Better Than Average Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a classic park course with acres and acres of well mown grass and hundreds of mature trees. There was virtually no brush or rough to deal with, unless you drive it close to the creek on Hole 18.

While this is a pretty open course, the large trees are put to good use to create gaps in front of the tee pads or obstacles around the baskets. There is a good variety of holes requiring both left and right-turning drives, as well as a few that favor dead-straight. I used RHFH to good effect on a couple of holes that needed a right finish near the basket.

Hole 1 features the most magnificent Live Oak tree that I've ever seen on a DG course. The crown is about 100' wide with branches drooping all of the way to the ground. You don't want to throw a disc under there, but it is a great place to check out. There are several others nearly as large on the front nine.

From the long tees the holes average 367' which is respectable for a city park course. Much of this distance is found in the two par 5 holes (801' and 894') and the two par 4 holes (603' and 516'. Most of the par 3 holes are in the "expected" 200' - 300' range.

There is noticeable elevation on the course, and the long drive back down the hill on Hole 16 was a highlight.

Concrete tees on every hole (with some alternate shorter tees), Innova Discatcher baskets with clear numbers, and decent metal tee signs take care of the important infrastructure. Didn't notice any trash cans or benches.

Cons:

The teepads were decently sized concrete, but had an unusually rough texture and on some holes were not exactly level. Nothing that really threw off my drives, but not optimal.

Tee signs were also adequate, but not from the John Houck shop so didn't present the detailed hole map that I've come to expect on his courses.

Some low areas apparently hold water for an extended length of time. Holes 11 and 16 weren't playable during my round due to standing water. While it has been a wet fall it hadn't rained in the preceding several days.

While I appreciated the challenge that the holes did offer, I felt like I was throwing over open ground for much of my round.

Other Thoughts:

Loved the historic bridge that was relocated into the park and that provided access to the back nine.

While there is no parking lot, ample parallel parking is available along Lions Club Drive, placing you right next to the Hole 1 teepad and the Hole 18 basket.

No water or restrooms to be found.

Great Course with minor cons 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's been 5 years since the last review so I was happy to see the course was still in decent condition with the grass kept mowed and tee pads and baskets in good condition.

Holes are well laid out. Great mix of left, right, and straight shots, long bombs, and tight tunnel shots with most holes possessing different potential lines around trees suiting forehand or backhand dominant players.

Intermediate level course with holes 4, 9, 14, and 18 having shorter alternative tee pads.

Most Texas courses are flat as a pancake so I thought this course makes good use of what slight elevation changes there are.

Benches are scattered throughout the front nine.

Cons:

A few spots didn't drain very well and with a small creek running through the middle of the course, there were tons of giant mosquitos. A few of the trees needed trimming with branches dragging on the ground next to baskets. Several holes are near roads where errant discs could fly. Being near busy roads always makes me self-conscious while I miss easy putts.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This was the second course I ever played when I started playing disc golf and I thought at the time it was awesome. Some interesting challenge holes here. Interesting basket placements as well as some fine ace and birdie opportunities. The two long holes, 9 and 16 will challenge the best disc golfer as far as drives and getting around the various trees that are in the fairway. The signature hole on 18 that is by the historic bridge includes a toss across the creek that runs in the park. Some great challenges as well as good concrete tees that are grooved for what I presume is good for foot grip in wet weather.

Cons:

Unfortunately, this course has been let go for so long that currently it is barely playable. Weeds permeate the course. A golfer has to look closely where the disc is thrown due to a disc being buried in weeds. I lost a CFR Champion Archangel on hole 9 due to this very problem. I looked for an hour and still couldn't find it. Basket on hole 11 is still not there. No trash cans and no restrooms.

Other Thoughts:

This, to me, is still an awesome course. And could be again when they do a complete mowing of the park. I am afraid they are going to need a hay baler due to the length of the weeds in some places. Mow and replace the basket for hole 11 and this course could be tournament-ready. Great design. Kudos to John Houck.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I like the fact that its an 18 hole course. The concrete T-pads are great to throw from. Trees scatter out all over the course which can make for some heavy thinking before throwing.

Cons:

I can't think of many cons except they placed some more trees on some holes. The course was hard enough as it was but now I think they over did themselves.
