanks the course and many of the passers-by seemed interested in the game.

Cons:

- Grass Tee's. When being asked to throw 400+' bombs off the tee, it's nice to have an actual tee. Large concrete tees please.
- Uneven Tees. When asked to throw 400+' bombs off the tee, it's nice to have a level surface to throw from. Level, large concrete tees please.
- Primitive Signage. The tee-signs were nice; however, since the money was going to be spent... a better tee-sign could have been designed. It would be nice to know if the orange tape on the tree was really a mandy or how far behind hole 2 the disc eating brush is, etc...
- Repetitive. Although the course has varying lengths of shots ranging from 175 to 600+', and varying doglegs, tunnel sizes, low ceiling, open bombs... the course feels repetitive. Everything looks and feels the same.

Other Thoughts:

- Going to Get Better. This course went in the ground in October 2009. If the rest of the park is an indicator, this course is going to get better. A local mentioned that concrete tees are in the works and there is the possibility of a gold layout too.
- My Score: Reds -7, Blues -3
