Could be a 4 with some easy enhancements 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

A generally well maintained (with some odd exceptions listed below) course. A nice variety of holes, with various length, elevations, open vs wooded holes, FH vs BH. Two baskets make for good replayability and novice friendliness.

Cons:

Many baskets would benefit greatly from a high visibility band at the top so you could actually see them from the tee or approach.

Given the difficulty seeing the baskets from the tees unless you walk the hole first: the signs on some holes also don't help because they exaggerate dogleg angles and mislead players about basket positions.

Some holes have direction indicators to the next tee, but enough do not which makes it easy to get lost. Also a few signs on trails would help as well.

A decent number of otherwise good holes need one more pass with a chainsaw to clean out saplings that
make success a random crap shoot.

With a small amount of work most of the issues described here and by other reviewers could be
easily fixed. It's a shame that a course this good has small issues that prompted one of the novices in our party to state that they would rather not play the course again vs other better maintained courses in the area.

Good location but a Navigation Travesty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The holes are challenging and fun, even though I was the caboose of our foursome. Nicely cut fairways, challenging inclines and declines and it's hard to lose your plastic which is a definite plus if you're a novice or intermediate frolfer.

Cons:

The navigation is impossible. Faded signs at the tee's, if there are signs at all. The confusion can be very frustrating for everyone, stories of people leaving without playing the full 18 are circulating.

Other Thoughts:

We went on a lovely spring day, very minimal bug issues. Also, there was only one other group out there on a Saturday, which is very nice.

INTERESTING 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 31, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

DEFINETELY WELL PLANNED OUT. THE CHANGE IN ELEVATION AND THE CHANGE FROM OPEN FAIRWAYS TO WOODED FAIRWAYS IS INTERESTING. THE AREA IN WHICH THE COURSE IS SITUATED IN WILBRAHAM IS VERY NICE. ALL IN ALL A VERY PLAYABLE COURSE. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING THIS WEEKEND.

Cons:

YUP NAVIGATION IS DIFFICULT AT TIMES. BUT ONCE YOU KNOW THE COURSE IT IS MORE ENJOYABLE.

Other Thoughts:

I EMAILED THE PERSON THAT DESIGNED THE COURSE. HE DID EXPLAIN THAT HOLE 13 AND 14 ARE NOW COMBINED TO MAKE ONE HOLE, SO AVOID TEEING OFF ON THE 14TH TEE BOX WHICH IS STILL THERE. HOLE 14 IS NOW OVER A HUGH DITCH AND IS UNIQUE. GO AND CHECK THIS COURSE OUT, IT REALLY IS A NICE COURSE AND NICE AREA.

Crane Hill Nice Free Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Quiet, secluded course with well mowed, wide fairways. Nice baskets and partial signs.

Cons:

Mostly natural tee boxes tend to be either muddy or rocky. No sign at hole 4 causes major confusion. No scorecards or maps.

Other Thoughts:

A few open holes at the beginning and end but mostly in the woods. Pretty good variety but seemed like too many curved right. Not very hilly despite name(not nearly as much as Devens or Pyramids).
