Pros:
Charleston Southern has had a course in the ground for years. At some point, the old one was pulled and this one was put in.
- Another AcePlace course. A relatively simple layout. Eight of nine holes are essentially straight shots. Only on #3 does one have a blind tee shot. In other words, if you can throw up to 250 feet and straight, you'll see lots of birdie chances here.
- There's some nice Lowcountry scenery. Holes #2 & 6 throw over water; #5 & 9 tee off next to water. With the trees and flat terrain, you know exactly where you are.
- AcePlace course = relatively short course. That said, this had several longer holes by AcePlace standards, with #4 at 250 feet and #7 at 228. Granted, I was also playing in steady rain and wind, which affected how holes played.
- Generally, a good course for beginners/casuals. Throw right on #2 and left on #6, and you take water out of play. Other than those two holes, let beginners go crazy.
- Trees are the obstacles here. From #5 to 9, anywhere from a single tree to several trees come into play. Trees create some low ceilings. Not that you shouldn't be seeing birdie putts.
- Other than #2, baskets were fine. See more about #2 below.
Cons:
Course was a work in progress as of Thanksgiving '23. You want proof? The pieces for a permanent basket on #2 were lying on the ground all around the current temp basket.
- Discs in the ground marked the tee on #1, after that, I was relying 100% on the UDisc interactive map.
- This layout is a step down from the original Buccaneer Bay course. It happened for whatever reason. Less room for a course = sacrificing something.
- I wish the pond came into play more than it does. You barely throw over it on #2. 169 foot hole throwing over the corner of the pond, if at all. The most obvious locale would be to move #2's tee so you're throwing over the entire pond. Another option would be on #9 and make the walk around the pond.
- Zero amenities on the course.
- Now the mandatory disclaimer: per the notices, this course is for CSU students and staff only. An ID is required. Now the reality: I played the day before Thanksgiving. I walked right by a security officer. He didn't say anything. The morale of the story: play at your own risk. Figure out parking and permits on your own.
Other Thoughts:
It's another course in Charleston. It's close to Wannamaker. It's there to play.
- Charleston is starting to amass a quantity of courses. Unfortunately, the area is still lacking quality in its course scene.
- The pictures I uploaded on the site give you everything you need to know about the course. When your blind tee shot is due to the basket hidden behind a storage shed, you're stretching for challenges.
- It's good for a quick round if you're a student at CSU. If you're a bagger, a quick round is what you want here so that you're not drawing attention to yourself.
- Hole #6 is the best hole on the course, and I don't think there's a close second best. #5's tee has a gorgeous backdrop. #7 has a cool view of the basket from the tee. #9 is ok teeing off next to the water.
- Compared to other former, and current, courses in Charleston, this is bringing up the rear. With every basket left where it is, a simple, overlapping safari course could be much better.
- The good news for baggers is that once you pull out of the school, you're getting on the interstate in 30 seconds.
