Gunks Disc Golf drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Tough but fun wooded course, mostly par 3s with three updated par 4's

- circle 1 is layed out with tassels, and tee boxes are maintained if they're gravel, with currently 10 tee pads in concrete

-a short tee layout is being tested, as the course is do-able for beginners, yet could be frustrating, i believe what i have seen from the short tees they're placed quite well.

-Beautiful views on the final three holes, and the high grassy area that "plagued" the middle area has been recessed, making wonky drives to the left side findable.

-Easy parking with a short walk to hole 1, and a nice practice putt area. Hole 1 always sticks out in my mind because its such a fun ace run 1st hole, and tapping band on the first hole is always such a fun experience.

-Finally, playing through 13 sneaky wooded holes brings you to hole 14, a swooping left shot perfect for your distance driver to come out and not hit a tree and bomb it. Its the layout of the holes for me.

Cons:

-not a lot of shot diversity. Its tee off straight and hope you dont snag that last tree. and if you do, a light forehand or backhand to settle you under the basket.

Other Thoughts:

- see *hole 5* while not a bad hole, it is frustrating to find a line that is consistent, and while your second shot could be amazing, its the tee shot that makes it tough. This is not a Con however, the simple difficulty of this hole makes me come back to this course because when i have hit that line, there isnt much that feels as good

-Dont expect to play under par your first time playing, or your 7th, its definitly a play for par course.

A Good Course Despite Some “Tweener” Holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Thick woods with a transition to open final holes

+ A handful of really nice holes:

#3 has you throwing over a short valley with a fenced OB area surrounding rusted out farming gear

#7 is a touchy left-to-right with the basket at the bottom of a steep sidehill next to water

#12 is a throw from an elevated tee that has to navigate some tight gaps before reaching an open meadow green

#15 is a great narrow throw high over a creek to reach an open green)

+ A good mix of RHFH holes where the forehand isn't mandatory, but helps a lot

+ The local club has put in amazing efforts just to clearly mark out paths for walking, on and between the holes. So many holes are thickly wooded that it's not always obvious how to walk toward the basket, or where the "fairway" is. Almost any time I was in doubt, I could spot an outline made by downed trees bordering the best way around hazards, through ravines, etc.

Cons:

- The artwork depicting the hole on the signs is oddly uninformative. It gives a general sense of the layout and the most obvious landmarks. But it doesn't include most of the trees - which is a bit of a challenge when comparing the map to the actual heavily-wooded course right there in front of you

- A lot of holes fall into the 'tween' territory of being tough par 3, but soft par 4's. I've seen others here refer to "par 3.5's" and The Gunks has a bunch of them. This is especially true for the closing holes. They're open, but ranging from 400' - 450', so you need a lot of distance to have an inside-the-circle birdie putt. Earlier in the layout, there are some par 3's that aren't quite as long, but uphill, and in the woods. One of them (#6) was changed, indicated by a stick-on "4" covering the original par 3 on the sign.

- Hole #18 stands out as the worst of the 3.5's, made worse because it's the closing hole: 454' par 3 downhill left-to-right with the fairway blocked by a tall and thick screen of trees 100' or so off the tee. The only way to the fairway is up and over the trees - and only the biggest arms can get the height necessary to clear the trees AND make enough progress down the right-turning fairway. But even then, you still have 200' to go on a par 3. I don't know if the screen of trees has grown a lot since the course was laid out, but an all-but-impossible par 3 closing hole leaves a bad taste when walking off a recreational course

Other Thoughts:

~ Course Amenities Summary: The new clean Discacther baskets are great. The tees are uneven rubber mats and the signage is less-than-ideal (see "con" above). Hole-to-hole navigation is easy and very well-marked on trees. Many holes have log benches or donated furniture (and the donated chairs are in unusually good shape). Somewhat cart-friendly, restrooms available in the park. Surprise extra: airfield just beyond the 16th green provides for up-close views of takeoffs, and lots of skydivers

~ a few, sensible mandos - mostly there to protect players on opposite-facing holes, and fans in the bleachers of the baseball field

~ This is a good course that's worth playing. It has some very good holes, several that make you feel a bit lost in the woods, and a few debatable tweener pars. I admire how much work has gone into this course, and it has the potential to be much better with a little bit of pruning, better tees, and rethinking the design of a few holes to make them either 3's or 4's

Underrated and Under-utilized 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As others have said, good shot variety. Good number of left and right turns and a few picturesque straight shots. Mostly very wooded but there are few wide open long holes. Fairly easy to find your way; signage on all tees. Some interesting features to shoot around. Lots of fun, especially after the first few rounds.
Parachuting school nearby, so that's fun to observe.

Cons:

I found 2 discs my first round while looking for my own because of over-grown fairways.
Some moderate pruning and removal here and there of brush/dead stuff would make this course more fun.
Though it wasn't bad when I was there, I could see this course getting pretty muddy, so review the recent weather.
Location is pretty out of the way, for most people I would guess.
Tee pads are not great, and as of this writing, not yet concrete.
Amazed that I didn't see any ticks. Nevertheless, I would recommend long pants.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely seemed under used. In the 3 times I visited over a long weekend, I didn't see a single other person playing. Just having other people around, walking through, etc. would do wonders to sort of break it in.
You should check it out.

50/50 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 20, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Very wide variety, tight wooded holes, uphill, downhill, wide open holes.
-Close to home, very few courses in the area. Mohonk Mountain House is close, but costs money/
-For the front 9, there are sign maps for each hole and usually a sign or arrow pointing to the next hole.
UPDATE March 2018 all holes have sign maps!!!
-Well kept, little to no garbage, trails on the holes and between holes

Cons:

-Gets very slick when it rains, we picked a poor day to go though.
-Had a little trouble finding first hole, it's not near the parking lot when the gate is closed. First tee is right near the entrance gate.
Update: there's a sign in the parking lot pointing towards hole 1
-Played 5/20 and the course was in pretty bad condition. A lot of overgrown holes. 12, 16-18 are pretty much unplayable because the grass is so long. It seems like you can find some good times to play in the winter/ fall when it's dry and the plants are dead. From my experience, the spring/ summer months tend to be when the course is in the worst conditions. Kind of a 50/50 on whether you're gonna get a course that's been maintained.

Other Thoughts:

I like that there's a course near me now. I'm from Wallkill and never found it worth it to go to Mohonk for a $25 day pass. Beacon and Warwick were the closest options. I love Warwick but it's a hike.

Played today (3/24/18) and the course played very well! The course was dry, no overgrown brush, no snow left on the ground. Besides holes 16-18 in the open, mud wasn't really an issue. The course has clearly seen some love and that's great to see. Tee signs used to only include holes 1-9 and now they all have them and there are a few next hole signs which make the course play smoother. Definitely try to get there right after the snow melts and dries up, because that gets rid of the overgrown grass, weeds and brush that was a big issue in the past. 4-4.5/5 for today, no doubt.
