Rising Up to be Among NJ’s Best

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 27, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

`
+ The redesigned layouts with the alternate baskets and tees have broken in nicely. Well worth revisiting if you haven't played since the orange baskets were added. Many of the holes will be familiar - but the newer orange baskets added a whole new dimension to the course.

+ FOD's strength is taking advantage of the two entirely different environments on the property: the first 13 holes are dominated by woods and elevation changes - requiring more touch than power. The remaining 5 border playing fields: they're open, flatter and much longer.

+ The four combinations of tees/baskets now provide a range from 5377' to 7658'. Most of the distance gain is on the open holes around the soccer fields, but the additional baskets creates a lot of variety on the wooded holes. Some of them play entirely differently based on your choice. This is a big help, because the run of holes 9 -12 along the riverbed got pretty dull (short, straight, dodge a few trees). Play the new baskets, and you're throwing a series of doglegs.

+ One of the biggest benefits of the redesign was re-ordering the course so the former #1 is now #6. It's probably the "signature" hole: par 4 with a dogleg right that drops off a cliff with water close behind the basket. You need at least 200' to clear the turn, and the right side is guarded by thick woods all the way up to the turn. A great hole - but pretty intimidating for your first shot of the round
`

Cons:

`
- There are a few quirky holes. Most significant is #2, where you're throwing off a cliff on a U-shaped dogleg left. It's novel, but a bit gimmicky. And as mentioned, the run of holes next to the river are a bit dull if you're playing the original yellow baskets
`

Other Thoughts:

`
~ As much as I enjoyed this course, I would advise avoiding it on days/times when the fields are in use. The fields themselves aren't in play, but these are some of the longest holes and a missed line could carry into groups of spectators/parents. Also, the field section is very exposed and blustery winds seem to be magnified to gale force. The final 5 holes can be that special version of hell where discs travel sideways - or backwards

~ With all the improvements, FOD has really risen up to be among the best playing courses in the State. While it doesn't have the polish of Stafford or the rugged beauty of Greystone, and it's not the beast that The Grove aspires to be or have the reputation of Tecumseh, the variety of the landscape and the multiple ways to play make for real attraction. To me, that variety puts it a bit ahead of fully wooded tracks like Allaire, Doc and Alcyon. If not in your Top 5, I'd bet on it being easily in your Top 10. A small State with an increasing number of excellent courses.

Went From an Nightmare to a Sweet Dream 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 22, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great variety of terrain with open fields and woodsy holes with tight fairways
**Update 2019**

-Proud to say that as of 2019, 12 out of 18 holes now have two baskets: The original yellow, and the new orange pins. No more easy birdies on hole 18 if you go for orange!

-15 out of 18 holes now have two concrete pads in place. Its like a completely new course now, unrecognizable from what it was 5+ years ago when I first wrote a review

Well maintained, quiet, family friendly park in general, as well as the course itself

Reasonable pars set: The par 3s all require finesse, the 4's are great birdie ops, and the course features a par 5 on hole 11 from both pads, as well as a par 5 on hole 8, long to orange basket.

Picnic table with a roof at tee 17

Decent signage. Biggest point of confusion is the transition from hole 8 to 9, across the entrance roadway. 13 to 14 sometimes throws people off as well.

Not too many ticks or annoying insects

Portajohns at the end of hole 10, and on the way to hole 14. Bathroom and water fountain located in building near jungle gym, open up until fall.

A deli/convenience store is located a mile down the road from the park entrance. Inspect dates before purchasing any beverages

A sporting good store, run by a friendly couple that offers a modest but decent selection of discs, is located a mile down the road from the park entrance

Cons:

Pedestrians and athletes that are often present can pose problems on some of the open field holes (#'s 9,10 12,13), as well as hole #1 and #18.

During soccer and lacrosse seasons, hole 10 and 13 may have players and spectators in the middle of the fairway

Water fountain and bathrooms are not near the course

Other Thoughts:

Big improvements recently were made. The course has never looked better or been in more capable hands. I'll give FOD a solid four now. Its amazing to have this as a home course! Please clean up where you can, and crush any cans before disposing them in the bins. TIA!

Really nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix up of field and technical holes. Some really cool holes in general, easy to follow around even if you haven never played there.

Cons:

My guess is that the woods would become really overgrown in the summer...

Other Thoughts:

defiantly worth stopping by and playing if you are in the area.

Played it All 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has a good mix of small and big holes. You need it all to truly score well. From the longs its definitely challenging to get under par.

Easy enough from the shorts to get under.

Cons:

The tee boxes really need work, and the brush is thick in spots --- off the fairway. Sometimes you need to throttle back a bit to ensure accuracy, rather than risk a muff going deep in the brush. This is a good thing, imo. The fairways are wide, if you're deep in the rough you made a poor shot. Not like Tyler where a great drive is determined by 2' either way at 200 feet.

Other Thoughts:

This is a gem of a course in a place where there are few! Try it out, seasoned DG'ers will find themselves traveling to it --- like they might to Jordan, or Warwick. Clearly tops some of the smaller courses like S. Mtn, Alex, etc.

A great challenging course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- One of my favorite courses to play in NW Jersey
- Favorite Holes: 7, 12, 15, 17, 18
- Great workout going up and down hills
- The signs look great
- Great use of elevation

Cons:

- The valley next to 14 and 16 is a challenge but its a bitch if you lose a disc in there.
- No water fountains anywhere in the park
- Couple of holes are right next to some soccer fields, and might be hard to play during soccer season.
- Finding the basket on 11 was difficult my first time through
- The fairway on 16 is very narrow and the deep valley is behind the basket. If you aren't aware of it you could easily double or triple bogie on the hole

Other Thoughts:

The time to play this course is fall and early spring. During the summer months the course can get very wild, and make the course a disc eater. Also it's best to play with someone else so that you can spot each other, since there are a few holes where you are throwing over a ridge or around heavily wooded blind corners.

Almost Perfect 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signage
Easy to navigate
Great variety of shots (left turns, right turns, up hills, downhills)
Variety of length/pars

Cons:

front nine is VERY overgrown.

There isn't so much a fairway as one narrow beat in path. Really could use a weed wack job.

Tees are gravel, short, and don't really allow much of a run up.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This had to be one of the most beautiful courses I have ever played. I loved the mixed variety of woods, elevation, and open holes. Most of the open holes have nothing but green mowed grass! The layout was made in such a way where you were not interfering too much with any other sport activities there. Having a great view of the surrounding hills made it a disc golfer's dream.

Here are a few reasons why I gave this course its rating:

Hole #1 A dogleg right that dipped down a steep hill.
Hole #8 A very challenging uphill hole that made a slight dogleg left.
Hole #9 Just a beautiful wide open Par 3 hole with mowed grass.
Hole #11 A nice long 750 foot bomb that dips slightly downhill to the left.
Hole #13 Again, a beautiful 450 foot straight bomb, mowed grass, and trees on the left hand side.

It was a 5 hour ride home to Boston from this course and it was worth it!

Cons:

I feel the tee boxes need some updating. It is real easy to twist your ankle on some of the tee boxes. If they did that I would almost give it a rating of 5.

Though I did say that the layout does not interfere too much with other events, I would feel a little nervous if I was an inexperienced and had grip lock problems. This is the case with #1 because there are a lot of little kids that hang around the basketball court and if you have grip lock issues... well, you will have a lot of explaining to do.

Filled with dreams... of a good round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 DIScatcher baskets in new, pristine shape. Much of course, especially open holes, is excellently maintained. Mixes lefty and righty holes ( first 4 are lefty but only a few lefty afterwards.) No pinball holes, enought trees and elevation to challenge you as is. Nice usuage of land. Tee signs are VERY nice and there are two tees to each hole ( the longer, "B" tees have no signs but are usually very close to the other tee). Holes are not clustered, they are spread out.

Cons:

The open field holes play close to soccer fields, so if there are games nearby this could cause a hazard. This course really emphasizes accuracy at points, so don't miss the fairway! I kind of wish there was one water hole, none of the holes, barring a very errant throw, deal with the Pequest River nearby.

Other Thoughts:

I truly enjoyed the design of the course with the majority of the land. The 11th hole is 750 feet from the short position, 1000 from the B tee. Some other holes are pretty long too... not a pitch and putt course, so that's a positive. A course I'd recommend, add it as part of an area road trip. Excellent job by Rico and his buddies, creating a nice solid course in an area very devoid of challenging DG courses (Tinicum is almost an hour away and so is Campgaw to the north and east). Way to go!

worth playing both tees 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee pads. No frustration due to the relative easy of navigating the course. Great play environment with good scenery and a great variety in only 9 holes. Holes 8 and 9 are a nice finishing combonation:
Hole 8 was a nice steep uphill shot over 350 feet with the tee on top of a 40ft. hill.
Hole 9 is a downhill 450 ft shot with perfectly placed trees and a hook back to te basket. This is one of the nicest 9 hole courses I have ever played.

Cons:

Only 9 holes. Tee pads are gravel.
Holes 6 and 9 are slightly hard to find for a beginner (for hole 6 go behind hole 5 to a small trail on the left side. For hole 9 turn to your right at hole 8 and head towards the soccer fields, the tee is to the right on the side of the hill.) Hole 9 is worth the search.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course in the winter, the brush in the summer could make the course less inviting. Hole 3 can be a fun challenge for an experienced player or a frustrating impossible shot for beginners, the shot is through a small hole between an arch of brush.
Its a little bit of a walk to get to the first tee, but you will come across each hole with very little difficulty. The alternate holes make the course worth playing again from the second set of tees.

Challenging but Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Elevation changes on 8 and 9 as good as any in NJ. Good work out, not for the out of shape. Potential with more play and some upgrades: unlimited.

Cons:

Will eat discs if you're not careful... reminds me of Tyler state (PA) and others in that regard.

Other Thoughts:

Extremely hard. Probably not for beginners... But also very enjoyable. It rewards the perfect throw and punishes missteps like any good course should.
