About what you'd probably expect

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Maintenance 8/10 - Tee signs are still in good condition. Grass was a little high but fine.

Discfinding 8/10 - Most holes have no way you could lose a disc. There is some thick stuff on the right side of the first 2 holes, and a chance to throw over a fence into someone's backyard on hole 3 if you grip lock it.

Variety of Distances 7/10 - For what this course is, it does provide a decent variety in distance. There is a hole over 400', three holes around 300, five in the 190-230', and one under 150'

Condition of Baskets/Tees 5/10 - Baskets are fairly new Mach 2's. There really aren't tees, there are just tee signs that give you a general idea of where to tee off. Course doesn't get enough play to have the grass worn down.

Use of Obstacles 5/10 - There is at least an effort made to incorporate what few obstacles there are on this course. I think they could have been used better to make a few more holes interesting, but this course easily could have been 9 wide open holes and instead it's 5.

Cons:

Alternate Hole Positions 0/10 - None

Elevation 1/10 - Like many central KS courses, there are only very minimal elevation changes, doesn't really affect any shots except for making hole 2 play a bit longer and holes 6 and 9 a bit shorter.

Decisionmaking 1/10 - The only hole that makes you think about your shot at all is hole 5, a slight uphill with a sharp dogleg right through the only treed area on the course. The dogleg is really too sharp to get an airshot far enough right unless you play a big skip, so you're between that or a cut roller.

Navigation 2/10 - For how nice the tee signs look, I gotta say they were about as unhelpful as any I've seen. They DO show distances which seem fairly accurate. Even still, not having tees means you really don't know what direction you're supposed to throw, and the holes that do have obstacles don't really show them well enough to be able to tell what you're looking at. I threw to the wrong basket 3 different times (Hole 1 looks like it plays to basket 7, and the tee sign shows pretty much a straight shot, but it's actually a big dogleg, Hole 4 could easily play to basket 8, Hole 8 could easily play to basket 9). The baskets don't have numbers on them indicating which hole they are for, so your best chance is to find the next tee sign to figure it out. The next tee is generally fairly close to the previous basket.

Variety of Openness 2/10 - Hole 5 is really the only one that has an obstacle in play within 100' of the tee. You do need to make sure you don't cut the corner too tight on hole 1 I guess.

Variety of Shot Paths 2/10 - Holes 1 and 5 are sharp left to right. Holes 2 and 4 are slight left to right. Everything else you could throw just about any shot you want to.

Comfort Level 2/10 - Not many obstacles means not much shade on a hot summer day. No benches or restrooms anywhere on the course. A lot of holes play very close to one another, so if it were crowded (which it never will be) you'd have to worry about hitting other groups.

Challenging all Levels 2/10 - The only people who will enjoy this course are beginners that are first learning the game (which to be fair is probably what this course is for, being on church property). Since there are at least some obstacles it wouldn't be the worst course to learn on.

Other Thoughts:

Overall challenge: 2/10
More exact rating: 1.385

Not much to see here. The course is definitely closer to a 1.0 than a 2.0, installing tees would be nice and would even help a lot with navigation and make this course a more solid 1.5.

Don't bother unless you're just trying to bag courses or maybe if you're teaching someone who's never played before. This course is 5 minutes from my office and I won't be back.
