The course that time forgot, if it even knew it.

Pros:

Colby high school has a disc golf course. It has been here for at least 5 years I'd assume, flying under the radar for it's entire existence. I had noticed a single green and yellow colored basket from Hwy 13 since before Covid. I never followed up on it, but it was eating at me. I finally decided to look into yesterday, and lo and behold, there's a legit course here.

The baskets are pretty solid actually. Not sure what brand or make they are. But they catch good and stand out pretty well in the dense woods. The yellow/green combo looks nice and matches the school's colors. One pin position per hole.

There are tee signs present at every hole except hole 7. Pretty basic but at least give you an intended tee area. They consist of the hole #, par, distance, sponsors and an ultra generic, obese directional arrow. Not the best, better than nothing.

The tees are natural. No issues with these really. They had recently regraded the trail thru the woods when I played so some were a bit spongy. Once settled it'll be a non issue.

The flow is pretty solid, starting and ending by the north end of the high school. Better than most school courses around here, or the state itself even.

Holes 1 and 9 are mostly open*, The rest play through tight wooded corridors.

Cons:

The rough here, at least in August, is horrendous. Thick brush, downed branches and brush lie just off the fairway on the majority of the course. I lost a disc on a sub 200' hole. Just, Poof!, gone.

Hole 9. I don't know if it was a sick joke or what. 450ish feet, playing back to the school. But over a corn field for the majority of it. Never seen anything like it.

Hole 1 plays over a playground. It makes you backtrack to get back to hole 2's tee, so just senseless design really. Shorten it by 120' and the flow would work better without the potential child beheading. Holes 1 and 9 are not done well, other than flow wise.

The mosquitoes here bring the business. They're all work and no play. Bring some bug spray. The worst I've seen around here, hands down.

The course plays around essentially "logging" trails as fairways for 7 of the 9 holes. Gets monotonous, and pretty quickly. Leaves you yearning for a wide open 9 baskets around a school deal.

The tee signs aren't holding up the greastest. The elements are taking their toll on them. Hole 7's sign is gone completely.

Other Thoughts:

This course would be a solid early spring, winter, late fall course. I'm guessing. I know for a fact that it's a pretty terrible mid summer course. One of the better designed school courses in WI I've played recently. In theory. In reality it's kind of a mess, lot of a mess.

It's literally right off of Hwy 29 so it'll be a quick bag. Again, in theory. Totally dependant on the time of year.

Destination course? Absolutely not. Worth a play? Maybe, depending on the time of year and your anger threshold. The basic infrastructure is there. The maintenance is not. It's a great design in theory and on paper. It's passable (barely), as it stands now.
