Pros:
If I needed a reminder of how hilly portions of Winston-Salem are, Crossnore DGC was a great reminder. Elevation turned what should have otherwise been a mediocre layout into a surprisingly fun (mostly) pitch-n-putt.
- So much better than it had any right to be. Even the wide-open holes (#4 & 9) are fun thanks to big elevation drop-offs.
- For a short course, there are a lot of holes that you may be wanting to throw multiple discs. A lot of ace runs or a bad roll away down a hill will make you go back to the bag.
- A lot of strategically placed baskets. Holes behind trees (#2) close to trees/low hanging branches (#3, 5, 6) or on the edge of slopes (#3 and 8). Being hole high, but 30 feet to the right of #8's basket, I could either try making a run for the basket or lay up for an easy 3. With a big drop-off behind the basket, a missed putt meant I would be looking at a 60-footer uphill for par. And, the hole is only 189 feet.
- Throw in some old, historic buildings, you have a cool vibe this entire course. Rolling hills beyond #1 & 2, and the road below on the right side of #5 & 6 give additional cool views.
- Great course for casual players. There's a high fun factor here. There's also a high degree of luck involved giving it an extra challenge.
Cons:
Not the toughest of layouts. Advanced players won't notice the slopes, trees, or branches that come into play. Advanced players will be making a run at a score of 18.
- Depending on what else is going on here, some holes may not always be available.
- The description for the course says it's open for play when the gate is open. It doesn't specify what that means. I interpret that to mean there may be days someone expects it to be opened only to show up and see a locked gate.
- #1 is the worst hole. Simple and wide open. It's a dud to start the round.
- Parking lot is extremely small. Between the course and hiking trail, the lot could fill up fast on a weekend.
Other Thoughts:
For a short, simple layout, I enjoyed Crossnore. If you're saying make a fun 1900-foot course, Crossnore is one of the better layouts you'll find.
- Course can easily be played with only a disc or two. The two longest holes are the big downhillers, so they play considerably shorter than their listed distances.
- I enjoyed throwing around some of the ivy-covered trees. Another enjoyable visual.
- Baskets and tee signs are in good shape.
- Course was extremely easy to navigate. I created the map on UDisc so I was playing blindly. Wasn't an issue.
- This course scores high on the fun-factor scale; not so much on the challenge scale.
- Still, it's worth a play if you're in the area. Nice addition to this venue.
