Fun course at a brewery!

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 31, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Long turf tee pads
-Beautiful tee signs
-Brand new discatchers with very nice custom red bands
-Variety of technical shots required
-Simple but not too easy short pads
- Difficult to score long pads, that aren't too gimmicky
- Located on a brewery
-Only $3 for 18 holes
- Great view of Tuckahoe creek on hole 3

Cons:

- Common of Richmond but not a whole lot of room to air out a long drive
-Tons of mayflys
-Long walk from hole 9 back to your car
-lots of fresh stumps to trip on

Other Thoughts:

I went and tried out the brand new Hardywood Brewery course and had a great time! This course was built by the same people who build True Timber, and it is fairly obvious. A lot of the same design elements were present especially with the tee pads and signs. There are 2 sets of tees on 9 holes that have beautiful brand new discatchers. The short pads were very short (around 150-300) but they were still techincal fun shots. I shot -5 with 2 missed C1 putts so fairly simple (950 rated player who's home course is UR). The back 9 on the other hand was pretty difficult to score. There were some pretty tight gaps, but nothing too gimicky and even a par fun 4. I shot even, with no birdies or bogies and a missed C1 putt.

Since it was a Monday morning not many people were there and the brewery wasn't open yet but I've heard its been very busy in the opening couple of weeks. It is pretty cheap for a pay to play course, and its an added benefit you can get drinks there when its open.

I'd say the best holes were 1, 3, 4 long, and 6 long. The most boring holes were 2 short, 6 and 7 short. The hardest were 2 long, 3 long, 4 long, 8 long, and 9 long.

1. One is a open down hill left to right shot that can be forehand or backhand. The long placement is a ton of fun
2. Two is wooded and an easy zone 170 foot uphill shot, but the long is a very tight and adds a much higher level of difficulty. Ok hole
3. Low ceiling down hill shot that hooks left at the end. The mouth of the green is very small, and if you go deep or are short you womnt even have a putt. Overlooks Tuckahoe creek, probably the signature hole
4. Short is a fun 260 foot valley shot the ends slightly right, RHBH or forehand are both viable. Long is a 500 foot difficult par 4 that has a very tight gap off the tee. Even if you throw a good first shot doesn't mean birdie is guaranteed.
5. Another simple downhill valley shot. Shorts is a backhand hyzer, the longs is a forehand hyzer although there is a backdoor backhand gap. Not a terrible hole, the dangerous green on a mound and the downhill make its it fun
6. Shorts is a super straight 170 foot shot through a tunnel, longs is just pushed back 150 feet, and its an open shot till you get to the the short pad. Both are fun, the shorts is a good ace run, the longs lets you throw a driver straight
7. Stock forehand on shorts and longs. Fairly standard short course type of hole.
8. Shorts is 170 foot straight tunnel shot that barely finishes left. Longs is super harder and probably the most gimmicky because it is almost a poke and hope.
9. Is a dogleg left valley shot that is pretty tight. Longs is just pushed back feet. The walk up to the basket has a pretty view of the brewery sign Hardywood and a good way to end your round

Overall a very enjoyable course. I'd say its a 2.5-3 shotwise but the amenities like the pads, signs, and baskets are so nice I bumped it up to a 3.5.
