Great Example of a “Muni” Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ 9 holer with two sets of tees to make it an 18. Most of the alternate tees create news angles, and the lengths are often different enough to re-think your choice of disc, so it comes pretty close to being an "18 hole course" with only 9 baskets

+ Pretty municipal park setting, and after the 1st hole, you cross a creek and spend the rest of the time separated from other park activities

+ Mix of open and wooded holes, with surprisingly dense wooded holes midway through each 9

+ Good use of available elevation with a mix of uphill, downhill, sidehill holes

Cons:

- I guess if there's much traffic on the course, you'll have problems because you're doing two loops using the same baskets

Other Thoughts:

~ If you're playing 18, I suggest you swap the last hole (9 and 18) in order to finish your round with a par 4 closer. They're both good, but it's just my personal preference to have a longer final hole

~ The first tee is a bit of a walk from the main parking lot (walk down the path past the tennis courts. But as I was finishing up, I noticed an alternate parking lot near the final basket. To use it, travel a bit farther North on Manada Gap Road

~ Back when I used to play golf with sticks and balls, I enjoyed municipal courses. They were less formal and cheaper than other public courses. They could be crowded and weren't particularly memorable, but they provided adequate challenge for playing multiple rounds. East Hanover reminded me of a "muni" golf course in every good way: playing on a quiet summer weekday morning, this course did exactly what it's designed to do: it's a pretty and varied layout in a town park that's easy to play, good for newbies and fun for experienced players

COURSE AMENITIES:
Excellent signage, 18 poured concrete tees, excellent baskets. Porta potty, plenty of parking. Very cart-friendly.

RECOMMENDED COMBINATIONS:
Close enough to South Hills, Shank and Riverside, but I suggest combining this with a few other nearby 9's, like Hotel Hershey and Schiavoni Park

Fun course, not far off route 81 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Reasonable mix of open and lightly wooded holes. Good use of elevation. Mowed routes through heavy rough between holes. Wide fairways. Didn't seem like there would be much conflict with non-disc-golfers, except if there was a ball game.

Cons:

Almost no "next tee" signage, can be difficult to navigate. No maps at hole 1, probably due to Covid-19. Take a picture of the board map. Was fairly dry today, but it looks like the course could be wet after a rain. Course has 18 pads, and 9 baskets. Was fine playing this afternoon, but might be a problem on weekends or other busy times.

Other Thoughts:

Advanced players would probably find this course fairly simple. As an older beginner, who doesn't enjoy long holes, I found it to be fair. It was pretty windy when we played today, which made throwing at 8/17 tricky. The course is just a short drive off of 81. If you're driving by, it's worth a stop,

Great for Beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

All of the holes now have 2 sets of concrete tee pads, providing two pretty different looks for each of the nine baskets. Played in pretty sloppy winter conditions and had no traction issues on pads. Nice mix of open and partially wooded holes. Not too many places where I think you might lose a disc. Some reasonable distances for an older beginner like myself, giving even me a chance to birdie some par 4's that would simply be unreachable par 3's on other courses.

Cons:

Sloppy fairways and greens on a majority of holes, definitely does not drain well, which is probably why the space was available. Can be pretty confusing for the first time player to find the next tee pad. There are markers hanging on baskets telling you which is the general direction to each of the two following tees, but they are printed on paper inside of plastic sleeves so quite a few are missing or water logged. Tee signage does not indicate OB and hazard areas.

Other Thoughts:

Great resource for anyone looking to play a round. Will be curious to see how wet it stays come spring/summer. Some nice challenges for a beginner, not sure how much so for an advanced player. Like most courses, a few rounds played will save some time and stress when searching for next tee. Great use of 9 baskets to provide two pretty unique 9's with the dual tee pads.

Work in progress 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 22, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is coming together nicely. Concrete tee pads are slowly being installed. Good mix of long and short holes.

Cons:

Heavy brush and tall grass along fairways make disc searches a nightmare. Some holes very very muddy. Course could benefit from some directional signage.

Other Thoughts:

This looks like it will be a fine course once construction is completed.

East Hanover Is No Pushover! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

East Hanover DGC is a one year old course when I played here in April of 2018. The large sprawling park contains baseball fields, playground, fitness track, tennis courts and more.

The DGC starts and finishes both the front and back 9's in the center of the park near the street. There is a nice colored map here. Take a pic, it will help your navigation. The tee signs are a made with a nice colored composite material. The baskets are brand new Discatcher Pro 28 models. At this time, the course has natural tees with a front board. The natural tees are rough in places, boggy in others and one or two are filled with tripping, dangerous roots. They are currently the course's achillies heel.

The course uses the 9 baskets twice each to make 18 holes. This system works well here as the two tee pads always give you a different look at the basket. I liked the variety of long-short-Ace run-legitimate par 4's-open-technical-
uphill-downhills. Kudos to K & W Engineers for a great course design.

There is danger lurking on many holes with deep rough lining one side of the fairway on a number of holes. I wonder if the difficulty of the course might be over the head of many of it's players. This afternoon, there were three other groups playing and none of them were skilled enough to avoid the rough.

# 17 and 18 are both tough par 4's. # 17 is 578' but plays longer being semi-uphill. 18 is 597' with rough along the entire right side. It wouldn't have been too far fetched to make one of these an "easy" 5.

Cons:

I think this might be a three season course. All the water drains off the high ground where the soccer and baseball fields are leaving the lower level around 4-5-6 very boggy. It would have to be pretty miserable during the winter months.

The biggest problem with the course right now is the lack of concrete pads. The current natural pads run the gauntlet from very serviceable to treacherous to currently not playable. Also, a few of the pads are now on the uphill, a particular peeve of mine.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course could really benefit from having about 50 yards of wood chips spread about. These chips are sometimes available from the local park districts as they chip up all the downed trees and branches.

This is a solid, challenging intermediate course. With concrete pads, the rating goes up. If I notice that concrete pads have been installed, I'll be glad to raise my rating another 1/2 point. Until that time, I'd probably stay away from playing here during your Pennsylvania winters. If you do insist on playing then, wear your rubber boots.

Another nice effort 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two unique tees for each basket providing different looks.
Mix of wooded and open holes.
Nice tee signs

Cons:

No tee pads though mentioned for the spring
A few holes have been very muddy both times played

Other Thoughts:

Amother unique course in central PA. The More the better I feel. Some really nice looks at basket and can just play nine if short on time.
