Go early, go on a weekday

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course Infrastructure:

Every hole has solid, flat concrete tee pads that are more than adequate for X steps/runups. Tee signs show all of the multiple basket locations (A-D for most holes but up F on others) with a little wheel attached that is locked into which ever position the hole is currently configured, nice touch. Baskets are Mach 5 DGA's and all are in serviceable shape. Many tee pads are also accompanied by wooden benches with "disc chargers". A few next tee signs in tricky spaces help to navigate.

Variety of the course:

There are many different types of holes here and you will need many different skills in order to score well. Lots of variety in distance as the shortest hole here is just under 200 and the longest is just under 500. It ranges from mostly open to moderately treed and elevation comes into play on about 1/4 of the course. Although there are many right to left, left to right and straight lines it feels as though the RHBH hyzer lines have the best percentage of making a birdie on many holes. Depending on what position the baskets are in you could be playing a very different looking course than you did last time you were here. This course even has the river coming into play on a few holes and has easy routes to avoid this as well so you get to pick just how aggressive you want to be which is nice.

Cons:

Danger:

Being that this course was established in 1982 I'm guessing tee pads being close to previous baskets and fairways as well as fairways slightly overlapping others wasn't a big deal as it is now. This course is now extremely popular and it feels like you have to have your head on a swivel in order to void being struck by someone's tee shot. I especially dislike the open holes up on the hill that are slightly boring and also share fairways. These could be shaved from the course in my opinion or just formed into one hole.

Navigation:

Some of the tee pads for the next holes are not obvious. They do have a few next tee signs as I mentioned but it can still be a bit confusing especially in the transition from playing numbered holes to playing lettered holes. Apparently with school in session three holes are taken out to make 18. Personally I don't care about the number of holes, if it has to go to 15 holes no big deal, we don't need make to make 3 extra bad, dangerous holes to hit the magic number. Since the course is so busy you can usually join a group or follow the group in front of you.

Some filler and magic number issues:

I think the course starts and ends week. Both starting and ending holes are open with not much else to them. Hole 1 at least is throwing downhill so it has that going for it. Many holes here are good but many are just filling in the number to make it to 18. I'm not sure how many rants I've had in the cons sections of my reviews about how the number of holes don't matter but the number of good holes do. There is maybe 9-10 good holes here and I feel like the course could have 13-15 good holes. I'd much rather have 13 good holes then have 9 good holes and 9 bad ones to "get a full round in".

It's also full of homeless camps and people doing drugs, and not necessarily the same people. I saw some families playing this course complete with 3-4 year old kids and I couldn't believe people were bringing kids to this park. I highly recommend NOT doing that as you know the bad stuff they're going to see and don't even know what else could go on here at any time.

Other Thoughts:

I got here at 9am on a Friday morning and encountered three groups waiting to tee off who were waiting on another group. I honestly thought I would have the course to myself that early in the morning but my round dragged on even after passing many groups I kept running into more groups. I woke late from my hotel and was planning on getting here around 7am but told myself it's fine, it's early no one will be around, boy was I wrong! No even going on or anything just a super busy course in SLC that is starved for more courses. Overall this was a good course to play even with all the flaws and I recommend playing here if you're in town to experience a fun, old course just don't try it on a weekend and perhaps get there before 9am.

The good, the bad, and the ugly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Adequate infrastructure: tee pads are concrete, baskets are functional, and tee signs are accurate and informative.
-12 out of the 21 holes are a lot of fun. 1 through 6 are all well designed, mostly wooded, and just a blast to play. Great way to open a round. Holes 9 through 13 are also a lot of fun. The woods get a little more sparse through this stretch, but this is still a good run of holes. And then Hole 14 is simply fantastic: a 300' straight shot that has to carry over the creek the whole time before hyzering out left at the end. Truly one of the more memorable holes I've played.
-The views! When not in the woods, you're able to soak in some beautiful panoramic views of the Wasatch Front.

Cons:

-Note that I said 12 of the 21 holes are a lot of fun, which begs the question...what about the other 9? Well, Holes A, B, and C are adjacent to a school and not playable during school hours. But even on a Saturday morning they're pretty average. All three are wide open shots, where the only challenge is the extreme side slope that the baskets are placed on. Then the final six holes (15, 15A, 16, 17, 18, and 18A) are all vanilla with very little foliage and mostly flat.
-This isn't a course I'd be comfortable taking kids to. There was a small homeless village at the shelter by Hole 1, complete with a large topless woman riding a bicycle. Marijuana use was noticeable on the course, as well.
-VERY busy course. The parking lot was full by 10am, despite the fact that the temperature was still below freezing at that point.

Other Thoughts:

Creekside is a complete mixed bag. Great holes, bland holes, and everything in between. It's worth the time to play a round if you're in town, but a reasonable drive on I-15 North to The Fort or South to Art Dye will reward you with a more enjoyable round of golf.

Nice Taste of UT Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice city park course that plays through some nice wooded areas, a little bit of elevation and the creek for which it is named.

It's got many different pin locations and some really interesting lines. The pads are older concrete pads and they are in mostly decent repair though not overly large.

Baskets, which I'm told a few of move daily are older, but balanced and in good repair. They even have two elongated poles to create an elevated basket.

The signs are fairly good but there are so many placements if you can't see the basket it isn't 100% easy to drive. There is also a little wheel with the pin placements to let you know which placement it is in.

It was very crowded on a weeknight and seems very popular.

The view of the surrounding mountains is also quite beautiful and the benches on every hole give you a good place to look at them.

Cons:

There are a lot of spots where it's hard to see the pin and you might go long or not hyzer the disc enough.

There are also a lot of places where there are pads part way down the fairway or there are just some largely unsafe spots.

There are also a lot of wet spots around the pads so that you can't go long or you get wet.

Other Thoughts:

Really nice overall course that I would play again. Wish it was a bit less crowded, but you don't see tons of people at bad courses.

Very good park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great city park setting
- Just look around you: mountains!
- Good mix of shots required
- Nice use of creek - it's not on the early holes, so it sort "sneaks in" to the hazards at various times during the round.
-9 and 10 are a really nice pair of short holes that are nonetheless challenging - and they sort require "mirror" shots of one another. It's unfortunate that they cross over one another so they slow the play if it's busy. But if it's not busy, you'll really enjoy this pair of holes.
- 16 is a gem. Risk/reward flirting with the creek.

Cons:

- I was really lucky to hook up with a local to guide me through the course. Multiple layouts (like when school is in session) and multiple pin placements really require familiarity with the course.

Other Thoughts:

- I was in the area on business, and planned my trip to include an extra half-day for disc golf. I'm really glad I chose Creekside: it has a very good mix of holes, and it's in a city park full of activity - so it added to my sense of "seeing Salt Lake City."

Potential 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great signage
Amazing views
Nice technical holes

Cons:

Poor layout, too many holes right on top of each other.
Crowded course

Other Thoughts:

This could be a great course. There are some very cool holes here but the layout needs to be reworked. I know the locals love it but it's time to tear it apart and draw it up again. There is plenty of room to make a great 18 hole course.

Fun, but Consistent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nicely wooded area.
The holes that use the hill and river add some variety to the course.
Nice signs, pads, and easy to traverse course.
Decent length.
Multiple pin locations and a unique tall basket.

Cons:

Other than the few hill/river holes, most of the other holes are essentially the same. The course also favors forehand throws strongly.
Some signs indicated the wrong tee positions.
The disc golf course can get very crowded and other players/pedestrians are not particularly courteous.

Other Thoughts:

The river is very hard to find discs in, so it's better to throw safe.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good Concrete Tee Pads
- Great Tee Signs That Look Brand New And Give you all the info you could need
- Multiple different basket placements on every hole
- Good variety of distances especially with all the different placements
- For a pretty classic "city park" course it has quite a few tight wooded shots that really make you shape lines

Cons:

- Baskets don't have numbers and some can be pretty close together depending on placement, making it very confusing sometimes with basket you are suppose to be throwing at
- More navigation signs are needed, there are multiple places on the course to get lost
- This course gets very crowded, I played at 8:15 on a Thursday morning and I had to play through 4 groups of 4-6 people. And tons more were on the course as I was finishing up around 9:30.
- Considering how busy this course is, and the close fairways, and the navigation issues, I feel there is a pretty high risk of injury on this course

Other Thoughts:

Fun city park course, but navigation can be frustrating. Be careful where you throw and watch out for discs.

Old classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Old classic course.
Lots of variety. Hills, woods, water, etc.
Alternate pin placements.

Cons:

Very crowded.
Cramped fairways.
A little difficult to navigate.

Other Thoughts:

Very popular spot for the locals. It seems like there is too much course crammed into a small area. Multiple pin placements and cramped fairways. Other players become as much of an obstacle as the trees.

Run down but still fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Solid, large Tee Pads. Just enough Technical challenge. Very well played-in, son few places left on the fringes for discs to hide.

Cons:

95% of all signage has been ripped out or vandalized, very hard course for a first-timer to figure their way around, lots of crossing patterns and overlaps to make that worse, crowded scene plus crowded course design.

Other Thoughts:

OK, so I get this course is an oldie, and that shows. Probably my biggest complaint since spending hours trying to navigate this thing the first couple times I played was just the overall crowded feel. That said though, the course is a fun mix of technical challenges and it's one of those short courses where there's a birdie available on just about ever hole for the better players with accuracy off the tee. A good 'locals' course for sure.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Strictly a DGC park with large parking lot, practice basket and restrooms next to first tee. Nice manicured fairways and some nice tunnel shots with elevation changes, blind pin placements and very little under brush. Great water hazards are present on several holes. Maintained and kept clean.

Cons:

Is crowded on the weekend and a surge of people usually arrives around lunch time (11:30) during the weekdays.
Navigation is challenging with no pin locators on tee signs.
Course layout can be dangerous or causes wait time on the tee pads while others reverse back up towards you or criss cross; like holes # 5&6, 7&8, 9&10
Erosion and course use is evident around most tee pads allowing water to puddle up and same goes for a few baskets.
Some tee pads are cracked or have cracked corners.

Other Thoughts:

When I first played this course as I mentioned navigating can be a challenge if nobody is around to help you out. With the lack of pin locators to show where the basket and the integrity of the tee signs being bland it was frustrating. I would see all the different pin placement options and the beautiful terrain in front of me but, didn't know where exactly to throw towards! The second time I played it was much more enjoyable and the locals are friendly and helpful I just happened to show up at dusk the first time I played.
The ground is hardened clay and may hurt your game near the creek or help as in a skip up to the basket.
I did play the course after a very wet stormy day and then again shortly after and realized that the puddles are a problem here and could be fixed up with some D1 or D2 gravel. One basket had a puddle of water that circled the entire basket from about 4 ft out; if you missed it was in the mud. Overall this is a fun course and would highly suggest if you are in the area this is a must play as its one of Utah's many fine courses!

Good - Too Crowded Though 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee positions, Concrete tee pads, a wide variety of options for playing shots (rollers, FH, etc).
They usually changes the pins often, while we were playing they changed the layout on us during our second round. Well maintained.

Cons:

Not very long, Very crowded, tight adjacent fairways, little or no "heads up" for incoming discs. Improvements to the tee signs would be helpful, some of them don't have the multiple pin positions or distances on them. Next tee signs would be helpful too. Lots of holes had similar shot layout (250-350) left to right shots. Would have liked to have seen more of a mix than a run of similar shots.

Other Thoughts:

It was a fun course, but could be played only FH (most players I saw there did), could be a +/- depending how you look at it. The course was just way to crowded, I was there on a tues at 11:00 AM and there were tons of people there and it tends to grow more crowded as the afternoon comes in.
The locals will help out though, with helping you find next tee, pins, etc. The map on tudg.org is somewhat helpful, but is still a little misleading.

Creekside in Holladay Utah 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The trees and the creek make for some tough approaches. On the day we went, the tee placement for some of the shots made birdies almost impossible, which we liked.

Cons:

The course criss-crosses in places and not all the pads are labeled so you might find yourself confused the first time through. There were plenty of locals the day we went so we just asked for directions and they were glad to guide us in the right direction.

Some of the criss-crosses meant that you had to wait for players on one teepad to throw before you could throw on your teepad.

The course is set up tight. "Fore" is yelled a lot because disks end up on other fairways and teepads often.

Other Thoughts:

The course is set up to be a challenging par 3 course but it seemed that the holes were too close together and there were a lot of players on the day that we went (which was a Thursday at 1:00 pm). Our second time through, we ended up behind a group of 8 that didn't offer to let the two of us play through.

We had a fun time and the course was challenging with all the low hanging branches.

creekside park slc utah 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 6, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes, well maintained by local club, mulitple pins placements. easy to get around course, caters to most disc golf levels.

Cons:

too crowded, very popular course. a little conflict with fairways, the course is squeezed into a fairly small area for eighteen holes. only one or two long shots to challenge the younger big-arm players if the pin placements are set up that way. dog walkers dont pick up poopy-poops.

Other Thoughts:

the course plays in an old water retention area so is a little limited in space, and sometimes flooding occurs in the spring, but this doesnt detract from the great course layout which is altered weekly by the local club. no crossing fairways but an errant shot will put you on another fairway very easily. the course itself plays more technical and will challenge you to put your drives where they need to be, hyzer and turnover shots are needed to do well here. lots of trees to plays through but ont overly. this course is the oldest course in utah and has lots of history. if you dont mind waiting for big groups to play at peak hours, it wont be a problem. it would get a better rating but there are too many people playing there nowadays and its a bit limited as to length.

10-13-08 TICKET ALERT!!! - If you are caught with alcohol in the park you will receive a $750 citation. This is an attempt to stop people drinking in the park. So heads up....
