Pros:
In this case the blues are a good thing. The blue Prodigy baskets are cool and relaxed, similar to the vibe of the East course at Cedar Creek. It is mostly pretty tame, but there are moments of increased intensity that are fun and interesting.
The early holes are in the grassy area around the parking lot, and the middle part is on the hillsides and low areas nearer to the water before wrapping up with two more holes up top.
I liked a couple of the flat and lightly wooded holes at the beginning. They kind of give you a warm up and can work out different kinds of throws. Shot shaping will be different from hole to hole and distances are not long.
Toward the end of the front nine, the course moves down the hill into the woods. There are fun shots that play with the big elevation changes on the fairly steep slopes. In the bottom flats streams and the lake will be in play as you send your disc between trees that are densely packed in places.
At the end of the round you finish with a couple of holes moving back to the parking area. A walking path cuts into the ground leading to the water, and one of the late holes you will throw a drive over the top of it. A short throw into a narrow, woodsy pocket is one last birdie chance.
The concrete tees were well done. The Prodigy targets are also nice, and the East course has blue rims on the baskets. Fairways are different throughout and use of the land is good.
Hole 5 was a nice little hole, flat and left to right out of the trees toward a large boulder that is sitting near the basket. I really liked one hole that played from top of the hill to the bottom, with the pin on the opposite side of the creek. Another one tees on the side of the hill, across the slope through the trees, to a basket that is slightly downhill. There is one hole in the flat bottoms that tees over and next to multiple bends in the creek, through a good line through the trees, to a pin location in front of the lake shore. Also a fun uphill drive that is a tricky but makable shot.
The park is clean, and there are restrooms and trash receptacles by the parking lot. There is also a practice basket with a green rim. The park also has two other 18 hole courses that are very good.
Cons:
Layout has changed, and linked map is out of date. The map posted on the bathroom door is updated. There are old tees that are no longer in use, and signs are not always accurate or present.
I played 18 holes, but I didn't get them all in the right order. I did have to look around for the next tee at a couple of points along the way.
Wet ground looked to be very slick and if it were slightly more wet would have been treacherous at times.
Other Thoughts:
I played the East course early in the morning, teeing of a little after 8 AM. Dewey grass had my shoes and socks soaked well before the end of the front nine. It was expected, and I didn't let it stop me from enjoying this very fun course, or the West course.
It isn't super difficult, but it takes a lot of good shots to play par golf here. Distances are not long and many pins are reachable for a birdie try if you can keep your tee shots out of the tree limbs. I shot a 59, and did not have a lot of deuces. There maybe some par 4 holes here, but I don't think it should be very many.
I liked the new layout, hopefully tee signs are brought up to date soon to make navigation a little easier. Wish I could give more detailed descriptions hole by hole, but the sequence is hard to remember and photos for this course are limited.
If I had brought cold drinks and a snack, I would have stayed and played the newly finished Central course as well. The local players were finishing up one more work day in preparation for a tournament the following weekend. Chainsaws were running in the distance. I did see a couple of holes, and it looked like my kind of course. Major elevation changes and heavy woods. Wish I could have been the first to review it.
Since I was tired from driving all night and playing the original two courses I decided to cool my heels while driving to another course south of the state line in Iowa. I would recommend a trip to play any or all of these courses, as they're totally worth it. Bring some supplies because they are kind of physically demanding.
