- Cars come into play on a few holes and sometimes do get hit (Holes 5, 6, 7)
- Backyards and roofs come into play (Holes 5 and 6)
- Schoolkids on weekdays use the park during P.E. for Racquetball and Tennis (watch out on Holes 3 and 4)
- Tee and pin positions do not change
- Can sometimes be wet and muddy

The Deerfield course in Irvine recently underwent a design change (in 2009) and is now a full 9 hole course with baskets on every hole. The flow of the course now stealthily weaves around the volleyball courts and playground, instead of making these OB areas as was the case with the previous 18 hole layout.

It is apparently clear that this piece of land is more suited to a 9 hole layout - the flow of the course is much easier now, and makes for more elegant planning of angles and basket placements. The previous course had 1 hole that went directly through the volleyball area, and another one that went directly through the playground. Since this is a mixed use area, it was decided those angles were not appropriate. The result worked out better for everyone in the end.

Although a bit short in length, this is a challenge of a course and a great place to brush up on your mid range and putting game. Quite a few holes can be driven with just a mid range disc and a putter, and there are plenty of Ace opportunities to be had (although I haven't had one yet). Great lunchtime course - 9 holes can easily be played in 30 minutes or sometimes less.

This is one of my favorite courses to tune my game up at, and it is well maintained by the city of Irvine. There is plenty of opportunity for additional safari play as well, and I am listing my additional 6 Safari Holes below that seem to be the "most played". Some are even better than anything on the "Standard" course.



Standard Hole Breakdown:

Hole 1 - Between several trees with slight elevation change down then up. Pin Sits on a small hill in front of a large tree.

Hole 2 - Begs you to choose a line. Fairway is split by a large exotic tree with a thick Ash tree on the right and several smaller trees on the left. The basket is also hidden by a large palm with reaching branches. Some hyzer it, but the ash tree is thick with lots of branches and eats most shots

Hole 3 - Short RHBH hyzer behind some thick trees. Bonus: Tennis courts and racquetball courts act as a backstop and are only 8 feet behind the basket.

Hole 4 - Short RHBH hyzer with a few trees on the left. Great Ace opportunity. Don't go in a backyard here, the fence is at 250 ft.

Hole 5 - 2 Huge trees 60 feet from the tee eat most shots. If you make it through, a gradual hill goes up about 6 feet in elevation and the pin is at about 286 feet on an ever so slight hill. The putting circle with the numbered stones is on this hill.

Hole 6 - Slight elevation change down a hill, with several palms and other trees on the fairway. Great turnover shot with the basket on a well manicured slight hill in a sparse grove of palms.

Hole 7 - 2 Huge trees are 60 ft down the fairway on this hole. This one also begs you to choose a line - both Right and Left angles exist.

Hole 8 - Short one across an open meadow, with the basket protected by 3 huge trees. Good Ace opportunity.

Hole 9 - Wide open field shot that is about 280 - 300 ft. Big RHBH hyzer shot. This is really one to test your strength and accuracy.

Here's my additional 6 Safari holes that I have found to be the most popular:

Hole 3 alternate tee - The hill adjacent to the portables at the school, playing down to the basket

Hole 9 Alternate tee - The hill between the Rec Center and the final Exercise station (the horse) down to the # 9 basket.

Safari 3 - Lightpole that was "Old # 2 pin" next to the volleyball court, adjacent to the tee for # 4. Shoot over the volleyball court and to the # 1 basket. I am pretty sure this is the "Old Number 3".

Safari # 6 Long - From the # 6 tee to the # 7 Basket

Safari # 9 Long - From the # 8 tee to the # 9 Basket

Safari # 10 Long - From the # 9 Tee to the # 1 Basket

Update: Found another popular local alternate tee. On # 2 instead of teeing off from the sidewalk climb the hill directly behind the tee and trash can, next to the Balance beam. There is a worn spot of grass there underneath the hanging tree. Tee off from here and you get about 20' of elevation drop and 50' or so more out of the hole.

-Excellent rubber/sidewalk tees. Grippy when wet even.
-Nine nice DGA baskets, all in good shape, all accurately numbered in bold, bright orange numbers
-Very clean park setting
-Restrooms and drinking fountains on site
-Course flow is as logical as it gets. Very easy to find your way around.
-Strategic use of trees as a ceiling and as obstacles
-Accurate signs

-For golfers used to longer holes, this course will feel cramped. I do the whole course with an Aviar and a Core. Fun to play and will make your short and mid game better, but remember to leave the drivers at home.
-Some of the baskets are right on top of the following tee. Could be dangerous.
-A couple weird sign orientations. Looking at the signs, you have to spin around 180 degrees to look at the basket. I can't explain why, but it bothered me. :/

This neat little 9-holer in Irvine is a great place to work on your short game. The design centers around the trees, as there is very little elevation change. The designers couldn't have done a much better job with the piece of land.
Never many people there when I have played it and you can easily do the whole 9 in a half hour.
Great place to spend an afternoon golfing in the sun with many an ace opportunity!

Since it is a short course it is great too practice your midrange shots and work on accuracy. The park is a very nice with good facilities. As mentioned hole 5 has the pavers in a circle around the basket to practice your putting is a great idea!

I played in the middle of the day on a Monday and the park got busy when the school that is right next door let out for gym and the kids were using the walking path for a jogging track. I know it is a public park but just something to be aware of.

This course has a very relaxed feel and is a great little course. Since it has been redesigned all holes have nice baskets and tees or concrete path. I play here weekdays and weekends and crowds have never been a problem. Plenty of parking all around, safe to take the kids to the playgrounds within the park. This course has a lot of trees and they create many obstacles, but you shouldn't lose any discs on this course.

This course is short and when you go to a La Mirada type course, you realize you are not as good as you thought.

I found this course to be great for beginners that want an easy introduction to the sport.

Well designed and nicely maintained. Clearly marked and easy to navigate. Concrete tees. Enough obstacles to make it interesting and reasonably challenging. Free. Playgrounds, restrooms and other facilities. Nice variety of holes.

Short. Some tees are on the walkway. Park is well used by walkers/joggers/families.

I was pleasantly surprised by this little course. It has recently been redesigned and updated, and it shows. The park is small, but it makes great use of the available space. It's nice when disc golf can co-exist with other activities in a neighborhood park like this.

Good Park. It has all the basket already and layout already set. Also had paint on the walkpath tell you. Every holes has post by numbers and pars and picture of where target. Targets are easy to notice. Best useful is mid-range disc.

CAUTIONS!!! People include community with children whose guide by staffs around the park, and some layout too close to target ( if for d.golfer whose target out of bound would hit them). Head up!

It's cute place where you can enjoy having children play while you goes disc around the park. Mostly the courses are around the playground where children plays in middle of courses. There are 2 playground either place are good place. I would go there again with more family and friends include children. ( not meant the babies).

This course was pulled out due to somebody griping about discs flying too close to kids or something like that.

Now it's been reinstated, and here's what it's like.

Nine holes, groomed grass, some rubber tees (most just marked on concrete walkways), brand new DGA baskets, perimeter warning signs all over the place.

This is an exceptional practice course. The holes are all < 300 feet with a couple < 200. Some trees to negotiate, no elevation to speak of, a few buildings and other OB areas. Bring your midrange discs and work on your short game.

One "special feature" is a set of bricks embedded in the ground around the #5 basket, all at varying distances. You putt around the circle, working your way out to about 20'.

A few places where fairways cross walkways, so watch out for non-players, especially on hole #4 where people can appear from behind the tennis courts with no warning at all.

There's a community center of some sort there with restrooms and so forth. I only saw one person there but he was very helpful and friendly. Lots of signs around explaining the rules of the game - it looks like the community wants the course there after all

Um. they had one basket i think. Oh they had maps!

I didn't even play it a 2nd time. One and done.

we had a good time, just make sure you grab a map on the back of the main park building where you park. you can't miss it because the first tee is ten feet away from it. oh ya, and the tees are all painted on the ground except just go from the grass.
