Thank you! drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Played the course today and happened to run into the gentleman up keeping the course. Very nice guy and course was cleared well (as much as the woods would allow) fairways were great but I spent most my time off them hunting for my discs. Short technical fun with a couple straight shots mixed in. Arrows have been added to baskets for ease of finding the next pad

Cons:

Launch pads not marked well (and for holes 4 and 9 there were none available)

Other Thoughts:

The course has been coming along since the last reviews in 2015 and that should be noted. I think it's a lot of fun and I will be back when in/around the Glenville area. Also hole 9 not having a T-box let us have some fun throwing from probably further back than we should and just chucking discs down the hill.

Has potential but in a bad current state 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course at Glenville State College is set off on its own on rec center and college property. There is a pool and playground nearby. This is a shorter course that offers a good mix of wooded and open holes as you travel in and out of the woods. Hole 9 is a fun finishing hole in being a downhill bomb. It felt good to open up after playing the tight, shorter holes in the woods. With the short holes and small space that it occupies, it offers a very quick round if you're in the area.

The rec center area is set off on its own away from the town and is in a peaceful, secluded setting. The course itself is away from other park activities and offers nice views.

It has the potential to offer a fun round as it is in a cool, typical WV backwoods setting that is made for disc golf with its thick woods and steep elevation changes.

Cons:

However, the course is basically unplayable in its current state. The woods holes are unplayable with very high and thick rough all around and through the fairways. In mid-September, it was hard to walk through the woods let alone play the course. I would imagine this gets better in the late fall/early spring, but the rough is still probably pretty bad even when it's most thinned out. The fact that the course is only two years old and already in this bad of shape shows that it's just not a high priority to whoever is in charge of taking care of it.

The tees are natural and signs are scarce, so it can be confusing for where you are supposed to throw from. The layout is a little confusing and navigation doesn't always flow naturally as you have to backtrack a few times. I'd bring a map.

Outside of the town of Glenville, it's pretty out of the way from anything else. You have to make an effort to play here and it's not worth that effort in its current state.

This course has potential, but a lot of work needs to be done to make it playable. Because of the rural setting that it's in and the fact that it's on college property, most of the people who would stumble across the course would be new to the sport. Considering this, the course definitely needs improvement in maintenance and navigation.

Other Thoughts:

I hate to punish a course too much with only one real bad experience. However, since many of the holes weren't even walkable at the time I went, it needs to be judged as I played it and not by the potential that I see. If the course was even just in decent shape, I would bump my rating up a few levels. With it getting such little traffic, I doubt that many drastic changes will be made.

To find the course, drive on Sycamore Run past the playground and shortly after you will see a gravel road going up a hill on the right. The course starts at the edge of the woods at the bottom of the hill. Not worth going out of your way at all to play here in its current state. It could possibly offer a decent round in the late fall/early spring when the rough is died down in the woods.

Uniquely technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a unique 9 hole course that captures the spirit of WV disc golf. Several holes are on benches that allow nice views. Some holes can be challenging for all players, while others offer reasonable ace opportunities. Awesome birding-- cerulean warblers, black-throated green warblers, ovenbirds, pileated woodpeckers, baltimore orioles, blue-winged warblers, yellow-billed cuckoos, indigo buntings, yellow-throated warblers, red-eyed vireos, coopers hawks are all pretty common.

Cons:

Forested fairways still need to be played more to reduce vegetation growth, but expected for a new course. A couple paths can be slick if raining or recently rained. Be aware that the walk from hole 4 to 5 requires minor backtracking and hike up hill and from 8 to 9 requires walking down and around the large horse barn.

Other Thoughts:

I think the main issue with parking is that there's so many places to park it can be confusing if you're not local. Only 9 holes, but loops to make an easy 18. The course is within a mile of the college's firing range...don't let the gunshots get to you! If you have a dog, check out the pond between holes 8 and 9 toward the ball golf course.

Good if your near 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Really fun and seems to get more fun each time i play it as there are always improvements. It can get a bit grown up over the summer but that just ads to the fun. Some holes are challenging and some not so much giving a nice round of 9. You really can't miss it if you drive into the Recreation Center. There are now Carpets on all the Ts and it is mostly nice and dry

Cons:

There needs to be a few more signs to tell you where to go but there are maps at the start to go by. Also needs to have a sign for the start.

Other Thoughts:

If you are anywhere near it, it is worth heading over to play the 9. Probably not worth the trip from the Route 79 as it is 15 miles off the highway...

Glenville Fun?! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

If I lived in Glenville, I'd be glad to have a course at all. This one works. This course is mostly in the woods, and you have to appreciate the work that into tree removal, etc. It's a short 9-hole course, with easy holes (I'm an average player).

Cons:

Hole 9 is oddly disjointed from the others. I was uncertain what was the best way to get to the tee. The tees are muddy, but are marked well enough to be found without much search, unlike many other courses (I also had a map, which was helpful). I stood besid e them a couple times to throw. I was uncertain where to park. Other than using online sources, I would have had no idea where this course was. You'd never know it was there if you driving by.

Other Thoughts:

Again, if I lived in Glenville, I would be glad to at least have a course where I could play/practice, so I can't knock the course too much. It's not worth driving out of your way to play, however, unless you're like me and are trying to play all the courses you can.
