Great mixture 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are some field holes, water hazards, and trees. A decent variety of distances and two set of tees. When the rough grasses grow high the course can get a bit more difficult, but not impossible.

Cons:

It's easy to loose discs on the holes by the lake so this isn't a starter course. It can also be crowded but people are polite and helpful.

Other Thoughts:

I usually play the back 9 and have only played the hole course a few times. I park at hole 10 and hole 18 returns me to my car. The front 9 has a few holes near the lake so I skip those.
Sometimes a group has a tent set up and is selling some equipment and discs.

Very well maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The grass is manicured impeccably
The layout makes it easy to find the next hole
They don't force you to throw too far over the lake
Multiple concrete tee positions
There is a practice hole

Cons:

The back 9 is just a little too open

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course. This course is definitely the closeest in feel to a golf course that I've played on. That can be both good and bad. Its good in that its pretty, but its a little too open for disc golf. I feel like if they planted a few more strategic trees that would be great!

Country Club Feel 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

With two or more basket positions and two well-marked tees per hole, and built in an upscale park around a pond and some light woods for the front nine, and buffalo grass fields for the back nine, the Dr. James A Dillon disc golf course feels every inch like a ball golf country club. The one time I've played it, I even saw some local disc golfers out there using an electric golf cart. Felt like maybe I should go home and put on a polo shirt. Seriously, though, the course is beautiful, and well maintained. I met one of the guys who helps with this (Hi Matt! He's a dgcr member, too!) and he was positive, encouraging, and working even that day in November.

Hole distances range from 174 to 457 feet, with the short tees making for a fun casual round for the mid-level player, and the longs (and long basket positions) probably causing consternation amongst those of us below Advanced skill levels. Three of the holes put the pond nearby on the right, while there are a couple of creekside holes with woods to force a left to right approach, plus a couple more holes on the back nine with a surprise creek along the left rough, just off the fairway. So challenges range from water hazards, to light to moderate woods, to tall grasses just off the fairway in the summer months.

Excellent signage at the short tees (with bag hooks), baskets (including a full extra practice hole, fairway and all), trash baskets, benches, parking & shelter, and seasonal bathrooms all support the dedicated DG space, only sharing a little with a walking path that mostly borders the perimeter of half the course. The flow of the course is really nice, when playing long tees to long basket positions (leaving some walks from short to short, unfortunately, and there is a stroll from 9 to 10 on the other side of the pavilion shelter).

Cons:

One flow issue: from the fifth basket, you will need to walk back pretty much across the second green to reach the tees for hole 6.

The lack of elevation is a common malady for all central Indiana courses, so they've added just a few rolling knolls and sought opportunities to use the few feet of rise or fall that was available. There will be windy days on a course like this, which you might consider a con or a challenge, depending on your game. The guys with really big arms won't find much challenge from the short tees, and could even score really low on the longs, so I suspect the top Advanced, and particularly competitive Open players don't get to see much score separation here based on their skills.

For first timers who come to play the long tees: they don't have above ground signage (only at the shorts), but they have painted the hole distances in blue at the back of the tee pad.

Finally, the course is excellent as intended, but tends to be a little open, for its intermediate distances. Makes me wonder if they might consider future use of the woods beyond holes 7 & 8 someday to add a little more technical challenge.

Other Thoughts:

You'll encounter a sign at the first tee (as you look at the pondside basket) that cautions folks not to go in to retrieve your splashdown discs. They will fish them out for you, call on any info on the disc, and even ship yours to you for $1.85 (cheaper than I've found any way to mail 'em!).

Reviewer Background as of this writing: age 54 w/ 4 yrs experience, rated 900+/-, played 244+ courses in 23 states, 80% w/in 3hr drive of Cincinnati. Thrown with folks rated 600's to 1000's, ages 9 to 85 in events and leagues at all tiers. Seldom drive beyond 300-330, but have a solid up-shot and putting game. I haven't designed any courses, but try to lend a hand (with my severely desk-job limited skill set) when I can.

Fun Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Excellent baskets and tee pads
- Good signage and map
- Multiple tees and pin positions
- Bathrooms and water fountains
- Decent variety
- Well maintained grounds

Cons:

- Tee paint is faded, just needs another coat
- Hole 1 basket is on a hill fairly close to water, be careful
- Not many obstacles on back 9 (see below for more)

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course a few times this summer and I've enjoyed myself each time. Hole 1 basket is a little close to water for my liking. Front 9 are all shorter holes but have plenty of trees to offer a challenge. Back 9 has a variety of shorter and longer holes with young trees and buffalo grass. Wind definitely presents a challenge here; without wind the holes are fairly easy. The back 9 will continue to get better as the trees grow older and larger.

At this point I've only played the shorter AM tees due to a throwing arm injury but once I'm healed up I look forward to trying the pro tees out.

Course is definitely worth a trip to the north side of Indy. There are many nearby courses as well to get a full day of play in. Would absolutely recommend for beginners and intermediate players

Clean Neighborhood Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 1, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This park was and is still a great addition for disc golf in the Indy Area.

Baskets - 18 Innova Discatchers. Each hole has an A and B position that changes frequently. A practice hole (tee and basket) is also on site (see cons).

Signs - Signs are located at the AM tee for each hole. Includes detailed picture, length for both tees and both pin locations, par, and next hole sign.

Course map at the start of the course.

Tees - 2 concrete tees per hole. AM tees have corners painted red. Pro tees have corners painted blue and also lists the distance and the par (since the signs are at the AM tee locations)

Variety - 4 holes (3 without hole 1) surrounding a large pond, 4 holes bordering a creek, 3 holes that have plenty of trees as obstacles, one moderately wooded hole, the remaining holes are in the open with distinct fairways due to buffalo grass.

Water hazards! Not many courses in the area have water hazards. It changes things up a bit.

Trash cans and benches throughout the course.

Bathrooms and water fountain on site near holes 1 and 9.

Course is 2 separate loops. 1-9 is much more challenging than 10-18. 1-9 has more water hazards and trees as obstacles. 10-18 is beginner friendly with a few holes bordering a creek. Wind can be a major factor.

Course is aimed towards beginners and intermediate players.

Clean park.

Cons:

Hole 1 basket was removed for a large period of time. Comes close to a yard and the person did not like trespassing. It is back up!

Water hazards swallow discs. I have thrown a disc slightly into the water where it is visible. I got in to get it and got it, but the water made me smell pretty bad.

Paint on tees is faded. They could use a fresh coat.

Back 9 could use a few more trees to make it more challenging. It is very repetitive. I could be satisfied if I only played 1-9.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course. There is not much that can be done to improve it. 2 tees per hole and basket locations can change. There are great signs. It is a great course to use to introduce the sport to new players. It starts off challenging and ends with more simple holes.

If it is too easy, you could try the Hills or Hazel Landing. If it is too hard, stick to the back 9.

I would definitely recommend this course to any beginner or intermediate player looking to improve their game. There are several nearby courses as well so you could make a trip out of it.

Pros:

The concrete tee pads are excellent. For newer people like myself that are quickly picking the game up, Dillon is pretty good. Has some water, creek, and wooded shots. Decent alt locations and blue pads. Very good signage and easily found both tees. Good place for walking, very well taken care of course. Bathrooms are very clean. Pleasant place.

Cons:

Few trash cans that are spread out, but there are some there. It's a multi use park, but typically not in the way of disc golfers. The pond does eat discs, aim away if you can - if you go swimming, you'll be awfully stinky.

Other Thoughts:

Beginner-intermediate course, I find it very pleasant and my friends and I's usual stomping grounds. It's very well taken care of and now with the rain out, the grass is coming back nicely.

Fun Facility 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of features such as a lake, 2 creeks, and woods shots. On fours holes a large lake comes into play. On holes 3, 11, and 13 2 separate creeks come into play. There are mens and womens bathrooms with 2 water foutains on the course. There is a massive pavilion for tourneys and picnic gatherings. Every so often some guy sets up a tent and sells new and used discs. You can pay in cash or trade. The parking lot is big and the course is easily divided into a front and back nine, so if you want to play just 9, it is very easy. The park also has several walking trails and a skate park. There is a splash park and playground as well. A Mcdonalds sits just off of hole 3 for a mid round snack. The course is well marked and has red and blue concrete tee pads. There is at least 2 pin position on all holes and holes 5, 7, and 18 have 3. There is also a short practice hole which is great for warm ups and palyoffs.

Cons:

The main con to this course is the houses souronding it. Houses back up to holes Practice, 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 17, and 18. The people that live in these houses are major D bags, especially the house on hole 5. If you do throw a disc into one of their yards be very careful because they will call the cops. The lake has an act for swolloing up discs. The creeks eat up a few but you can usally get those back. A very busy road is just 50 feet behind hole 16, so overthrows could cause problems. New rookies to the game often go into the pond and steal your discs but they often do turn up at the tent set up by the man. You do have to pay 2 or 3 bucks to get your discs back from the tent man and the bathrooms are shut off October-March. The back nine is very open and boring. The walk from hole 2 to 3 is very trickey. (Continue past hole 2 and to the left slightly). From 5 to 6 go back towards hole 2. Hole 10 is past the bathrooms and off past the pavilion. The blue tee box for hole 7 is very tought to find and requires a large backtrack. (from hole 6 proceed back toward the top of the ridge which hole 2 sits on)

Other Thoughts:

The layout is trickey but after a few round im sure you will begin to love the course and it will become one of your favorites. There are monthly tourneys and doubles every tuesday night at Dillion park. The playground and splash park feature is good for the young kids and the tent offers a cheap way to get discs. The tent mans name is Denny (I think) but hes a sneaky fella so i couldnt say for sure. HAPPY HUCKING!

Yay! Lake!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great tee signs that provide a lot of information and they are all in very good shape
-Two tee pads and at least two pin locations for each hole (plus the tee pads are all marked with red or blue paint so you can play the easier red or the harder blue or a mix of the two).
-Very nice big tee pads that are in great shape
-The front nine are great with a decent variety. They include several holes in trees, four that play around the lake and a couple wider open holes.
-Water hazards (I love when courses have water hazards and this one has both a lake and a stream that could cause trouble if you over throw several of the holes. If you don't feel comfortable throwing over the lake there are ways to avoid throwing straight over the lake).
-The different tees and pin locations provide a good mix of distances on many of the holes.
-Enjoyed the last few holes that threw between and around some earthern mounds (which added a little variety to the back nine).
-Baskets are in great shape
-Tee signs have wooden blocks with the hole number on top which makes navigation easier

Cons:

-The back nine are not nearly as interesting as the front nine as they are almost all wide open shots.
-If the course got crowded, I could see a few issues where fairways might cross but nothing terrible.
-It had been fairly rainy the days before we played and there were definitely spots that held a lot of water.
-At times the course flow was slightly hard to follow (the main issue was where to go after hole nine).
-Plays by a lot of backyards and based on all of the keep out or beware of dog signs, I don't think the homeowners around there would be very happy about you retrieving a disc from their yards.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this a very fun course with a great front nine and a back nine that could be a little bit more interesting. There are smaller trees on the back nine that could grow and make those holes more interesting. If you are in the area definitely stop by and give this course a try, its worth it.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Most of the front 9 holes are very good, trees in play
-Tees are huge, are marked with colored corners and also have distances sprayed on
-Signs are top notch as well, full color, easy to read, lots of information
-facilities are good as far as walkways, bathrooms and rest areas
-tall grass/weeds + evergreens on back 9 will be excellent some day
-good backing behind the course financially and also for lost discs and whatnot

Cons:

-The holes along the pond are just unnecessarily frustrating. Some of holes are so close to the pond that a small roll or skip will have you swimming. Also, if there is a strong wind gust or your hand slips, you'll also be taking a dip.
-Next complaint would be the two holes on the back nine where you are essentially throwing towards a small stream that is heavily wooded/vegetated. The hole placement is too close to the stream considering the approach angle.
-One hole plays towards one of the busiest streets in Noblesville (150+ ft. away) which just seems dangerous to me.
-should be noted that some of these problems are caused by open air and tailwinds which don't always come into play

Other Thoughts:

most holes will get better with age. Also bought a disc at the 'pro shop' which was cool. Hard to say which is better between this and Northview. Maybe edge to Northview for hills.

Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This double-looping 9s, park-setting course has top-of-the-line Houck signs, good DISCatcher baskets, and nicely sized concrete tees. In fact, each hole has two tees and two pin placements. The signs, located at the red tees, have bag holders attached to their poles. The blue tees, not having the benefit of the signs' information, still have the hole length painted on the tees. There are rules signs at holes #1 and 3 (for those parking at either side of the park). Additionally, this well-manicured course includes a nice pavillion, restroom and water facilities, and not just a practice basket - but an entire practice hole.

As for the course itself, there is a small pond in play on Holes #1, 2, 6 & 9. While it is easy to stay out of, it can also be intimidating and does tend to gobble up stray discs. The pond is especially treacherous for lefties or sidearmers. Along with the pond, there are two small creeks that provide a possible water hazard on Holes #2-4, 11, & 13.

Highlights of individual holes include excellent greens on Holes #1, 2, 9 & 18, a nice anhyzer hole on #3, a great, forced-anhyzer or sidearm drive on blue #4, some light woods on Holes #7 & 8, and some interesting mounds on Holes #17 & 18.

In my opinion the best stretch of holes are #18-#4.

Cons:

While the majority of the course has great amenities, there are no trash cans or benches on the course itself. The course is also pretty much flat, like most Indianapolis courses.

The design, for the most part is strong, especially given the land available, but there are some flow issues. The walk from #5 to 6 requires a walk across #2's fairway. From #6 to 7 (especially the blue pad), you have to backtrack. Hole #8 from the blue pad pretty much invites you to throw directly over #7's basket due to the lanes in the woods. The walk from #8 to 9 has you cross #6's green. The walk from #9 to 10 is long. And finally, going from #15 to 16 requires backtracking down #15's fairway.

These are fairly minor issues, though, compared to the course's main flaw: the back 9 is almost unbearably boring. It is, for the most part, long with very few obstacles and little variety (the course overall rarely forces any other shot than a RHBH). It is a huge disappointment after the front 9. In fact, you may have a much better time playing the 2 sets of 9 pads on the front twice and skipping the back altogether. Now there are patches of tall grass (only in the summer) and some small trees that have been planted. But neither of these provides any real obstacles.

On that same thread, there are only light woods on a couple of holes and the water hazards are easy to avoid with smart play. One can also use the walking paths as OB, as they factor in on holes #1, 12, 14, 17 & 18. If there are walkers in the park, these paths can easily become a definite downside.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course. It is nice, clean, and easy to play. The front 9 is perhaps the best stretch of holes in the Indianapolis area. But as great as the front 9 is, the back 9 is equally boring.

This course, with its great parking, pavillion, and restrooms, along with its in-sight proximity to McDonald's and alternative pins and tees is nearly ideal for tournaments.

My advice and bottom line: play 27 holes - front 9 blue and red pads and the back 9 once (just to experience it).

Pros:

Great amenities. The infrastructure sets the bar for other courses. Very accessible. Front nine about as technical as you can get in this area with little elevation. Alternate tee and pin placements make it a dynamic 'home' course for someone playing it often.

Cons:

Back nine may seem bland to seasoned players, however, the change in direction of the fairways makes it a great learning course for testing different throws, especially if wind is in the equation.

Other Thoughts:

Great local course. Not sure if I would travel too far to play it, so glad it is in my 'backyard'.

A+ for effort, solid B for results 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As others have indicated, the course amenities are about as perfect as you can possibly get. The parking, shelter, restrooms and pathways are immaculate. The concrete tee pads are pristine, and painted with pro/am markers and distances. The am tees have great hole maps, and bag hooks to keep off the grass (which is very useful for mornings with a lot of dew, like when I played). The grass and trees around the course are beautifully manicured, and the baskets are top-of-the-line.
The first nine holes play around a pond and woods, and these make for careful choices in shots, with some risk/reward involved. The pond does come into play on #1, #6 and #9, but most players with some experience can avoid it. As there are no reeds or high grass surrounding the pond (as it's mowed right up to the edge), you won't lose your disc in the brush. Get careless in your distance or shot shape, or perhaps an unlucky bounce, roll or gust of wind, however, and your disc will be sacrificed to the pond gods.
The back nine are much more wide open. Some find this to boring or repetitive, and I would agree to a certain extent. There were three or four 200-225' holes that had few other obstacles, and made for easy birdie opportunities. In these wide open holes, windy conditions could, however, make for significant challenges. Hole #11 has a creek and deep brush running very closely up the left side of the hole. It's easy to throw an errant shot in it, and you will likely not retrieve that disc. I opted for the wussy way out and shot way right. Why do I mention this? Because a nice feature of many of the holes on this course is that you can be gutsy and try a close approach if you have the confidence and accept the risk; on the other hand, you can also play safe shots and still have fun. This same creek shows up again on a few other holes, but more to guard against long shots over the basket.
All in all, this offers a great variety of long and short holes. It's versatile enough where all skill levels can play, have fun, and want to come back. You can certainly tell that a lot of cost and thought went into making this course as great as possible.

Cons:

As one would expect for this part of the country, there is little elevation for the course to work with. On a few holes there is some noticeable shifting of earth to create some variety, but I belive more could or should have been done. However, I believe given what the designers had to work with, it's as good as it can be -- which is still a little disappointing.
As I mentioned earlier, the back nine is quite wide open. This is a real pro if it's windy and there's added challenge, but on most occasions, it just becomes a series of flat, open holes that allows any type of shot and approach. It doesn't challenge you, but as a silver lining, it allows some for some ace runs or an opportunity to practice some shot shapes.

Other Thoughts:

I'm very glad I stopped. I wish that more courses would put this amount of investment into them, as it really does show. The open circle area by the pavilion with short mowed grass allows you to easily practice 250-350' shots. I wish I had a course like this closer to me to be able to regularly play with a such variety.

Holes 3,4,5 plays into Mature trees and a creek (creek plays on#3 only). #6 tee by the pond. #7,#8 plays into & out of mature trees. Finish the front 9 by the pond. The back 9 starts on the East side of the pavilion. Previously nothing more than a wide open field. Man-made mounds,Buffalo grass & very young trees have been added for some obstacles. In 5-7 years the trees will be more of a factor.Until then the tall buffalo grass should be played as an O.B. As another reviewer wrote "placement of your drive is key more than pure distance" could not be said any better. Wind is almost always a factor. Fairway grass cut weekly. Discatchers moved between rounds at the Unions monthly tournaments.

Cons:

Mostly flat, a few holes do have roll-a-way greens. (#1,#2,#9) Back 9 open, use tall grass as risk/reward. holes become more interesting than they look.

Other Thoughts:

Very active club is in the process of adding more grasses in the front and back 9. Bathrooms are locked in the winter,From about Halloween to April fools Day. From #5 to #6 WALK BEHIND #2 TREE LINE TO THE SECOND OPENING,TURN RIGHT FOR #6 TEE, by the pond. Trash cans are located by the bathrooms & Pavilion. Trash cans are used for other park activities, could or could NOT be around the course. Bench by #14 tee. Lost and found discs, out of the water and weeds (#11). You can check for yours when the Unions Pro Shop is open. Go to thehdgu.com for hours and prices. A third pin placement on #7 is in!

Links in the Mix 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 16, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent teepads, signage, and baskets! There is a practice basket to warm up on, The park is in an excellent part of the city (very well taken care of and very safe-feeling), There is a great variety of holes and distances.

Cons:

Restrooms were locked. Hole info was only available at the short distance tees. There was a long walk from 9 basket to 10 tee (10 tee is on the opposite side of the pavilion).

Other Thoughts:

What a great course! This course was beautiful in a beautiful park. It was almost like playing two different courses; the front nine had holes a long a pond, in and along the woods, and around mature growth. The back nine on the other hand was in the open, however, the fairways are lined between long grassy clusters. Playing in late winter, it felt as though a course the British Open (ball golf) would be played on with the heather.

I really liked the integration of the pond on the 3 holes it was in play as well as the small amount of woods that were available; it made for some challenging holes.

The course offers plenty of challenges from both the long and short tees. I hope to come back in the summer when the tall grassy fairways make the course more challenging.

I highly recommend this course to anyone that is in the area. You will not be disappointed.

***Edit***
I have played this course a few more times since my initial review as well as a quite a few more courses. This is a NICE course, but in my opinion, it is not a great course. It has nice baskets, pads, signs, multiple pin positions....but the variety is lacking. The back 9 holes are mostly open. I do like the buffalo grass, but it really doesn't add any challenge. A few trees were recently added which will come into play a few years down the road. I am changing my rating from a 4.5 to a 3.5.
