Horse Pasture Pitch n Putt

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 DISCatcher Pros with yellow bands. All well mounted and shiny new as of summer 2023.
- 9 tees signs that list Hole # and distance. These help to make navigating green to tee pretty simple.
- Good lengths of holes for a beginner level course in a tight space. Distances off the tee range from ~175' to ~250'. Other than the Monforton School object course, Bozeman really doesn't have anything beginner appropriate so this fits a niche.
- Course seemed well maintained. Pretty decent mow the day I played and it had been raining a ton so they had to have gotten to work as soon as they could.
- Gorgeous views of the Gallatin Valley and surrounding mountain ranges. You're in Bozeman, MT(along with everyone else who watched Yellowstone!), you know it's gonna be pretty.
- Private property open to public use. They ask for a $5 donation, or less if you don't have $5, or to just play the course if you can't afford to donate. I like their attitude.

Cons:

- Exceedingly limited by what the land offers from an acreage/elevation/obstacle standpoint. In a small space that's mostly flat, without trees, course designers can only do so much.
- The tee boxes. Normally I'd mention even the most modest attempt at tees in my Pros section. Not here where the small, wooden-framed tees were filled with something similar to volleyball court sand. It's really loose, even after all that rain. I can't see them improving much unless new material is used like crushed granite that can be compacted.
-With the limited space and lack of obstacles there wasn't a lot of opportunity for diversity in hole length or type. There's some corral fencing and a marshy spot that's fenced off to contend with. Otherwise it's short holes that allow for most any throwing style.
-No course map. Just a greeting board with course rules and a donation box. Easy enough to follow with how small the area is and tee signs at each hole, but beginner courses should offer any available amenity to make it a good experience for the first timers. A small laminated map or QR code to a pdf would be a nice add to that greeting board.
-Just off the mow was some extra tall grass. I got a little wind bump on a drive and landed 45' pin high left. I was lucky to find the disc in chest deep grass after hopping a small irrigation ditch that was hidden by said tall grass. I mean, keep it in the dang fairway on a 200' hole but if ya don't...

Other Thoughts:

This is a fine little beginner course that loops around the Eagle Mount Bozeman horse pastures with amazing views of the Bridger Mountain Range. It needs some beating in, further maintenance, and better tees. For the intended audience, and given the land being worked with, it's fine little install. Once it's fully gussied up and tee boxes are worked out I'll probably bump it up into my 1.5/5 group but as is it fits nicely with my other 1/5's. Serious players should pass this one by while kiddos, new players, and course baggers looking for a quick pelt will find this to be the course of choice in the area.
