Woods Wound 'Round the Winery

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A wooded course in a semi-secluded setting north of the bustle of Wisconsin Dells, Fawn Creek Winery has added a fantastic 9-hole course around their complex. Elevation and lines are demanding throughout. All tees except 2 are marked by red balls sunk into the ground showing the hole number, the distance, and the front corners of the teeing area, and by each tee is a small wooden bench. The baskets are MachIIIs in great condition.

No hole can be considered fully "open," and the most open one – hole 6 – has a basket perfectly guarded by trees short and long. The fairway demands a small gap being hit, or a high stall over the trees with a rhbh line.

Elevation combined with woods are the biggest positive factor. Hole 2 is a precise right-to-left line with a scary elevation drop 4ft behind the pin, Holes 3 and 5 are downhill shots with small margin for error if you want a birdie. 4 and 8 are a bit more forgiving in the fairway width but take a step up in distance to compensate for the difficulty loss and throw just enough trees near the pin to make them dangerous.

The flatter holes hold the tightest lines. Hole 1 is a short, 215ft hole, with a long rhbh turnover line being the best option. Hole 9 is something else. 285, slightly uphill, with a leaning fallen tree taking away one tunnel option, leaving a very thin gap just to the right of center about halfway down the fairway, then opening into a decently larger landing area. Getting the right distance/accuracy combo on this would be a spectacular shot.

Several spicy pin placements, 2 was mentioned before, but 3, 7, and 8 have trees within 10ft of the basket. Add the slope on the greens of 3 and 4 and you have one more challenge to contend with.

Cons:

All-natural tees aren't the worst thing in the world, but a detraction, nonetheless. The tee markers for hole 2 were missing completely.

Hole 1 butts up against the road on its left and past the basket, and Hole 5's basket sits about 30ft from the vineyard fence, as does the early part of Hole 6.

Other Thoughts:

Be aware that the parking lot may be busy if the winery is open (sign said Memorial Day to Labor Day).

The greatness of this course stems from the fact that it has very few negatives to count against it. It's set into the land well and has a great design to boot. Well worth a stop if you're vacationing in the Dells, just be prepared to throw some good recovery shots after an inevitable tree kick.

No Creeks, No Fawns... Plenty of Wine

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- picturesque wooded setting alongside vineyard
- private property but course open to the public
- fairly short but includes a few 300+ ft holes
- baskets are basic but serviceable
- mature trees make for a technical course requiring some shot shaping
- area is generally devoted to disc golf away from winery building
- almost no rough; very forgiving except for fallen leaves

Cons:

- almost entirely flat
- low lying areas by vineyard can get pretty muddy
- parking can be a bit tight
- tees are natural with very basic markers
- not a ton of hole variety
- fall/winter leaves can hide discs
- navigation could be a bit more clear
- holes 5 and 6 play too close to locked vineyard fence
- limited amenities: no garbage cans, no practice basket, but some benches

Other Thoughts:

Fawn Creek Winery has been on my list for some time, having never hit it on Wisconsin Dells trips when the kids were a bit younger. This is a nice little course and while somewhat repetitive, is a quick and fun round. It's really an excellent course for not being the primary purpose for the property. I stopped her midday on a Saturday, and the winery was hopping so parking can be a bit tight. However, the disc golf course was generally deserted.

While the area is mostly devoted to disc golf, it's important to watch out for walkers from the winery who can be wandering anywhere. This was a neat, picturesque setting that was probably more wooded than expected, though not immensely technical. Trees are fairly spread out and a few holes play partially out in the open down a very slight slope towards the vineyard. Hole 9 is the most challenging with much thicker trees to sneak through. Due to the tree canopy, there is virtually no undergrowth and discs are easily found as long as they don't end up under leaves.

Navigation wasn't too bad for the most part, but the basket mounted next tee indicators would be kind of nice to make it more clear. Given the tee "signs" are just orbs on the ground marking the natural tees, a few have wandered off and something more permanent would be beneficial. Equipment is just ok here but the baskets catch well enough. The area down by the vineyard, primarily holes 5 and 6, seems prone to wetness but it may just have been early March thaw. If your disc goes over the fence into the vineyard on holes 5 or 6, you may not be getting it back. Perhaps if you asked inside you could get some help. I assume there are bathrooms and garbage inside the winery, but I did not enter.

This is a pretty quick round and isn't anything to go way out of your way for, but it was fun enough and if I was staying in the area I'd play this course again. It's worth adding for a quick stop if you are out bagging, and if you like wine so much the better, I suppose.

Fun, and a great setting. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course set up on a very nice piece of land around Fawn Creek Winery, outside Wisconsin Dells. The course plays around the main building, and alongside the vineyards.

Natural tee pads, but they were all in pretty good shape, and level. Nice touch with the ball golf-esque red markers at the front of the tees, with hole number on one side, and distance on the other. Unique, and interesting. Navigation was pretty intuitive, as well. Most tee pads were close to the last basket, and hole 1 is right in front of the parking area. One tee per hole.

Most of the course plays up and down the forested hill around the main building. The lines are mostly tight and wooded, and very technical. You can be as creative as you want to be here.

There's some short holes, and some medium length hole, if you consider the terrain. Nothing bomber-ish, though.

Brand new Mach3 baskets, and all mounted well and caught well. It was good to see good baskets here. One pin position per hole.

Cons:

While I listed the natural tee pads above, some people may not dig them.

While it's technical and fun, there's really no bomber type holes here.

You'll need to be careful around the first hole. The driveway borders the throwing lane (or may be part of it, depending on your shot), so you'll need keep your eyes open.

We were here on a Friday morning, and it was already starting to get busy. I'd imagine you get some traffic through the course with more visitors.

Careful to not throw in the vineyard on the downhill holes!

Other Thoughts:

This is really a nice little course, and judging by the available land, it could even be expanded. It's quite scenic, free, and just fun. You won't want to play it all the time, but if you enjoy wine and disc golf, it's tough to beat.

Definitely worth the occasional spin if you live in the area, and sorta kinda a destination if you're vacationing in the area (if you don't know, the Dells is pretty much the biggest tourist area in the state). If you don't love the course, at least you can get drunk....but I'd be surprised if you didn't dig it!
