Eagle Ridge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Mostly Short holes so plan on playing quickly.
-Practice/warm-up putting chain near the first tee pad
-Good Elevation Changes.
-Friendly area
-Tall prairie grass for roughs along fairways was very short compared to what you usually see.

Cons:

-Lot of tight wooded areas.
-hole 17 has a lot of dead trees that need to be chopped down by the park district still. Would make it a better playing experience once taken care of.
-If prairie grass gets too tall again in the future I can see it being trouble some for most players.

Other Thoughts:

-Can cause players to overthink and overannalyze shots so come mentally prepared and have your trick shots/discs ready for use!

Eagle Ridge 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Eagle Ridge offers a great variety of shot types. I had to throw straight, hyzer, anhyzer, up and down. There are some almost completely open holes and some completely wooded ones and nearly everything in between. The distances also vary from under 200 from the shorts to over 500 on the longs. The long tees are now concrete, which is a very big plus. The tees they have here and at Jericho Lake across the river are some of the best I have ever played on. The signs and posts are also among the best I have seen. Navigation is not terrible, but the proximity of a lot of the tees and baskets can make it difficult for those who are unfamiliar with the layout. I honestly could not have done more with the land that is present.
There is a practice basket with bricks for around the world, a bulletin board and picnic tables at the start.
The baskets show some age but still catch quite well.

Cons:

The rough can get very rough in the summer and spring. Playing on a dry day in late fall is about as clear and clean as it is going to get. The park is usually pretty well manicured, but the rough can definitely get thick with poison ivy.
Update 5/27/2014: After playing a round from the longs, I realized there are some definite NAGS's that occur. Number 3 has the tee partially behind some bushes that do not allow a clear shot at the already challenge intended path. Hole 8 and 12 are similar.
To bring this course up to nearly a 5 it would have to be longer overall. Even from the longs it was not a huge challenge to get a 3 on most holes. That is really nitpicking though.

Other Thoughts:

Eagle Ridge is quite possibly one of the best courses in the area between Rockford and Joliet. Even set in a nice suburban park, the holes are very well thought out and have clear lines that need to be hit to score well. I live 30 minutes away and at first did not think it was worth driving to, but definitely have changed my mind.
For the novice player this will be a challenging course but for intermediate players it is the perfect combination of challenge and fun.

Worth the in state drive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is in a fairly secluded part of the civic center's land. Only a section of a path runs through but only comes into play from 2 of the long sets of tees (which are elevated 10 feet over joggers/bikers heads). Once you walk over the train tracks you notice (especially if your from the chicago area) your stepping into an actual DGC. The land used gives the best variety for this course. The "open" holes have enough obstacles in the way to make you still choose a line while the wooded holes offer enough challenges to where if you hit a tree off the box your never guaranteed a 3 or a 4 and even a 5. Something nice to have in this area. The shorts are a great course to get in your buzzz/roc practice while the longs force you to use every disc your brought. The longs add plenty of lengths to the shorts and plenty of challenge for the adv/pro player. Not a destination course in the country but certainly for the state.

Cons:

The longs are limestone as of right now. Money was raised just waitng on the park district to get their arse in gear. Some of the long tee pads could use some minor tweaking as far as placement. Poison ivy could be a pain in the ass but the park district put very imformative signs around to warn people about them.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course and will miss it when I move. Special thangs to the FVMDG especially SR. for all the hard work he puts in as well as the DG sodfather Frank for taking the time to make the trip to lend a hand and install some of those sweet new benches.

Awesome Variety 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

My round at Oswego was incredibly fun! The course's best feature is it's large variety of shots demanded in its holes. Normally, I consider myself a right hand backhand thrower. Here, however I found that the course forced me to have a consistent game with all sorts of different shots, including forehand drives and approaches... very good practice for people trying to get better. Additionally, there is a lot of variety in the distances of each of the holes and this is enhanced even further by the long sets of tees. Unlike some courses, the long tees here, though not concrete, are fairly easy to judge as to where exactly the teepad ends and begins. There's also some good scenery as you go in and out of a forest that kind of takes you away from the park, which is in fact pretty busy.

To summarize: A moderately challenging round, thanks to variety. There are birdies to be had though, so if you are having a good day you should have an awesome round.

Update 3/31/13!!!!
One of my few gripes about this course when I first played it was that the pro tees were not concrete. Well that has changed, so I felt the course deserved a half a disc increase in its rating.

Cons:

*I wasn't very impressed with the first three holes from the short tees... they were pretty short and open. The round picked up considerably after that.

*There simply was not a hole on the course that was amazing. They were all pretty good, and you'd get to the teepad and say "what a neat hole." there weren't any that blew my mind.

Other Thoughts:

When I went here, the baskets for holes 2, 17, and 18 were down, but a Parks person was picking them up in a pickup truck. I don't know if vandalism is common at this course, but if so that would be a most unfortunate way of ruining a very fun place!

Finally: several snakes seen throughout the round! For some people that's a deal breaker.

Oswego Disc Monster 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has lots of variety when it comes to shot selection, as well as balancing between wooded and open holes.

Cons:

This course will eat your discs if you are not an accurate thrower. To some, that provides incentive away from risk-taking, but for others, it just means $10-$20 down the drain.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course that is great for experienced players but maybe a little frustrating for inexperienced players.

Eagle Ridge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Variety in hole design
- Distance variety in holes
- Good use of the given terrain
- Modest elevation changes
- Well defined fairways
- Risk/reward in shot selection
- Blind holes
- Interesting basket placements
- Solid tee signs
- Two sets of tees
- Concrete pads on the the short tees
- Baskets in Good Conditions
- Navigation is fairly simple.
- Bathrooms at Civic Center (when open)

Cons:

- The rough is thick thick thick.
- Large Amounts of Poisin Ivy
- Bike path runs through the park
- Some of the long tees have "unfairways"
- Long tees have no tee signs
- Long tees are gravel marked by two yellow stones.
- Fierce Bugs
- No waterfountain

Other Thoughts:

Eagle Ride is an excellent disc golf course that starts out in a Prairie setting and transitions into some moderate-tight woods. This course boasts a good variety of distance with both long open drives and tight technical shots. Each hole feels unique and memorable and they will test your arsenal of shots. The holes in the woods are very technical and will force you to control your shots. The thickness of the rough creates high risk/reward decisions by forcing you to make the choice to go big at the risk of an errant shot that burrows deep into the thicket or to play it safe for three by keeping it in the fairway. Hillside basket placements also create high risk reward decisions as missed putts could result in roll-aways. The long tees are for the most part very different than the shorts and make the course much more challenging. Only a few long tees seem to be a longer shot of the short tee, each other long tee requires a different shot than the short tee to score successfully. Overall the course design is all that it can be. Some added amenities such as concrete pads and tee signs for the long tees and some clearing of rough (especially poisin Ivy) could bump this course up to a 4.5 for me. I highly recommend this course because it is significantly better than most Chicagoland courses.

*** Survival Notes:
-There are restrooms on site only if the Civic Center is open.
- No water fountain on site that I could find, bring liquids the prairie holes get quite toasty in the sun.
- Bring bug spray the bugs are fierce in the summer time.
- Watch for poisin Ivy (there is lots)
- If you throw a disc over the fence on the East side of the property, the company can get ornery about you jumping it to retreive your disc. I would try and get permission before searching for it.

Must play! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great variation! Lots of chances to utilize different driving techniques for all types of throwers.
-Recreational and professional tees (pros only gravel)
-Good signage with pictures of the holes from the Red tees.
-Good mix of hole layouts. Tightly wooded holes demand and reward accuracy, a few open 350Ft+
-Great shot-shaping here! Wooded holes force you into throwing a certain technique or disc...even on the more open holes this is evident.
-Easy to navigate. I've never seen "Next Tee" signs, but the walking lines guide well. Even when the course is busy, it's not congested.
-Elevation is utilized decently here. Throwing up/down the ravines, there's a couple elevated tboxes.
-Plays well after a rain. This course was dry/drained enough to play a day after a huge thunderstorm. If you're wearing proper footwear, this course is like a walk in the park.
-Good practice area, which is also used as the 19th pin/green, throwing from the backside of 18's green.
-Nice park information board and benches at the start. A couple man-made stools near tboxes throughout.
-Beautiful, lush park. So green! (I'm used to desert terrain)
-Plenty of trash cans throughout, please use them!

Cons:

-Course plays short. I'd bet it was designed with technicality in mind over raw distance, and that's fine. However, I would prefer a few more options in the 375+ range.
-Lots of thick brush/undergrowth here. Now that the course has been around for a few years there's been improvements. However, an errant throw will likely lose you a disc.
-Change. Started playing this course when it was only 9. Moved away from ILL, only to come back and find all but one of the baskets in the same position. This leads me to believe the pin placements never move.
-No water hazards. I find this to be a Con, not because I like diving for discs, but the risk/reward isn't as high and I normally like it.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my favorites in the Western suburbs! Very solid design, and you can't coast through this round and expect to score well. Playing the pro tees, and this turns into a different course. The difficulty skyrockets, and the Con listed above (lack of distance) isn't an issue, and there's plenty added when playing Pro.

I would suggest long pants and hiking footwear. Don't come out in flat Adidas (like I normally wear). If you go into the rough, you want to be protected from the plants and bugs. Bugs CAN be bad here, however I didn't notice many after a thunderstorm, which I found to be odd.

This course is 5 miles away from Jericho, which, is no Gold level course for sure, but very enjoyable nonetheless! I do think, however, that Eagle Ridge is a MUCH stronger course than Jericho Lake.

Leagues here on Thursday nights, I believe 6PM start.

Worth Your Time! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice mixture of wooded and semi wooded holes. Some more open, but a solid mixture.

- Several alternates set up for the holes.

- Very well maintained course, virtually NO litter, and the grass is always trimmed up nicely.

- mostly dirt or sand tee pads, but very clearly marked with signs, etc.

- Some use of elevation which is nice.

- Baskets are all pretty new and in good shape.

Cons:

- Not much bad about the course other than I did almost have a disc stolen... Left it at a hole, and some kid tried to lie and say it was his, he even tried to rub off my name on it but you could still see it. I got it back though

Other Thoughts:

I think this is one of my favorite courses I've ever played really. I think the only thing that could be better is maybe having cement tees? I think that's nitpicking, but I like them.

Pros:

- Course is set in wooded area away from any other park activities. Good sense of seclusion inside the forest.
- Almost every type of shot needed throughout the course. Definitely rewards good line shaping through wooded fairways and around larger trees.
- Some decent elevation changes on a few holes help to keep every drive a bit different than the last.
- Alternate tees turn this tough course into a brutal one. There are lots more obstacles and lots more length on almost all of the pros.
- Good baskets, great tee pads, great signage, and even brooms to clear the box. Alternate tees are in good shape and clearly marked as well.

Cons:

- Not many... terrain is pretty much flat in general, no water, nothing that can be helped. Some of the holes are kind of similar to each other, but that is bound to happen with the land in use.

Other Thoughts:

- Nice wooded course that rewards good shots and punishes bad. Wooded fairways are mostly clear, no random skinny trees to avoid. Holes out of the woods also have good obstacles.
- The first time through, I stuck to the short tees, and was grateful for it. Some of the pro tees seemed downright nasty, in a good way of course. Hole 2's pro tee is directly over a nasty patch of forest/rough that would feast on short shots.
- Course made excellent use of the available land. Very well designed and enjoyable. One of my favorite Chicagoland courses thus far.

This is one of those courses that show how a disc golf course should be designed. This course has a great combination of holes, from woods and fields, hyzers and anhyzers, and long and short shots. This course really tests your ability to place your shots and ability to throw with accuracy. Plenty of risk/reward with this course. Played a tournament here a year ago. Pros:

THE best course that I've played in the western subs of Chicago. Plenty of challenge as you wind up, down, through, and around the beautiful scenery. Plenty of risk/reward as you have to make frequent decisions to either lay up for the par or go for the chains and get your birdie. Good signs and flow to the course. A must play if you are anywhere close to Montgomery/Aurora/Oswego/Naperville.

Cons:

Couldn't give this course a 5 because it only has 1 hole out of the 18 that you can unleash a bomb on. I always leave this course wanting to have been able to air it out just a few more times. Mosquitoes are pretty thick in the summer during the late evening, so bring the spray.

home town course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There is a lot to like about this course. There are two set of tees, with cement tee boxes on the shorts and limestone on the longs with a long term plan of those being concrete as well. Each tee pad has a broom from sweeping debris off. This course is maintained very well by the local club. They put a lot of work into it and it shows. There are garbage cans on almost every hole and very little litter. If you are coming to this course, please keep it that way! The course is in a decently populated area, but has a secluded feel to it. A nice putting green and bulletin board off the first tee. The practice pin also makes for a nice 19th hole if the course isn't busy.

Eagle Ridge requires a variety of shots to do well as it has a good mix of open and wooded holes as you weave in and out of the woods. It is somewhat near the river so there is as much elevation as the area can provide, though there isn't much. Par is very attainable from the short tees, but you will have to work hard to get it.

Cons:

There are not many places for big drives, from the short tee at least. I'm not a big of the tee signs. They are pictures of the holes with an arrow pointing toward the pin and they're not very clear. A simple drawn map would work better in my opinion, especially with the blind holes, which there are a decent number of (blind holes are not a con). Some of the wooded holes have trees guarding the basket, which I am not a fan of. There is deep shule in the summer that can eat discs. Be carefully of poison ivy. Navigating the long tees is very tough unless you are there with a guide. Some of the long tees come at the pin from an entirely different direction than the shorts.

I don't mind it, but there are no bathrooms on site.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course often as I grew up in the area and recently bought a house less than a mile away. Some of the fairways have no defined path to the target, but that is been changed somewhat with the removal of some dead trees. It is the best and most challenging courses in the area and a must for discers in the Fox Valley area.

If you are going here for the first time, there is a parking area along the road that has a walking path into the park. Just follow this path over the tracks to the first hole.

Pros:

Great variety of hyzer and anhyzer shots.

Quite a few holes you cannot see the basket from the tee but there are wooden posts with pictures showing where the basket is. Not drawings mind you, actual pictures!

The holes are not so close to each other that you risk throwing a disc into someone's fairway. (You could I imagine if you tried)

There are shots where you throw downhill and also uphill.

The grass was mowed quite nicely for the fairways, a definite plus!

Some shots are moderately occupied by trees and some are wide open - great variety!

Most holes are fairly short and this would be a negative in my book as I like longer holes but.... the layout definitely makes up for this.

Bathrooms at entrance and trash cans scattered throughout course.

The scenery as you play is enough for the girlfriend who doesn't want to play to be amused with the hike.

Cons:

Cons are very minor, GREAT COURSE

1) Mosquitos - bring repellent
2) Bathrooms - although one is at the entrance, that's it... use nature or hold it!
3) If you like longer shots you might not be 100% happy.

Other Thoughts:

I was in Illinois visiting friends and came across this course via this site. None of them had played although it was about 7 miles from their homes. Although it doesn't top my favorite course ( http://www.dgcoursereview.com...e.php?id=1635) This course is definitely second!

make your game better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good course with a mix of open and wooded holes. Uses the elevation available very well. With the addition of concrete tees from the short tee positions, this course is one of my favorites in the area. There are many different types of shots required from the tee on many holes. Mix in the long tee positions, and it plays as a totally different course. There is a good mix of both short and long holes that do not favor a RHBH or LHBH player overly. The wooded holes require precision whether it being a drive, upshot, or putt in some instances as there are trees protecting many of the baskets. On the open holes, there are some obstacles in your way taking away the hyzer at many tees requiring more than one type of drive in your bag. Accuracy is definately at a premium here.
Tee signs are very prominent making course navigation easy, however, the hole pictures only showed the location of the basket with an arrow, making some holes difficult to judge the location of the basket when you could not see it from the tee. As well as not having any signage by the long tees, of which some are in a different direction from the basket to the next tee than the shorts.

The longs make a completely different course, adding not only distance, but also different shots off the tee. the natural tees are very well marked and in good shape with large yellow rocks and easy to see, however, there is no distance markings on them. You have to go to the short tees to find that. With the addition of concrete tees, which the local club is raisning money for, will make them that much better.
Errant shots are punished by some very dense schule that can turn a bad drive into a double or triple bogey.

Other Thoughts:

Great course that is a lot of fun to play from both the short and long tees. The only downside is the bugs and some poison ivy that you need to keep an eye out for in the woods. Make sure to bring some bug spray with you and an accurate drive.
