Fly through before you fly out

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 23, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

As I found myself with a couple of hours before I had to fly out of Tampa and saw that this course and park on the bay was really close so I dropped in to try it.

It's a long course with several long and multi shot par 4s. It's fairly flat but has some nicely wooded holes and a pretty good variety for a course so flat. The course is lined by a mix of pine and palm trees and some of the shorter holes are fairly dense. On the longer holes it's more of a winding type shot, missing the big trees and attacking where you can.

The pads of which there are two on almost every hole are nice big concrete pads and the signs are quite good as well. Full color and accurate.

One hidden challenge was the wind, on the open holes you are close enough to the bay that it was ever present on the more open holes.

Don't rely on flippy discs here!

Cons:

The cons here are few design wise, mainly it's in a busy park with a walking path that crosses holes or next to them for many holes and your going to be waiting sometimes.

I don't love some of the pin placements, there seem to be a ton that want to force a backhand turnover shape and for some reason many are by low area where water collects badly.

The only other issue I had is almost no benches.

Other Thoughts:

Fun place for a round and I bet it's a popular spot. You also have a beach there so after the round if you want to chill for a bit it's not a bad spot.

Or if you have family with you it's something for the non discers to do.

Great variety!

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Tee pads - They recently poured short pads in addition to the long pads, good concrete with normal length

2. Variety and difficulty - Many different shots needed here for both leftys and rightys. Perfect mix of par 3s, 4s, 5s. Long pads are not pro level but for Ams, anything over -5 is very good. Short pads are still ~6000 ft and change some of the holes significantly.

3. Baskets - Nice baskets that catch well, never had an issue at this course. Practice basket by hole and parking

4. Land - Course itself is in a busy South Tampa park, many beachgoers, runner/walkers, and other parkgoers. You may encounter a few on the walking path but 90% of the course is in its own section of the park, only the walking trail is close to it. Super flat, but there is literally a bay "beach" at this park.

5. Nature - Almost always rabbits on hole 3, no other wildlife present besides birds/squirrels. Lots of trees on this course, mostly palms and generic FL fauna. Most of the course is shaded but holes 16-18 and #1 don't have as much shade.

I will put a description here for each hole from the long pads:

1. Par 4 that requires a straight to turnover shot for a RH (or FH) player, lefty backhand on the tee shot. The basket is in a 'cove' near a pocket of trees, this one is all about setting yourself up for an easy approach shot for the 3.

2. Short par 3 dead straight with a tunnel. Most will be throwing a putter here.

3. Par 3 straight to dogleg right shot. Basket has a few trees nearby but not truly guarded

4. Par 5, tunnel at the beginning but opens up fairly quickly, Hole 5s fairway is a common place to land but both holes are very close going opposite ways. There is a layer of trees to throw through on your 2nd/3rd shot to get to the basket. The basket used to be closer to the water behind the hole but they moved it about 50 ft left to where you should never be in the water.

5. Par 4 that is fairly straight but trees will have you throw a shot that needs to end straight, not go straight the whole time.
The basket is down a tunnel path which is not too hard to navigate. It is easy to end up to far left and have an overhand for your 2nd shot.

6. Straight par 3 shot but a bit lengthy for a putter for most people. There are dispersed trees in front of the basket but nothing too difficult.

7. Par 3 with an initial gap to hit that is a bit right of the teepad position. Trees!

8. Par 4 with an almost 90 degree dogleg left about 275 ft down the fairway. There are a ton of trees in front of the landing zone for shot #2, it opens up past that but the basket does have more trees near it, not guarded however.

9. Par 4 with a ton of trees, none are truly in the way until about 70 ft from the basket, players will have to shape a shot that goes straight and then left from the tee. The basket has quite a few trees near it. Also, there is a ditch near the basket that will hold water in the rainy season (Late spring/summer).

10. Extreme tunnel shot dead straight, par 3, putter hole

11. Par 3 with 2 lanes, one to the right and one to the left, technical woods hole. So many plays on this one. The road is close by this hole so it is possible to end up over there but would only happen with a massive shank.

12. Long par 3 that is fairly open til you get close to the basket

13. Recently modified, fairly straight shot but the basket is in a small clearing near a ton of trees.

14. Par 4 technical tee shot, tons of trees on the left of the fairway, players will have to throw and end left. Basket is in a clearing about 70 ft from the trees. This hole often has water behind the basket and sometimes the green itself will flood

15. Par 3 long tunnel shot, green is fairly open but getting there is hard

16. Long par 5 with a technical shot to begin and then very open after that

17. Par 4 that is open until a gap at the end that is not too hard to get to the basket

18. Par 4 that is a rip and grip hole off the tee, there is a grouping of trees on the left to navigate

Cons:

1. Mosquitos - The first time I ever played here on vacation I had to stop after 6 holes due to not having bug spray in the spring. DO NOT play here with out some type of mosquito repellent. There is stagnant water all over and the bay borders the park, there are barely any waves

2. Tee signs - The long pad signs are good but the short pad signs are not, at first they were laminated paper signs but almost all have been destroyed, knocked over or too wet to salvage

3. Some holes are a little to close to danger, 4 and 5's fairway is basically the same thing. Hole 11 it is possible to throw into the road and it is not easy to concentrate when there are constantly cars riding by

4. Park - Sometimes there are people who decide they are going to picnic or set up a hammock directly in the fairways. Also, homeless frequent this park sometimes, nothing crazy but they will be on benches sleeping or in the shade resting if you are uncomfortable with that

5. Parking - Asphalt or gravel parking is not that close to the course, you can park on the sand/grass/dirt close by the entrance but it is not ideal

Other Thoughts:

My current home course, I play here at least once a week

Cypress Park , A Little Of Everything 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cypress Point Disc Golf Course sits in a large park , but is primarily used for disc golf . There is a bathroom next to the large parking lot and a Port O Let near the end of hole 17 . Course designers Ken Climo and Patrick King must have received permission to use the park ,,,,,,, and they did . ALL OF IT . A large kiosk shows you the layout of the course . Make sure you either take a picture of this or print the online map . Some of the navigation can be tricky . There are extra long wood framed cement tee pads here , The signage is first rate with hole # length , par and flight path . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers and are in good shape . There are a few benches here . The course was clean when I was here , but the grass was a little long . The heavy rough that you see in other courses isn't as prevalent here . Disc Risk : Low , unless you throw high into the palm trees , overthrow hole #4 or have it disappear in the fairways of 16 or 17 . More about that in cons . The course design is solid , with holes ranging from the technical #3 at 198' to the bomber #16 at 825' . This course also boasts long defined fairways with a technical aspect to it like the par 4 14th, 490' with a tight line though the trees to a protected basket , or the par 4 566' #8 that forces you to either throw over a tall No Trespassing signed lot or take a 90 degree turn left early in the fairway to the basket almost at the end of the park . A good amount of par 4's and 5's on this course , and they will force you to work hard for birdies . Hole 1 puts the shock in your arm with a 570' open fairway drive to a basket set behind protected trees . The course is very flat but uses most of the trees in this park . I was here in unseasonably dry times and only saw water right behind the #4 basket , but I hear that the course gets soggy after a rain . Best to wear your waterproof shoes here . Signature hole : #4 for me . A long controlled driving 720' , the fairway forces you to throw left for your first couple of drives , then , with the protection of a couple of small hills it forces you to make a decision to throw into the hill and hope for an over the hill putt , or throw towards it . What you don't realize is the the back of the basket starts to slope down , and there is a pocket of water 8' away that will swallow your disc . You won't know it until it's too late . I was lucky enough to have hit the bucket or I would have lost my prized midrange . Because of the length of the course ( almost 8000' ) it is a slow play . I finished in over an hour , plan on a foursome well over 2 1/2 hours . I don't know about peak hours , but other than 2 players behind me a few holes back , I had the course to myself on a Wednesday afternoon .

Cons:

#1 The elements. The story goes that this course is so flat that there can be standing water in many fairways , especially in the back 9 . #2 bugs . Because of the water retention , the bugs are bad here . Spray yourself well before battling this course . The course already starts away from the parking lot , so it would be a long walk to go back to spray after the fact . #3 Course Care . Holes 16 and 17's fairways looked like they hadn't been cut in a long time . I was looking for my disc in both fairways in 11/ 2 to 2 feet of grass . When I was leaving , the only other 2 players on the course were looking for their discs in it . Other than that ,,,, Other thoughts . I was a little disappointed that Climo didn't make this more of a destination course . Nothing showed me , other than the distance , that this was a tournament style course . i tried to putt on the back 9 a couple of times , only to be harassed by the sound of a giant jet landing at the nearby airport . You almost get the impression that it is skipping off your back and landing right on the course . They can be close to deafening . Do I need to remind you how flat this course is ?

Other Thoughts:

Even though I thought I had expected a little more from a Climo designed course , I still walked away from here glad that I played it . A very long course that gives you some open shots , many technical throws , and a course that doesn't look like it ever gets overcrowded . Even a couple of picnic tables sit on the course for you to sit and relax . Good shot variety for such a flat course , and you really get to air out the last 3 holes . Too many pros outweigh the cons here . Not quite on the same level as Oldsmar , Picnic or Cliff , but still worthwhile . If on a layover or stuck in the airport for a few hours , this course is possibly within walking distance . Check out nearby Cigar City Brewing just east on Cypress St and left on Lois . I missed this important tip ( SH %&#@!! ) . My Recommendation : This course length will discourage and maybe demoralize newbies and your 2 disc junkies . Families would want to shy away from here , too . But with the length , it is a solid play for travelers to pros . My recommendation , if you have the time , PLAY IT !!

At Cypress Point, You Could Hit A Southwest Airlines Plane With A Overhand! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cypress Point DGC sits directly under the incoming flight path for Tampa's International Airport. The planes approaching seem so low you swear you could bring one down with a decent tomahawk. After one comes roaring in while you're lining up that important putt, you may feel like firing a disc at them.

The park is large, completely flat, sometimes open and other times dense with a palm tree forest. It was fun trying to thread your way through them. A creek comes into play on two holes where it lurks just a few feet beyond the basket. Today, standing water affected a few holes most noticeably # 16 but also 17 and 18.

The amenities here are very good with nice extra long concrete tee pads and great colored tee signs with map, distances from both the regular and the shorter amateur tees and the pars. The signs also has a narrative at the bottom with pertinent information concerning that hole such as a hidden creek just behind the hole. Very helpful, at times. Those pars are fairly important here with eight par 4's and two very legitimate par 5's ( # 4 at 702' and # 16 at 825'). The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow bands, numbers and a tall flag for visibility. # 3 has a next tee arrow but I didn't see any others and there were a few places where one would've helped navigation.

I didn't think there was one signature hole here. There are a lot of good holes but no great holes. It's pretty difficult to devise a truly signature hole on a course so flat and without any year around water or lakes although every review seems to mention the standing water on 16-17-18. Maybe it's always standing there waiting to grab your discs and force you to wade in. Fortunately, it did not look like alligator habitat to my untrained eyes.
Although lengthy in places, it's not a championship caliber course. It's probably challenging for advanced players. However, it was a pretty daunting round for a crummy old rec player such as myself. But even though Cypress Point handed me my lunch today, it was a very comfortable whipping that I received. The rough is quite forgiving and although annoying, the standing water was not scary. Probably your best chance of losing a disc here is to stick one high up in a grabby palm.

Cons:

The park is lovely and very cool and the palm forest was unique but the disc golf area is not quite stunningly beautiful like some courses.

The same goes for the Florida flatness. This is a excellent course design but once you've played a beautiful course with great elevation, a flat course like this just can't quite measure up, In my humble opinion.

A few more benches would be welcomed.

The ever present standing water adds to the challenge and would probably be fun to slop around in on a hot Florida day but I still believe it's a Con.

Amateur tees would also be welcomed by many of us weeny arms. I looked for on a couple of holes and didn't find a trace of an AM tee. Concrete AM pads would go a long way to making this course more attractive to many players.

No offense to the course but the wind blew the hell out a couple of my discs around today.

Other Thoughts:

I quite enjoyed myself today. I actually like a course with only one basket placement. Makes it much easier to navigate and relax when you're not always trying to figure out where the basket is today. Very few courses are as clearly signed as Picnic Island with their wonderful A-B-C indicators.

This is a nice throw for the big arms. Of the 21 Florida course's I've played in the Tampa area, I think this has been the most conducive to those who can drive 400'. This probably gives player the most challenging round, too. In spite of the distances, I think the average recreational player throwing a paltry 275' will enjoy his/her round here. I did!

Big boy Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 3, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

(3.566 Rating) RE-EVALUATED, Generally considered as one the better courses in the Tampa Bay area.
- UNIQUENESS - Although flat, the overall uniqueness is well above your average 18 hole course. There are a bunch of 4's and two par 5's. Several shots are blind. There's a placement dogleg left, pocket shots, windows shots, poke and hope shots, and moderate tunnel fairways. Perhaps one of the more unique aspects of Cypress is the use of palm lined fairways and palm gaps to split. There's only one water element in play, which is on number (4). Be very wary of throwing long on a shot to approach the basket. The water is lurking only 15 feet past the basket and the slope will roll any disk that lands on edge, right into it.
- CHALLENGING - Cypress was for a time the most challenging layout in town (now Sheffield) Many lower end advanced players will struggle to say at course par. If you like courses that test your skills, you'll probably love this course. IMO not quite as difficult as the DGCR rating indicates. As it falls right in the middle between heavily and moderately wooded. Thus its current listing under the heavily wooded moniker, will inflate its difficulty rating.
- SHOT SELECTION - I play about 60/40 flick to backhand on this course. 70% of the drives have to be well thought out and placed. While the other 30% will have to be bombed down the fairway. Many shots will also require a good deal of shot shaping.
- CHARACTER - There is a great course map near tee (1). There is also very well artistically illustrated and fairly accurate hole signage throughout the course. There are a few benches, picnic tables, and there's a practice basket. The tee pads are concrete, are of adequate length and width, and most are shaded well too. There is suppose to be two sets of tees at all the par 4's and 5's, but the shorts are not poured. I've only seen the am tees indicated right after a tourney and they were marked with orange flags. In addition to a need to add the second set of permanent tees, I would also like to see alternate basket placements and seating at all the holes.
- FORGIVENESS - The odds of losing a disc due to an errant shot is low with a few notable exceptions. The water on hole (4) and the palm canopy. Please be warned out of staters. Palms are disc-robbers. Don't throw high around them if you want to keep your disc. I personally have lost 2 disc in 3 rounds here in the palms. Both were returned thankfully.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - In my opinion, Cypress is well above average, but I still would place it behind a handful of other area courses (such as Picnic, Cliff, Taylor, Tocobaga and Medard)
- SPACING - Most holes are well spaced out. You may end up in adjacent fairway on (1,16,17,18) due to the open parallel fairways, but it's easy to see where everyone is in that area and I've never heard of or seen any close calls. Perhaps the one troublesome area to be aware of is on hole (8 and 9), where the fairways are partially shared.
- NAVIGATION - I didn't find any major issues first time thru. I took a picture of the map at hole (1). If you take a picture, you should have no issues. It's a solid map.
- CHILL AREAS - Holes (2) threw (15) all play threw a somewhat secluded wooded area. Definitely relaxing.
- LOCATION - The course is fairly quick to get to from the interstate. Less than 10 minutes if you get your directions right.

Cons:

I find no major complaints about Cypress (except climate related items) but ill add a few ticky tack things.
- MOSQUITOES - Wow! are they bad during the summer. They we so bad in July I left after hole (3) and I was covered in deet. Be very wary of trying to play during, or at the end, of the rainy season.
- STANDING WATER - In addition to the bugs. during the mid to late rainy season, the 4 open holes can/will flood. These are holes (1), (16),(17), (18).
- AIRPLANES - Cypress is located right along the path of landing planes at Tampa International Airport. Every time I play here, there are at least 5 or 6 times I have to pause to let the noise of a landing plane pass.
- TIME PLAY - Cypress is not a quick play. Plan to be here 3 hours or more for a group of 4 to complete 18 holes.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - This is not a beginners course. Although the odds of losing a disc is low, the course is way too tight to provide any enjoyment to inaccurate new throwers. I brought a 5 timer here and he shot over a 100.
- ELEVATION - Really none to speak of. I know that this is typically for Florida, but this course is flat for even Florida standards. No more than 10 feet elevation change throughout the entire course layout. There is a nice 10 foot mound on (4) near the current basket, perhaps a future alternate basket location.
- SIGNATURE HOLE - Lots of really good holes but no great hole. The par 5's do however add the thrill of an eagle opportunity.

Other Thoughts:

A great course for those living within 30 miles and beyond. Definitely worth a look see if you are from out of town and have already hit Picnic and Taylor and Cliff, or if you prefer longer courses. If you live in the Tampa Bay metro, be sure to play this course at least a few times.

long and technical without water hazards (mostly) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-great job fitting this long of a course into such a small space, but that leads to problems, see below

Cons:

-luckily, there wasn't too much standing water when I was there, but I can see that being a real big problem.
-if busy, I could imagine a few danger spots where people will basically be throwing towards each other
-#10 doesn't have a fairway through the palms
-would hate to go over the fence and have to walk that far to retrieve a disc

Other Thoughts:

this and cliff are about the same level of fun and difficulty for me, but here you have only one real water hazard

This Course Made My Friend Butthurt, Literally!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 17, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A somewhat scenic, pro player style, coastal Florida course.

The course zig-zags through a heavily wooded, grassy fairway, no rough to speak of, low lying area. A lot of the longer holes have open fairways, followed by well-guarded pin placements. There is a nice mix of short and long holes, but the course definitely leans to the longer side.

Nice concrete tee pads, sweet tee signs, and fresh Innova baskets.

Some interesting bumpy, rolling terrain features.

Cons:

The first thing that you will notice is the almost constant, extremely loud noise of airplanes coming in/out of the Tampa Int Airport.

There can be a lot of standing water (6-12" deep) on this course during the rainy season.

Other Thoughts:

This course is on its way to becoming one of the Tampa areas finest.

As of right now, I prefer Medard, Taylor, and Cliff in the Tampa area. I would also caution Rec/new players. The course is long and hard, and it could be tricky for new players to navigate.

Oh, how did my friend get butthurt? He was teeing off at hole 16, and we were running out of steam a little bit, and he sprained a glute trying to go large. "Dude, the Climo course made you butthurt!" Lol!

Tough (but fair) Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is set-up in a nice park. Holes are a mixture of open & woods (mostly Palm trees). Even though there is major length here, there are some Birdies to be had for Amateurs, & Intermediate players alike. There are Restrooms near the Beach area, which is not too far from the 1st tee. The flow of the course is good, and I did not get lost from hole to hole.Nice lay-out. Tee pads are cement & are just the right length. Baskets are new Disc Catchers. I like the par 66 set-up. Tough but fair.

Cons:

Okay. This did not bother me, but other players, maybe. Just above the 1st tee is the southern runway approach for Tampa airport. It's loud & often, so be prepared.(after #1, I really didn't notice the Jets until #16, 17, & 18) .The course is new and I won't be too critical of lack of signs, trash cans & benches. I'm sure most of these things will be addressed in the future. Bet this place gets "Buggy" during the rainy season. Bring th' Deet!

Other Thoughts:

Not having a big arm I thought this would be a punishing course to play, but it wasn't. The longer holes seemed to have nice "landing areas" to set up the next shot. The big open shots are #1, 16, 17 & 18. The fairways were a bit rough and unmowed, but the course is new. I'm sure this will change over time. The Back 9 (w/ the exception of 16, 17, & 18) weaves around a Palm tree forest w good sight lines. Nice mixture of Hyzer & Anhyzer throughout the course. It's just nice to have a new course to play in the T.B. area. Thanks to Ken Climo & Patrick King ( & all involved) for your work on this new DGC!! I'll be back, for sure.
