I Played A Frolf Course With Several Round Tee Pads! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Don't get me wrong here, I enjoyed the College of the Redwoods course. It obviously gets lots of play. I like the fact that whoever is in charge has stayed with original plan and hasn't added 12 alternate holes. I'm just not sure about calling it a frolph course. Isn't. This is California where DISC was invented, Isn't It? Frolph!

The course was easy to find as this college isn't much bigger than your average elementary school. The course begins at the end of the parking lot and the staging area is quite obvious with overflowing garbage cans, benches and tee sign. There are concrete tee pads and the tee signs have a colored pic. The baskets are old (like really old) DGA Mach II's.

# 1 is straight 254' shot to a basket tucked into trees. There seems to be seating at each hole. Most holes have both an A and a B position listed but there is no way of telling which position they're in today. And quite a few are not visible from the tee box.

Being the rookie course bagger that I am, I was somehow never able to find # 7 and I searched long and hard.

I have two favorite holes here. # 8 is a short but very clever throw down this trench/ditch with a couple low branches in your line. It's just unique!

I also liked # 12 a lot. It's about 205' with you teeing off from a raised pad. The basket is tucked into some Cyprus trees on a little hilltop just across the way.

I liked # 13 for the simple fact that they have taken a simple little sub 200' open hole and made it an island hole. That's an easy way to add challenge and pizazz to an otherwise bland hole.

Cons:

Navigation was a little tricky. I never found the # 7 tee pad.

Frolf Course?

Baskets are a little on the ancient side.

I always that round tee pads are a big waste of money, unless they're used for multiple holes.

Someone could publish a course map.

Other Thoughts:

One can tell that this little course gets a lot of play and has, for quite some time. I can see why. It's just an enjoyable little course. Nothing special, mind you. A couple of cool holes and a bunch of decent ones. I enjoyed my round here and wouldn't mind having this as my home course.

Fun and quick 2+ years

Pros:

Located off Hwy 1, it is very easy to find and minutes from hotels in Fort Bragg and downtown.
*Very friendly and helpful locals
*Usually someone at the course, but the layout is easy to follow, with signs at each tee
*Fairways were mowed and extensive use means shrubs and grass were not an issue
*Can play the regular 9 holes in 20 minutes, so multiple rounds are easy
*Not much chance of losing a disc
*Very clean and scenic
*People were enjoying beverages et al.

Cons:

There is a lot of space and the holes could be expanded and added to, making this a 12 or 18 hole course. Tees are dirt with lots of hard, small rocks that act like ball bearings, but plenty of space to tee off to the side.

I would have scored it higher but most of the holes are short. I shot 7 of 9 birdies at one point, but usually 4 or 5. So the challenge is to try to park every hole. They can all be birdied.

Other Thoughts:

Some very nice locals (Jeremy, Chris and Chris, Matthew et al.) showed my the Ice Bowl layout, which uses tone poles. These are white PVC and sprinkled throughout the course, and some holes are very fun.

Although I usually saw another player at the course, I think you could play the regular 9 then go safari for another 9 holes. Lots of potential.

A work in progress. 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Its a new course and in the growing sport of disc golf that is good. A real nice mix of shots. Each one very different from the last. There are signs for the tee pads and the flow of the course is just as a disc golf course should be. After you finish a hole the next tee is within sight. During the week you can use the college restrooms. Plenty of beautiful views. Dogs are welcomed, which could be a con in some peoples eyes. There is no charge to play or park.

Cons:

The grass was holding this course back from a better score. Now it is really knocked back.. Of course just having 9 holes is a con. Natural tees have been packed with gravel so it is better than mud. Not too many cons come to mind... Oh some trash in the brush on # 5 and it is kinda gross, lots better than it used to be, but still bad.

Other Thoughts:

I am super excited to watch this course grow into a great 18 hole disc golf course. There is a lot of work ahead, and also a lot of possibilities. Come out and enjoy.
