Pros:
This course is in a fairly large park in Grandview and is the only course between the Tri-Cities and Yakima. The park has a play area, bathrooms and a nice stream along one side. Trees are a mix of ages, depending on area of park. 8 and 12-15 are in an older area w/ mature trees(shade!). 1-7, 16-18 are in a newer area with medium trees, just starting to be a hazard. 8-11 are ina formerly open are with freshly planted trees. more on these holes later.
This course has just been expanded from 9 to 18 holes so the original 9(1-7, 16, 17) are well finished. Good tee pads and signs. They also are well spaced with no close holes and some fairly long ones, unusual for a park course. Grass is well taken care of and greens aren't wore down, a nice change of pace for an eastern Washington course.
Cons:
While the park is good sized, the portion with most of the new holes(8-15) is maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the park so they feel shoehorned in, especially 9-12, which parallel each other across a field with new trees to separate them eventually. They are close enough together that an errant throw will put you in the wrong fairway, not unlikely with the wind in this area. 12 also skirts uncomfortably close to the play area. 13-15 are along walking trails and the bathrooms so you need to be careful since this portion of the park is busy.
As hot as it will be in the summer here I was disappointed in how few of the tees took advantage of available shade. Also, pins are not numbered which led to confusion on holes where there are multiple pins possible.
These holes are also so new they don't have tee pads or signs yet, but plans are in the works for both as soon as they get the funds. Based on the original 9 I expect they will be well done.
Most of the par 4s seem too short and w/o extra hazards to rate the higher par.
Other Thoughts:
Because this course was laid out in 2 stages it plays as 2 different courses. It's too bad a more comprehensive re-design wasn't possible, but I'm impressed they have a 18 hole course in this fairly small town.
Despite the cons, I like this course, look forward to playing it again, and donated money to help finish it. Anyone in the area willing to help would be welcome and can contact the Parks Dept.
