Park Was A Beehive Of Activities! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

If nothing else, you have to say that the community gets out and enjoys Doris Davis Park. I arrived on a Wednesday afternoon around 4. The park and course were both jumping with activities. There was a rousing game of coed touch football. Groups were playing basketball. There were players on the ball fields. The playgrounds at the entrance had lots of elementary aged kids. The area around the 9th hole had a large contingent of people enjoying the park.

And the course had players all over, some practicing putting, players playing alternate layouts and the biggest, most boisterous group (probably 20) I've ever witnessed finishing a round.

The original 9 hole layout plays around the perimeter of the park. It's just a short recreational layout. Except for for # 9 which stretches for 540' across much of the park. Locals seem to have many different layouts that they play. No-one else played # 9 from that tee except me.

The course has simple signs that just state the hole #. The baskets are Innova Discatchers with the yellow bands. The numbers are on the inside pole. The tee pads are just natural worn spots.

I found theorginal 9 holes to be fairly mundane but really enjoyed a couple of the extra holes the locals played.

Cons:

I had to wait for locals to finish playing alternate holes before finishing mine. Not a big deal.
Natural tee pads were a little muddy and slick.
Park would be really crowded on weekends and busy times.
Original 9 hole layout not real challenging.

Other Thoughts:

It was really refreshing to see a course with all these players (Lots of Hispansic players). I've played so many courses lately where I've had the course all to my myself. Actually been kind of lonely.

I think Doris Davis is a situation where the local disc golf population has taken a regular little 9 hole course and made it a lot more enjoyable by creating a more creative, challenging alternative layout. It's definitely working guys!
