Warm-up/cool-down, family, intro course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 16, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Short enough for any able-bodied adult disc golfer to make a bunch of pars and birdies. Nice warmup or cooldown to the big course at Clark's Run. The 47-foot no. 2 means pretty much every adult of any skill level has a birdie. Even a little kid is going to make the par 3! Encouraging! This is a perfect course to introduce someone to disc golf who has no concept of the sport. Being a wooded little course, it's distinctly more interesting than a totally-open course and gives the would-be dolfer a taste of what they might be playing in their future on longer, more-challenging courses. In addition to trees and bushes to get around, there's also rolling terrain.

Cons:

Not so well maintained with a good deal of leaf debris. On the north edges of the property, some tough rough with fallen trees and branches. Unless you are doing something crazy, you should not be in this. But for newbies, they might get into it by throwing too hard. Tee markers are only short white blocks in the ground. Said for no. 5 are missing. Take a picture of the course map from the kiosk so you know where to go.

Other Thoughts:

Nice companion to the killer course at Clark's Run. If you did poorly there, you can play here afterwards to repair your ego. If you want to introduce someone to a disc golf course that offers some interest without too much challenge, this is a good one. Do note the $5 suggested donation if you don't have a local club membership or are not associated with the Freedom Center itself. Play both courses for your full money's worth (smile).

Fun little putter/beginner/warm-up course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 29, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice little 9-hole course set in semi-open woods. Well suited for introducing new players to the game. I have taken people who have never played disc golf here and they had fun.

For more experienced players, this is fine place to loosen up your arm before playing the challenging Clark's Run - Main course. Grab a couple of putters, maybe a midrange if you are not a long thrower. For me, a couple of the holes are reasonably challenging to deuce with a putter.

Enough trees so you have a line (or lines) to hit, but not so many that the course is overly punishing for new players. Mild elevation changes on a few holes. Mostly righty backhand lines but a couple of sidearm-friendly holes.

Usually not crowded. I play here often and generally have the course to myself. Trashcan by the kiosk.

Update: Brick teepads on every hole as of May 2024. Pads are standstill-sized but level and adequate for a short course like this. I bumped my rating from 2.0 to 2.5 when teepads were installed.

Cons:

This is a short, 9-hole course. The three longest holes are around 200' but two of them are uphill so they play a bit longer. Most holes are in the 100-150' range.

Undergrowth can get thick in the summer, making disc loss possible if you land off the fairway. Not a problem in cold weather months, and the club does a pretty good job of keeping undergrowth at bay during the growing season.

Navigation is a little tricky the first time playing the course. Hole 2 in particular is easy to miss - turn right and backtrack a bit after finishing hole 1. Maps available on DGCR or UDisc will get you around the first time.

No tee signs, just low white tee markers with the hole number. Tee markers are occasionally difficult to spot. One tee and one basket per hole.

Other Thoughts:

I usually play a quick round here before taking on the challenging main course. Warming up here has probably saved me from losing a few discs in the pond (hole 2) when I play the main course.

If you are going to get an ace at Clark's Run, hole 2 at Scattersville is your best chance. Uphill 47' jump putt with the basket tightly guarded by two trees.

The hole 9 basket also serves as practice basket for the main course, unless someone else is playing the hole (which is rare).

I enjoy this sort of course, but opinions vary. If you are expecting to bomb your drivers you will be disappointed. For the traveling player, this is a quick bag about 30 minutes north of Dulles Airport, just off Route 15.

There is an indoor bathroom but it is not close to the course. Take the road past the first two holes, continue past the basketball court, and look for a red building on the right.

No alcohol, no smoking/vaping, no drugs. Please abstain for the short time it takes to play this course, and please do not do anything that will get the course pulled.

Recommended $5 donation to play this and the main course. Drop box at the kiosk or PayPal. Or if you are local join the club and play for free.
