Best Course in the Hannibal/Palmyra area

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are a lot of pros. First of all, the maintenance of the course is generally very good, most of the time when I play this course I see the creator out there maintaining it and seeing what needs improvement.
It is a very good mix of open and wooded, you start and end with longer more open holes with tough OB's then the middle is all woods. There is a good variety of angles and shot types, elevation is very well used too.
Very difficult course, with many tough shots through the woods.
They are adding long baskets for some of the holes that make them even more fun and challenging.

Cons:

In the summer, holes 1-3 and 17-18 have corn fields on either side that can make it easy to lose discs. I almost put it as a pro because the corn fields are OB, which makes the longer, straighter holes more challenging, but they can be a little annoying.
There is currently a very long walk from hole 9-10, but Chris (creator of the course) is putting in 9 more holes and some of them are going in that walk, so this con is getting addressed.
Not very stroller/small child friendly with some of the walks through the woods. There's a steep slope downhill and some bumpy paths that make strollers difficult.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, I love this course! The cons are pretty tame all things considered. There's not much I dislike about it, would highly recommend to anyone in this area or passing through.

Orange Flowers

Pros:

At the north of Flower City Park lies a wooded track with some very unique holes. The challenge is high if you want to score low.

Creature comforts are all here, descriptive tee signs, sufficient concrete tees, orange DisCatchers on each hole, plus a bonus long basket in white on 12 and 18. My biggest praise is for the work done on the elevation transitions in the woods, there are rubber mats laid to help with grip on the steep up- and downhills, though I'm not sure how functional they'll be if wet. Large signs pointing between holes are very helpful even with a map.

The course designer(s) obviously had a lot of fun with the wooded holes. Shot shapes through the trees differ greatly (flex lines, doglegs, frozen rope straight, long slow hyzer) while using elevation to their advantage. 6 and 8 are tough uphill shots that have to keep straight, while 7 and 11 dogleg downhill. 9 is my favorite in the woods. Your two options: a skinny left gap that needs a hard right finish, or a wide left gap which needs to hyzer all the way to avoid the outside trees, but get slowly moving to the left early while getting the distance needed. Oh, and if you don't clear the gorge you'll likely roll back down the hill and be left with a 70ft uphill approach. It's one of the most challenging short holes I've played in a while.

Basket placements are one of the best features. Besides the rollaway risk just because of the elevation on 5, 6, and 8, hole 2 on the hillside will almost certainly leave you with a putt from weird elevation. 9 on the edge of the gorge is a scary putt, and 10 has a great backstop of trees unless you go long and are blocked by them. 15's basket is tucked into the trees to add that extra bit of challenge.

Actual tunnel shots! 12 is a hard left tunnel, 14 is a short but tight tunnel both left and right, and I've already mentioned 9. 10 and 17 both have a tunnel on the second shot which is long enough that your first shot needs to be placed very well to have a run at the birdie. Tunnels with real ceilings are tough to get right, and they do it here.

Cons:

The open holes are all bordered by plants just tall enough to make finding a disc a pain. The real unfortunate part is there's so many of them. Even with one side bordered by trees 2, 3, 10, and 18 have the same stuff as 1, 16, and 18 have on both sides... those three are awful holes since they're also all over 600 feet long. It would be a much smaller issue if not for the sheer number of holes affected, especially when it could've been avoided...

There's a long walk between 9 and 10. It's easy to follow, you won't get lost, but there could have been 2 or 3 holes in here and you'd avoid the open section of 10 altogether. Heck, route the holes back to where 11 starts and you could cut off the deadwood 1, 15, 16, 18 as well. Maybe the tree chopper budget ran out?

The tee signs of 1 and 13 are broken off and gone.

Newer players will likely find the rough in the woods, and it is very rough to go into and find a disc. Maybe take the newbies to Black instead.

Other Thoughts:

The blind basket on 13 is visible as you walk up the path from 12, but you do have to backtrack to the tee a bit.

There are several second pin spots that were in use, however they weren't on the signs (yet?).

A certain photographer in the area likes using the fairway of 13 as a photo spot, so hopefully that's not going on while you're here. Yes, I'm in some wedding photos taken on the fairway of 13. No, we didn't hold anyone up.

There aren't that many huge cons on the Orange course, it's just one massive con that repeats itself over and over. Fortunately, those holes are still a major test of accuracy so you can look at that as the silver lining, and the rest are very high-quality, making the course worth it if you're up for the skill challenge and potential lost discs (R.I.P. orange Wraith #3).
