A Desert Course in the Trees 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great setting for a desert course along the Carson River
-Trees! Real trees for a desert course! Lots of cottonwoods
-22 holes with 22 baskets
-2 practice baskets
-Lots of shade for a NV course
-Bathrooms and trash cans on site
-Water can be in play

Cons:

-Old rubber tee pads in rough shape
-Old DGA baskets don't catch the best
-Basket position wasn't always recognized on tee sign
-Some tee signs missing
-Shorter course for the most part

Other Thoughts:

This was the first course in the Carson Valley area built nearly 10 years ago. There are definitely some signs of age but this course still holds up pretty well. It's fun, short course that plays through tons of old cottonwood trees along the Carson River. Once you're in the middle of the course you totally forget that you're playing in the desert. Lots of shade, and big trees with a river running along the course. Truly, a great setting.
About 25 minutes from Carson City, you roll into a gravel parking lot where the Hole #1 tee can be seen past two practice baskets. There's a covered gazebo type structure with some picnic benches along with a bathroom right near.
The first couple holes play along a field with some random obstacles that are natural but clearly put into place for the course. Then you get more into the thick of the course with trees and shade plentiful and tons of fun shots to be had. Water can come into play with some errant shots, but for the most part you don't have to worry. Most of the shots are shorter (less than 400') when I have played here, but there are some holes that have positions in much longer placements.
There's an extra 4 holes on the back 9 between 16 and 17 with permanent baskets. Nothing crazy exciting but adds a bit since most holes play a bit short.
I don't think there are any real standout holes for me. Just a very solid course that has seen better days. If they added new baskets, teepads, signs, and a couple longer pin positions this course could easily be a 4+. Between this course and Carson Ridge, it makes coming down to the valley from the lake not too shabby.

Pros:

- good quality baskets
- multiple basket placements
- good variety of distances ranging from 245 feet to 650 feet
- good variety of shots required to hit the lines, lots of mature cotton woods to make the course plenty technical
- practice basket
- tee signs with most of the info you need

Cons:

- the course is on a flood plain and can be flooded in the spring
- a couple of tee signs missing
- very Sandy course, many fairways are covered in sand
- navigation isn't super easy
- some holes had a placement marker but many did not

Other Thoughts:

With a some navigation signage and a tee sign upgrade, this could be a quality course. As long as it's not flooded.

Cottonwood Central 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cool course that winds through a thicket of old cottonwood trees. Nice practice area/basket right up front, next to some bathrooms. Tee pads were nice and theyve got signage for every hole. The first 3 holes switchback across an open field, with some deadfalls dragged in and fallen logs set upright for some obstacles in the open area. It seems that a tractor was used to pull in the logs and set them. Later in the course, a big dead tree was pulled upsidedown and planted along a hole, makles for a really neat visual. Hole #4 had a cool closely guarded pin, some logs and branches set up around it to bust your balls a little. The rest of the course goes deep into and around the cottonwoods. Fairly thick in some places, tee shots make or break some of the longer, denser holes. A couple holes play along the river, with pin placements close enough to the bank to make you think twice about ace running. No mandos, which I kinda like, lets you create your own attack. Good amount of distance mixed in with bird runs and an ace run or two as well at the pin locations I played.

Cons:

There was signage at each hole, but a lot of them were missing the indicator that shows which placement the pin is at currently. A few of the placements on the signs seemed a little off, which made for tough to find pins even when we knew where to look, but thats probably just a first-timer problem. Big con was the bugs. We played two rounds early afternoon in April, and by the second round, the insects were in full force. We really had to Zen out for 5 or 6 seconds to concentrate on our putts.

Other Thoughts:

I'll definately be back. A lot of alternate lines I'd like to try as twice through this course was not nearly enough to learn the best routes. I'd kinda like to see a little more of the logs and deadfall stuff on the field holes, as they are still wide open even with the few obstacles in place. Good stuff, for sure worth a play.
