Clearly a lot of thought went into this one 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Tees are concrete, pretty thin, but I don't really care about that if I can fit on it, a couple holes have big concrete things that the tee is on (7+13) these are fine, but they seem a little less professional
-Nice tee signs, they are helpful for the different positions, although you would have to be a local to know where some of the pins are.
-Baskets are nice DISCatchers, highly visible, a couple Mach V that serve as alt. Pins I think, I didn't play to them but they looked solid enough.
-Fairways are nice, mostly short grass, with a couple dusty dirt ones.
-The rough is very rough, that being said, there isn't a whole lot of it, but it is easy to find.
-Good use of trees as obstacles
-the best holes with OB are #4 and #9, 4 is a cool island hole, that is reachable, but not a gimme. 9 is a fun river type OB.
-Columbia Park is a very nice park, it is super long and this which is interesting. So,thing that adds to the character of the course is driving to it through the waterfowl area, many geese fly across into the road, which is kind of fun.
-Basket placement is great, most notably on 4 and 5, 4 is up on a cool raised platform, and 5 is surrounded by skinny trees.

Cons:

-Navigation is very hard, with a map it isn't that bad, but I don't know what I would do without uDisc on this course. This is a small park for the two tees, two basket set up.
-Water doesn't come into play except for on hole 10, I wouldn't mention it if it wasn't such a strange use of a water hazard. It is a little pond type thing that looks to be very deep, but the top is duckweed so from the tee you don't know it is there. I would hazard a guess that many a disc has been left down in the muck.
-I think a couple hole could use a tree or two, maybe plant some saplings around hole 11 and 12, because these holes are wide open, and not quite long enough to be a good hole at that level of openess

Other Thoughts:

A worthy stop in Kennewick, I was only in town for about 3 hours, so I only had time for two courses, I'm glad I played this one, if I had to only play one, I would play two rivers, BUT, this one is a very close second.
3/4 on the new shoe index.

Great Watching Course Mature 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is in Columbia Park between the freeway and Columbia River. The river is much more prominent but neither affect play. Over the years there has been a very active local club that have done a good job of maintaining and improving the course.
Most holes have multiple pads and pins that are laid out so there is little chance of accidentally throw up on someone because you don't see them. I particularly appreciate that they have preserved the original layout(with the exception of hole 15) dating back the the late '80s as an option.
For a course with so many options signs are key and these are great! Clearly show all pads and pins and suggested pairings.
One recent improvement for more experienced players is added mandos on holes 3,11,12, and 18, none of them necessary for safety. I like this mechanic, easy for beginners to ignore while adding challenge for more advanced players.

Some holes of note:
3 Has added a mando between 2 trees about 100 ft from pin. Has long been unofficial mando, makes this a much tougher shot.

4 has grown in difficulty over the years. Island was added, then logs placed uptight around perimeter so it is harder to skip in, now the pin is raised to about 7 feet.

10 is slightly moved, now has a risk of shallow water if too much RHBH fade at end as well as OB path.

Cons:

7/8 has always been one of the major weaknesses of this course, as they share a fairway. My usual path to pin 7 plays very close and often over tee 8. Problematic if course is busy.
Could use next tee signs at 14 and 15 for those that don't know course, but trails are obvious as it is a mature course so not too difficult to sort out if at all experienced.
The trees are too trimmed. This may seem an odd con, but one of the areas where this course has always presented challenge we the Russian olive trees, a very bushy tree with big thorns and branches clear to the ground. You REALLY didn't want to put a disc in one so some lines were limited and a bad shot could be brutal. Now most of them are trimmed up to 7 ft so lines are way more open and forgiving. Makes the course 1-4 strokes easier.
No bathrooms close.

Other Thoughts:

This is the first dedicated course I played and learned on. It was my home course for a decade from 1988 to 1997 and I have played it at least a couple times a year ever since. My wife and I were members 6 and 7 of the local club and helped with many of the early transitions from tone poles and dirt pads to baskets and concrete tees. This course will always hold a special place in my heart and I am SO glad to see that the local club is not only improving it but retaining it's history as it is one of the older courses in Washington to be in continuous use.
I really wanted to give this one a 4.5, but is realistically only a 4 at best. Still one of my favorite courses. It really is a great example of what a dedicated club can do when working with good park management.

Good (if short) course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Most holes have multiple tees and/or baskets
+ All but one hole had well made tee signs showing lengths from various tees to various baskets, including directions to the next tee (would be easy to get lost without those)
+ Many holes are clear, would be hard to lose discs
+ Decent shot variety with some lefty hyzers, an island green, some righty turnovers, short hyzers and elevation changes

Cons:

- Despite good variety for a Par 3 course, it lacks the Par 4s and 5s of a championship level course
- Some layouts were effectively repeated; a <300ft flat/hyzer down a wide fairway will net you birdies on 4+ holes
- Unusually thin teepads, a couple of which are large, uneven concrete slabs.
- A couple holes have you throw parallel to the fence/freeway, take care not to grip lock or flip your disc

Other Thoughts:

Now having played both, I'm a more partial to Two Rivers in Finley because it has a bit more hole variety (especially in length). Still, Columbia Park almost makes up for it by having multiple teepads and baskets--if you're going to play 18-21 holes, play Two Rivers. If you're going to play 36 holes, play Columbia Park.

Good Local Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good for beginners, without being wide open and too short.

Locals for the most part seem inviting and friendly.

With the exception of hole(s) 14-15, the flow is pretty good.

Cons:

Vandals destroyed all but a few signs.

Tee pads are nice, but potential hazards if you get to the edge/ fall off.

Other Thoughts:

I am pretty certain the only maintenance that happens here is by dedicated locals. This place seems to be "forgotten" by the city/county. From what I understand, there is no possibility for any kind of improvement here due to "local natives' claiming some form of pre-ownership. Shame really, this course has great potential with some work.

Spring Break 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was an awesome course. I was just passing through Kennewick and stopped to play. After searching around for five minutes to find tee 2, the course picked up. The hole placements were extremely nice. When we got the feel of the course the awesomeness of the layout came alive. Hole 6 was very nice, and if played well is a great birdie hole. From 7-10 the holes are tight and are challenging but still doable. 14 was extreme. The elevation of the tee box is huge and drops to the hole. 15-18 are fairly simple, but the layout and design is very scenic. I play ball golf on occasion and this course was just as beautiful. Well done Columbia Park.

Cons:

The signage was ruined on quite a few holes making navigation hard. The map was adequate but could be simpler and easier to read. There were alternate basket placements with the baskets still in them, so knowing which hole we were throwing to was tough. But really not much to complain about.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice course. Will play it again at first chance I get. If you have a lot of time, play all alternates as well making the course 25+ holes. Great course!!!

Enjoying this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First off I'm new to the sport...
I like a lot of things about this course. There is wide open long baskets to work on your long game and there is baskets that have lots of trees to deal with. The two creeks make you work too on the few baskets that go by them. The wind that is in this area can be a killer to your game when it whips up. If you come in the summer the sun will put a beating on you so play in the early morning or late evening. Bring water!!! I'm getting better every game because of how this course pushes me.

Cons:

I'd agree that the city needs to put a little money into the course. Clean up a few things and paint arrows on the tees pointing out the hole that your going to throw at would be a huge help. Also a web page that you can down load a map would help out in a big way.

Other Thoughts:

Over all I'd highly recommend visitors playing this course. Fun and safe place to play yet you still have a feeling of being out in the sticks at times. Too bad that the photos only show a fall time of year. It is so much nicer looking then in the photos!
On #14 we use a "spotter" system. Due to how this basket is you have to throw through & above a tree line and 30ft above the fairway. Then dogleg to the right. Very easy to loose a disk in the heavy trees. So we put a man down range who spots where the other players discs go. Then the spotter gets to chuck his. One last thought.... There is no way that #5 can be a par 3. Wow what a ugly run to hit in 3 with a bunch of very large trees that all hang very low playing gate keeper to the final approach to the bucket. My best on #5 so far is 4 (it goes down hill fast from there and I don't want to talk about it)
One last comment from me. From what I understand (and I might be wrong here) the land is Crop of Engineers land. Given the huge court battle that was fought over "Kennewick Man" (who was discovered just a very short distance from the park) everyone is on pins and needles. Doing any improvements to the course is a very hard sell as the entire park is possible Native American burial ground. It is to the point that when the local club sets up a temp 18 hole course next door in the abandoned RV park they can't hammer in wooden stakes to mark tee's as they are not allowed to penetrate the ground. (At least that is what I was told)

Home Turf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multi pins and tees
Lots of tree hazards add skill to your game
good distance changes, and signature holes
Mixed shots off the tee... Straight pins, right and lefts
Elevations come into play
Fairways run preatty smooth
Lots of waste baskets
Water hazards are shallow and discs can be retrieved with a little dedication
Tournaments are held every couple of months

Cons:

A couple fairways are set too close, etc 7 and 8
No bathrooms
Summer creates some cheat grass
Waste Baskets need empted more often
Layout can be hard to figure out first time, but once played it can be played fast.
Old course, signs have fallen apart/missing

Other Thoughts:

I love playing this course over and over, it offers a challenge even after playing 50 times. You can mix and match pins and alt tee pads to change things up. I hear of plans to improve the grass and park overall. I have seen clean up beginning already. If you are a dg player and in the area you must try it out.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course sits about 50 feet from the Columbia River. River Country DGC sits in Columbia Park, which is a very large park with lots of other activities to be used in the park by all members of the family. The course has Alternate tees on 8 of the 18 holes to make for a longer layout. In addition 14/18 holes have alternate pin positions. On the walking paths and over are played as OB by locals to make the course play more difficult.

Cons:

Very crowded during certain times of the year. Most shots are working the disc right to left which is a natural hyzer for a righty. Not all holes are marked with tee signs and alt positions.

Other Thoughts:

Contact me if you would like to play a round this is my local course.
