Norbert and Daggets Favorite Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

As a longish thrower who has morphed into a woods golfer over the past few years I was very curious to try this one.

Elon park has 2 18 hole courses and this one is quite a bit longer and more devious. I played the longest layout, go hard or go home right?

A buddy of mine played a dubs league out here and said that -5 got them a podium so I came in just trying to shoot even.

The course is long, wooded and features many true multi shot par fours that push even the best disc throwers to execute and I don't think you can expect to score without at least 350 backhand and forehand/turnover. A roller could also be of service on a few holes.

The tee pads are mainly large, concrete and some have a rough run off area at the end which I liked, and the signs are relatively basic but will give you the info you need. Next tee signs and minis on the trees were also a cool touch for navigation. Baskets were Innova Disccatchers and I didn't have any issues with them, we're all in good shape. Benches on every hole I think as well, some with a couple.

The attention to detail here is easy to miss, but it makes the course. A couple of mildly elevated baskets, greens of multiple heights, OB marked with giant PVC pipes and the way the shots are shaped to make you execute a shot are all huge pluses here that made it great to me.

Some holes are a little tight, but nothing I would deem unreasonable, some holes are long but relative to par they are fair.

I shot pretty well and made a couple of putts to put up a -2 and was very happy with that. The birdie 3 on holes 3 and 5 were highlights. And I may be able to say I'm the first person to go Flare/Flare on 3 for the birdie.

The course is art as it relates to disc golf. Maybe a bit brutalist and lacking in mass appeal at points but pure art nonetheless. My favorite in Charlotte so far.

Cons:

The negatives are ones that I sometimes see on high quality courses that are not currently brushed up for big events.

Grass was a bit long in spots, and some of the little bridges made to mitigate what I assume could be swampy areas in other seasons looked a little out of place on a course of this caliber.

Navigation was mostly good but there are a few spots you could get crossed up, I almost skipped a few holes by getting turned around.

It's also a little confusing that the main parking area serves hole 1 of the other course and you can access hole 16 from there on this course but where 1 is there isn't an indication that is where the course starts. So I actually played it starting on 16, and thought that was fine it was a little weird.

Other Thoughts:

This is getting into must play area for me, if you are intermediate level or higher and can throw 300 with any kind of accuracy you should try it. Definitely a gem in the Queen Cities crown.

Charlotte Golf at its Angriest drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+It\'s free. Mind boggling is the quality of disc golf you can get in Charlotte at city parks. This is not a unique trait of Elon Park (home of the two Beaver courses) but is huge when you place it next to how good these courses are. +Has it all. OB, water, trees, island greens, placement golf, par 4/5s, ace opportunities. Not too many aspects of the game you won\'t find here. +Shot variety. All aspects of your game will be necessary. Great use of elevation. While it is definitely Charlotte woods golf, the fairways are clear and defined. Off the fairway there are fair scramble chances which was refreshing in comparison to some of the other courses in the area. Also provides options off the tees which is always a plus for me. The reputation had me thinking this would be a "hit the fairway or you\'re pitching sideways" course but I found it very fair while also challenging. +The community. All assumptions but it seems clear that the Charlotte Disc Golf Club takes its job seriously and it shows. Believe the course has gone through changes recently and everything from pad to basket was very clean and efficient. All the small details show the love and work put in. Case in point- the massive amount of OB stakes that add one of many small touches that add to the enjoyment. +Not feeling the angriest? There\'s another course on site! +This was the least busy course I played in the area. Doesn\'t have the name appeal of Hornets Nest or Nevin. +Great equipment. Best pads in town and Innova Discatchers. Shout out to whoever made these baskets the Charlotte standard. Not a Mach III in sight in this area.

Cons:

-Tee signs did not have images, just distance, par and OB information. Digital maps will be helpful on your first play through. Updated signs may be imminent as it felt like the course had recently been redesigned or updated. -Not too many garbage cans on course. Feel like this is due to the city not wanting to drive vehicles that deep in the woods, so it makes sense, but will add it as a con. Like always, pack in pack out is not that hard!

Other Thoughts:

For my money this was my favorite course in Charlotte. Has a great variety hole to hole. While you will be getting beat down by long woods holes often, there are some short, reachable holes mixed in. Also some fun par 4 and 5 holes that reward smart placement shots. A couple of signature holes will stick in my memory, the par 5 #3 and the island hole, #15 I believe. Was very fun to pair with Eager Beaver, a shorter course that starts a couple hundred feet from Angry Beaver. This course seemed a different flavor from your standard Charlotte course. While you will find plenty of your patented 450-550 par 4s with gentle turns, there is more in the way of variety at Angry. Perhaps it is due to me having no tournament coverage or Pro Tour providing me with expectations, but man did I love this course. If you don\'t have fun playing here, you\'re doing this thing wrong. Difficulty is not a con for me, especially when the shots are fair and doable.

Disc Golf is a humbling sport. drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a well put together course. One of the few courses in the Charlotte area where OB is marked so clearly. The short and long pads are also marked very clearly. I like the bench on hole 1 that says the name of the course "angry beaver". There was even a "respect the beaver" sign after I think hole 3. It helps give the course its own feel and distinguishes it. Course customization/uniqueness is something that is lacking in the disc golf world so it was very nice to see this course adding some customization even if it is something small. The creek contours the course very well and the bridges to cross it are in good shape. The elevation changes are nice. I finished this course at +8 from the short tees and loved it.

Cons:

At the short pad for hole #4 there was no par or distance. It looks like there is a stand for the tee sign but there is no tee sign in it. Hole #14 could use more clarity as to where the tee is. I believe this has to do with how sharp the left turn is halfway down the fairway. Standing on the tee I thought I was going for the hole #16 disc catcher. When I was putting on hole #16 a disc from a player on hole #14 landed near me because he thought the same thing.

Other Thoughts:

Signs pointing where the start of angry beaver and eager beaver are would be a nice addition. I was a first time player here and went left at the court and after a few minutes I realized I was on the eager beaver side but I still couldn't figure out where hole #1 was for that course. Driving out of that area you then see the "angry beaver" sign across the court on the back of a bench, but it is facing in a way that incoming vehicles cannot see it.

Who’s Angry, You or the Course? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A grueling woods challenge that will beat down most.

-Amenities: Big concrete tees, DISCatchers, a mix of tee signs (shorts have good DGPT-style maps, longs only have number, distance, and par). OB stakes are clear throughout. Rocks in the fairway mark 100', 200', and 300' to the pin. Next tee signs and benches.

-Difficulty: Whoa, this one is a beast. Imagine all the hardest parts of Hornet's Nest, and then expand them to 18 holes, and that's a pretty good picture of Angry Beaver. To score well, you'll need 300' of excellent accuracy in the woods throughout.

-Multi-Tees/Baskets: Every hole has two tees, and several holes have baskets in both short and long pin positions. Per the usual, this provides players with a better selection to tailor to their wants.

-Seclusion: With long holes in the thick woods, it's possible to get away from the rest of park for a lot of this course.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Using constant trees, solid elevation, and a creek, there's a plethora of shapes. Half of the holes are multi-shot par-4s or -5s. The creek is a great feature on (1), (2), (7), (15), and (18). OB is used on a decent number of holes, but just as many utilize natural OB from thick forests. Hills complement curves frequently, and a controlled curation of shots will be necessary to have birdie looks on many placement par-4s. Most of the par-3s will feel like bonus birdies. It's hard, creative, and satisfying to score on.

Cons:

Scarcely anything.

-Single Biome: It's all thick woods. The only exception is hole (3), and even that one starts with a long woods tunnel from the back tees. Thus, it's a mono-thematic course.

-Beatdown: This course may be the single biggest beatdown of any course I've played. Odds are that multiple discs from your bag will fly a little more understable after your round here. Beginners and rec-level players should stay away. Intermediate players will be recommended to throw from the shorts.

-Long Tee Signs: Would really love to see the same excellent tee signs for the long tees as for the shorts. This, I suspect, will happen sooner or later.

Other Thoughts:

Angry Beaver is a beast. For well-traveled players, it's reminiscent of IDGC Warner (but harder) or the tightly wooded portions of Hornet's Nest. Even though I'm sure it's called Angry Beaver because the trees are angry at you, it can feel like *you* are supposed to become the Angry Beaver after this kind of beatdown. It's solidly Excellent, but lacking the variety and specialness to rise to the phenomenal.

NEW Map Uploaded 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very fair course with high risk/reward factor. This course is not like Nevin in that if you play this one conservatively, there will not be many birdie opportunities; or, bogeys for that matter. Go for it and you run the risk of either pinballing into some tough woods or splashing into the creek that is present on many holes. Hole 8 comes to mind right away with the basket on a slope leading into the creek. Hole 11 is another where the creek guards the basket, requiring an almost perfect approach shot. The woods here are much tougher to play out of than the Eager side; and, the creek, though dry in many spots right now (just because we have not had much rain lately), is deep and nasty. Hole 2, well . . . I know about the pond behind the basket since I have lost many a disk playing the Eager side. As other's have mentioned, that hungry pond is only about 20 feet or so behind the basket, with a rather steep bank into the pond. Chances are, if you overshoot the basket, I hope your disk floats or scuba gear will be needed. And the growth in front of the green does not lend itself to a very large landing zone. All said about the Angry Beaver, if you "go for it" and place your shots well, there are many chances at birdies here.

Because most of this course has a nice tree canopy, it can be enjoyed a bit more on those real hot summer days.

Cons:

Not really a negative; but, on hole 3 the foliage seems to have choked off both the left and right preferred flight paths. It appears that the best way to approach this one is to just go over the trees (some of which are quite tall). Miss the tee shot and the disc will end up in some very tall brush.

The biggest negative on this course is exactly what almost every other reviewer has mentioned in the last few years; and, that is navigation. The course has undergone many changes since its inception and the documentation and signage has not kept up with those changes. Most of the front nine pretty much flows as it always has, until one gets to hole 8, and then the adventure begins. I personally took the risk of playing the course on my own (it was 6:30 AM when I started) and even with all of the notes other players have placed on various websites, had a few problems with the back nine, primarily with holes 13-15. There were enough notes about the new "S" hole 8, could see the new 9 & 12 baskets from the tees, and another reviewer updated the signs for 10-13, which helped immensely.

I have taken the liberty of creating an updated course map and posting it to this site (hopefully the map will be approved since the maps posted there now are very outdated and will get you lost in a hurry). As I played this course for the first time, it also seemed in some ways, the course is becoming neglected. Vandals have taken their toll on some of the signage; and, we could all do a better job of cleaning up the trash. Perhaps this is just me; but the Eager side has had new signage for a few months. It could be a financial thing and new signs are coming; I can only hope this is the case and CDGC is not abandoning it. We already lost Hornet's Nest, don't want to lose another.

Other Thoughts:

The front nine has better chances of losing a disc in deep brush. If you place a disc in it, please be midful of snakes and ticks as you look for it. The back nine, with the exception of the 18th, is pretty much all wooded.

I am going to go out on a limb during this review. I was once critical of the CDGC on a review and got roasted over the coals for it; mainly because I did not word things well, and because everyone's sensitivity meter seems to run way too high nowadays. We here in Charlotte have hosted the World Championships and have many players of all abilities taking road trips to our area just to play our wonderful courses. Elon provides the opportunity for someone to play 54 radically different holes in one location. If we are to be sensitive, this is an area where we should all direct our energies. If CDGC is going to link to DGCR, it must be mindful of keeping the documentation up to date, lets all do a better job of picking up after ourselves, and keep our courses the best around. It is always the little things we take for granted. Most of our courses are free to play. I just came off of a road trip where most of the courses I played required a fee to play (at least the nicer ones did - maybe the fee is one of the reasons the courses are nicer; not sure).

Pros:

Great course that offers a great deal of challenge and requires a shot from your whole bag. Love this course and how deep in the woods it is. You can really disconnect and play some solid disc golf. However you must be precise or you can be getting bogeys every hole pretty easily.

Cons:

Course upkeep. I have been going every week recently to clean trash and I am the one who wrote on the 8 tee pad where the pin is actually located... I have also cleared dead trees that were just making the course unattractive. I did not however make any whole easier or harder...just routine upkeep.

Other Thoughts:

Angry Beaver 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging, tight woods course. Not too long, but long enough to give every player a challenge. Clean course, nice tee pads. Benches or chairs at nearly every tee. Good variety of holes, from a couple ace-runners to a couple 800' par 5's that will truly test your accuracy and distance. Well rounded course that needs to be played a few times before truly appreciating it!

Cons:

What they did to hole 8 is a travesty. The original 8 was a great par 4 down the creek. Adding another 200' and a curly-Q with a ridiculous mando doesn't make the hole any better - just longer and more frustrating. Signage is still not correct on the back 9, and can get a bit confusing if you are playing the course for the first time.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very "mental" course. It will challenge you and if you are hacking thru the trees hole after hole due to a lack of driver control - you will truly understand why it's called the "Angry Beaver". If you can avoid the head games, keep your focus and play smart, this is a very fun course and one that will keep you coming back for more!

Soaked by the Angry Beaver 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my favorite course in the Charlotte area but first a disclaimer: I live next door to Elon so convenience has some bearing on my opinion. It's a very difficult course but is generally a fair challenge. I play it about 5 times per week and never get tired of it. Lots of variety from (a few) short birdie holes to several "just-get-me-outta-here-with-a-bogey" holes. Very heavily wooded- might want to leave the soft plastics in the trunk. A series of creeks wind through several holes along with several retention ponds. Moderate elevation changes but nothing of major consequence. It's long, no way around it. For a reasonably adept 4-some I would expect 2-3 hours to get around the loop. Multiple tees on numerous holes give you a lot of options for changing it up as desired. Trash cans, benches and the like are adequate and there are restrooms in two of the buildings at the park. One of the only courses that you won't hear people worried about their car being robbed! The adjacent short course is nice for a leisurely warm up or to lick your wounds after a rough day at the Angry Beaver. Great community of regular players, too!

Cons:

The only hole I take issue with is #8. It's not that long for a par 5 but there is a creek that will make you question physics as it eats up every shot that isn't thrown perfectly. You can miss dead right and somehow go OB left. There are three 90+ degree turns on the hole with a sucker pin above another creek to finish you off. I've seen a lot of decent players take a 5-over par on this hole alone. A few holes demand identical shots even if the holes appear different to the eye. You'll need your anhyzers if you are a RHBH thower. The course can also be very, very muddy after a good rain.

Other Thoughts:

It feels like you need raw distance here, but that is a mistake. This course will heavily penalize errant shots so focus on accuracy instead. Watch out for snakes in the warm months- there are a tons of them out here! Mostly harmless, of course, but will still scare you when you realize a copperhead or moccasin is at your feet!

Long, sometimes tight, mostly wooded. This course has challenges for all! Accurate pars, IMHO. One of the tougher courses in the Charlotte Metro...

Cons:

Multiple curves sometimes called for, which I, as a moderately skilled amateur, get beat up on. I can throw a hyzer flip with decent distance, but some of these holes require a pro arm to par. #5 in particular stands out for that. Again, this is just my opinion.

Other Thoughts:

I truly enjoy this course. I don't score here nearly as well as I should, but I love it as much as any course in Charlotte.

Upset Beaver 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

With all the courses we have in Charlotte this is definitely a gem in the crown.
I'll call it the Upset Beaver now however because it's been shortened for the World's event. It was definitely Angry before, but the shorter holes increase the pace of play and provide some Anger management.
The first 3 holes give you a chance to get under par. After that, it's up to you to score because the course gives nothing.
Most of the course plays in the woods so you'll need to hit lines, mostly with midrange discs. I can't remember a single hole where max driver would have been appropriate. That said it's a great challenge.

Cons:

This is petty but there are not benches on every hole. I'm getting older so this is now something I notice.

Other Thoughts:

A great venue for everyone when you consider both the Eager and Angry Beaver.

Great Course, very fun, a nice mix of long and technical holes. I liked how this course had long holes mixed with more technical holes instead of the front 9 being technical and the back 9 being the long holes

Cons:

I was too beginner to throw this course. Intermediate and above should play this course. The only things I didn't like about the course were the briar patch on 2 bc I threw it right in the briars, and how long the course was when I played it. Angry but not Furious 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great test of skill and tests virtually every shot in your bag.
- I like a course with true par 4's (and a 5 or two), not just long par 3's disguised as 4's.
- Forces you to think before you throw.
- The terrain is nice and varied, not too hilly, but provides a good change of elevation for many holes.
- Good use of the water that 's around and through the course. Makes you think about where your shot will fall out to.
- Very fair for lefty's and righty's.
- In a nicely maintained park in a good area of town.

Cons:

Just a few cons that could be overcome.
- Tee signs as mentioned before; the tee signs are creative but hard to read. Makes the course more difficult to navigate that it should. Hard to read distances and have no picture/diagram of the hole.
- tee pads were nice and consistent but a little short
- very few opportunities to throw a full driver. mostly fairway and controlled drivers or mids. I took all of my max drivers out of the bag for a second round.

Other Thoughts:

I played the angry beaver as part of a one-day tournament. Was my first time on the course. Playing the morning round blind was very difficult. This is definitely a course where you benefit from playing it multiple times.

I went into expecting it to be tough, it was, but not unfairly so. Definitely worth a trip to play. Also play the short course as a warm-up.

Cons:

it can get sloppy during the winter, and when the creek is flowing, discs will disappear. there are still alot of tripper stumps in the fairways. has some benches and trashcans, but it could use some more

What a course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Large concrete pads, new baskets, unique and creative layout. This course has a bit of everything and it is extremely challenging for a beginner/intermediate player like myself. It will test your resolve midway through the round or sooner. The first 3 holes are benign and fairly easy to par or even birdie. Then the pain begins but in a good way. I always played the eager beaver course in the same park thinking of how much better I have gotten but once I played this one I ate a big piece of humble pie. Nonetheless you can really hone your skills on this course because it seems to have every situation imaginable and it's easy to get in trouble if you're not precise on most holes. Distance really comes into play on 2 holes but precision and placement is the skill that is required when playing this course. There are a lot of courses in the Charlotte area and I haven't played all of them yet so I am probably not the best person to say this, but it is the toughest course I have played by far. The challenge though makes you want to come back.

Cons:

Almost too technical at times and sometimes it feels like you just have to be lucky to get a good score. Course still needs to be broken in. Hole #2 needs some clearing out. You basically have a bunch of thick shrubbery starting a few feet in front of the tee pad and maybe 15 feet from the basket and in the summer it's a pain to get through.

Other Thoughts:

As mentioned above it is very challenging and to me that is definitely a pro. If you learn how to get around this course I'm sure you can thrive in most courses in the area. Would not recommend if you're just going out to get a quick round in. You have to have a good strategy for each hole and not just toss the disc around. Be ready for a battle!

ANGRY!!!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The Angry Beaver layout provides a wealth of quality disc golf. Experienced players will be challenged to hit tightly wooded lines, avoid artifical OB, and cannon the occasional long open shot. Even players without big arms can score well here, as the fairways often place a premium on good placement over raw distance in order to set up the next shot. Artificial OB is everywhere. Keep an eye open for the red-tipped fence posts: they denote OB. A wide variety of hole length throughout: everything from 150' ace runs to crazily-shaped 800'+ monsters.
-Water comes into play nicely in several spots in the form of both a pond and small creeks. #2's green is a small hill with the pin at the top and a pond lurking behind for over-zealous tee shots and rollaways. #8, one of the course's standout holes, winds through woods with a stream comprising the left side of the fairway. #18 is a monster 800'+ hole that twists and turns before arriving at a pin position protected from behind by a creek.
- Slight to moderate elevation comes into play very nicely throughout, often in concert with water in order to provide some excellent risk/reward (especially on #'s 2 and 18).
- Good concrete tees. The signage, although hand-drawn, is more descriptive than most signage I've encountered. All OB is clearly labelled, along with distances, par, and hole number. Painted on various stumps and other markers are random distances to the pin or to a particular area of OB, which helps immensely on some of the longer holes. A few benches and trashcans are scattered throughout the course.

Cons:

- Some conspicuous cutting and stumps remain from the initial course construction. Doesn't really impact play at all, but does detract somewhat from the beauty of the course. I imagine as this still fairly new course beats in, a lot of this will fade from sight.

Other Thoughts:

- For players of lesser skill, the shorter and easier Eager Beaver course on site offers a great alternative to this challenging design.
- Special thanks to Stan and Diane McDaniel for giving my group a tour of the course, along with all the personal insights!

Tough and fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a park with a great mix of open and wooded areas. In the open, there are a few holes bringing water, road, and other artificial ob areas into play for some added challenge. The wooded holes offer some nice lines to hit, with a balance between right and left turning holes.

There is a nice variety of hole lengths here, both in the woods and in the open. The course starts with three shorter mostly open holes, but quickly adds in some longer shots through the woods, and an excellent hole in #5 where a well placed tunnel shot sets you up for an open bomb with lurking ob. The tees are concrete, and are in great shape, and the baskets are still pretty new so they catch great.

Cons:

The tee signs drawn by local kids are a cool idea, and I think they're awesome on the shorter course where you can see all the baskets from the tees. Here, they don't have any information other than distance, and several holes are blind. Some had temporary laminated hole maps, but most were missing and many of the rest were on the ground.

It's too bad the pond and the large mound next to hole 5 couldn't be used more, they're both great features of the property that seem like they could add some fun shots. The course is still pretty new, so it needs a little more clearing and cleaning to feel totally finished, several wooded holes still have lots of stumps and roots waiting to trip you in the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great challenge, and a lot of fun to play, definitely one I would recommend if you're in the Charlotte area. Beginners won't have a lot of fun here, accuracy and distance are both tested with lots of punishment for errant shots. New players would have a better time on the adjacent short course. More experienced throwers will find some great challenges, and enough variety to keep things interesting and to test lots of different parts of your game.

Pros:

This course has almost everything a disc golfer looking for a challenge could want. From short, tight shots to long, open bombs this course will test every shot in the bag. If NC courses suffer from one main issue it is repetitive shot syndrome where one finds themselves throwing the same wooded shot over and over again on the course. Elon Long does not suffer from that at all. The holes are varied and are well placed much like a well designed ball golf course. The long holes and short holes are mixed together to keep you from getting into a rhythm (and to keep your arm from wearing out). The fairways on most of the holes are wide enough to be fair (a couple could use a little widening but nothing major) and most of the pin placements seemed very fair. While there are a few very long holes on this course, don't be discouraged if you don't have a cannon arm, the longer holes still place an emphasis on well-placed tee shots setting up second shots.

The tee pads and directional signage on this course are great. The tee pads are long and level with most allowing a follow through off the pad for people who like that. Signs and arrows pointing the way to the next hole are everywhere and even if there is a bit of a hike between holes there is always something letting you know where to go (going from hole 3 to 4 there is an arrow spray painted on the road, that was the only sign I had trouble finding).

Most every basket has a legitimate green around it so if you get within 30' or so you should have a putt at the basket.

Cons:

The biggest con by far for me was the tee signs. I hope that in the near future they will be getting good tee signs in with a map of the holes on them. All of the tee signs right now are drawings done by the local school where the kids interpreted the hole number and drew their interpretation (hole 5 has a dollar sign, hole 8 has a spider, etc). The short course also has this but is not a problem there since one can see the baskets from the tees. On the longer holes of the long course, the only way one can really figure out how to play the hole the first time is to walk almost the whole length of the hole. A nicely done set of tee sign would go a long way to improve this course and make it much easier to play.

A couple of the baskets were positioned poorly and much too close to OB and really prevent you from taking a good run at the basket. Hole 4's basket is probably only 15' from an OB stream and hole 9 is also about 15' from an OB stream on a hill that slopes towards the stream. Speaking of hole 9, that was really the only hole I didn't like on this course. It plays as an "island" green where one must retee at least once before going to the drop zone near the island green so you would be laying 5 by the time you get to the drop zone. That is not, by itself, an issue but with how many trees guard the island green the hole becomes some what of a crap shoot off the tee and there is a lot of luck in staying safe on the tee shot.

Finally: watch out for stumps and roots. This course is littered with toe busters. The parks and rec department would be well served to go out there for a day with a stump grinder and take those bad boys out.

Other Thoughts:

Am pads for people who want a challenge between Elon Shorts and Elon Longs would be nice.

Hole 5 had a stump in front of the tee pad with a sign on it giving the distance to an OB creek. That was super useful and I loved that little feature. It is something one sees on ball golf courses quite a bit and I would love to see more of on disc golf courses that feature a lot of OB.

Once this course gets some foot traffic, it will really improve because there are still a lot of small limbs and twigs just off the fairway.

Pros:

A rising star in the south end of Charlotte, Elon Park - Long Course, A.K.A. "The Angry Beaver" will test all attempting to conquer it. This 7,000' stroll through the woods has moderate elevation, defined fairways.

There is a practice basket on the opposite side of the parking lot, and essentially an entire practice course starting and ending very near tee #1.

The AB is equipped with large concrete tee pads, laminated tee signs and seating at a few points along the way. Limited trash cans on the course, but there is one that is well placed that can be accessed from 11-14. Decked out with beautiful Innova DISCatchers, double layered chains and deep baskets. There's something about white-rimmed baskets that let you know you are playing against a Charlotte area beast.

Beautiful wooden bridges/walkways have just been added, keeping you from having to walk through marshes and over creeks. Many have just been added and is very much appreciated.

This course does offer variety. Holes 2-3 and 18 stay out of the woods(with the exception of the errant shot), the rest treads through some fairly dense woods. Hole 1 is a typical starting hole, 2 and 3 will give first timers a false sense of security. Drive accuracy is a must-have for a good round. Fairways are defined and fair. Underbrush has been well maintained in most areas, but there are plenty of leaves for a disc to slide under.

Dispite other's reviews, I believe this course is pretty fair when it comes to LH, RH, BH, FH. There is the stretch of holes (14-16) that will favor the RHBH player, but is immediately put into perspective by a punishing #17, which is nearly imposible to get near the basket from a tee shot unless throwing LHBH or RHFH. I believe the course balances itself out in the end.

Its location in the Elon Park Disc Golf Complex is a huge pro. 36 holes on the same area of land, with the short course having two sets of tee pads?! You can make an entire day out at Elon. Play the Short Course for a little warm up, or play it after the Long Course to help yoursel feel a little better after getting beat down by the Angry Beaver.

Cons:

There are as always a few cons, not necessarily in my eyes but would be for your average player.

There is ample opportunity to lose a disc on The AB. Hole 2 has a lake directly behind the basket, and a dense pit of woods/brush which pretty much run from tee to basket. I advise using a "throwaway" or floating disc for this one. Hole 5 has a "mudpuddle" laced with sawgrass located 300' from the tee. Send it in there more than 10' away from the edge you probably wont even see it, and if you do good luck getting it back. There are a few other spots that play along the creek where, if playing during the wet season will swallow your disc and have you looking for a long time.

There might be a shortage of bench locations at the current time at the AB. Normally not a huge deal, but with the course being a bit lengthy it would be nice to sit down a few more times than we normally get to. A few more trash cans might also be a good idea, but players seem to be courteous and are carrying their trash to the next trash can.

Its time for the laminated tee signs to be replaced by something more perminant. Tee signs are very descript, showing hole number, map, distance and par. The only problem is the marker is fading on alot of the signs and are getting tough to read. Nothing fancy necessary, just something that will remain for years without having to keep up on it.

IMO, more perminant tee signs, and the addition of a few more benches and trash cans along with a little more breaking in will make this a 4.5 disc course.

Other Thoughts:

Course traffic is good enough to continue the breaking in process of this new course, but not crowded enough to keep you waiting all day. The distance of the course can keep groups spread out.

There is alot of scenery here, and then some not so great parts that still could use a bit of cleaning up. There is alot of cleaning up of trees that had been removed to create the course, along with some sections of fencing which exists from whatever activity used to happen on this section of land. You should still be watching where you step and reach, even though there might only be a couple spots where it is a problem.

This is a project built by one of Charlotte's most dedicated, Stan McDaniel. If you are able to get a bit creative with your shots and hit a few well placed landing zones then you should be able to shoot a decent round out here.

All in all this course is still a work in progress, but is breaking in quite nicely. Faster than I expected. Adjustments may still be made to this course in the future, but its main framework should stay in tact. The course, for the most part, flows quite nicely.

I wouldn't advise anyone not to play out here. But if your idea of fun factor is shooting well then you may not find too much enjoyment on the Angry Beaver, especially the first timers. Enjoy this beautiful course and complex in south Charlotte!

Elon Park Long Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is designed for highly skilled players! I am avid at best. I have not held a disk in my hand for more than a year but I have found this course to be relentless. It is a very new and challenging course. I found that no two shots could really be the same for any hole. Trees, Distance, Water, and Landscape are all factors in shots. More often then not though, it's the distance that makes you say "Woah".

Cons:

This course is marked with blue ribbons for the time being. It is a relatively new course and all signs are Paper that has been laminated over. I got lost playing hole #5 and ended up on #8 then back on #5 again to play it in the correct direction! The blue ribbons became confusing because of the distance to the holes.

Other Thoughts:

Wear BOOTS. This course is truely in the woods. Once you pass hole number 5 you do not see civilization until Holes 17 and 18. Be prepared to spend several hours if you are taking your first trip out. I played with one other person and we tipped the charts at three hours our first time out. This course is brutal on the arms! Take your time in throwing and relax, It's one Big Course! Quite the opposite of it's neighbor (Elon Short).

Pros:

Some very long, very challenging holes. For most of the course you feel like you're pretty far away from civilization and it's a beautiful walk through the woods. Printed maps available next to the parking lot are nice to carry along so you don't get lost/miss a hole.

Cons:

There were a lot of muddy spots when I was there (mid January and it had rained a couple weeks before). Several had stepping stones, but many did not. The course isn't finished yet, so none of the holes had a finished tee pad and many didn't have any markings other than a laminated sign stuck on a tree.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course overall, very challenging and a lot of fun. Also there is a shorter, simple course adjacent to this one which is convenient if you feel like playing for a while. The parking lot is small, but was almost empty when I was there mid-week.
