Pros:
Nice little 9-hole course set in semi-open woods. Well suited for introducing new players to the game. I have taken people who have never played disc golf here and they had fun.
For more experienced players, this is fine place to loosen up your arm before playing the challenging Clark's Run - Main course. Grab a couple of putters, maybe a midrange if you are not a long thrower. For me, a couple of the holes are reasonably challenging to deuce with a putter.
Enough trees so you have a line (or lines) to hit, but not so many that the course is overly punishing for new players. Mild elevation changes on a few holes. Mostly righty backhand lines but a couple of sidearm-friendly holes.
Usually not crowded. I play here often and generally have the course to myself. Trashcan by the kiosk.
Update: Brick teepads on every hole as of May 2024. Pads are standstill-sized but level and adequate for a short course like this. I bumped my rating from 2.0 to 2.5 when teepads were installed.
Cons:
This is a short, 9-hole course. The three longest holes are around 200' but two of them are uphill so they play a bit longer. Most holes are in the 100-150' range.
Undergrowth can get thick in the summer, making disc loss possible if you land off the fairway. Not a problem in cold weather months, and the club does a pretty good job of keeping undergrowth at bay during the growing season.
Navigation is a little tricky the first time playing the course. Hole 2 in particular is easy to miss - turn right and backtrack a bit after finishing hole 1. Maps available on DGCR or UDisc will get you around the first time.
No tee signs, just low white tee markers with the hole number. Tee markers are occasionally difficult to spot. One tee and one basket per hole.
Other Thoughts:
I usually play a quick round here before taking on the challenging main course. Warming up here has probably saved me from losing a few discs in the pond (hole 2) when I play the main course.
If you are going to get an ace at Clark's Run, hole 2 at Scattersville is your best chance. Uphill 47' jump putt with the basket tightly guarded by two trees.
The hole 9 basket also serves as practice basket for the main course, unless someone else is playing the hole (which is rare).
I enjoy this sort of course, but opinions vary. If you are expecting to bomb your drivers you will be disappointed. For the traveling player, this is a quick bag about 30 minutes north of Dulles Airport, just off Route 15.
There is an indoor bathroom but it is not close to the course. Take the road past the first two holes, continue past the basketball court, and look for a red building on the right.
No alcohol, no smoking/vaping, no drugs. Please abstain for the short time it takes to play this course, and please do not do anything that will get the course pulled.
Recommended $5 donation to play this and the main course. Drop box at the kiosk or PayPal. Or if you are local join the club and play for free.
