High Bridge Park

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are a variety of shots here and the lines are good. This is an older park style course and you will need a variety of shots in your bag in order to score well here.
Orange directional arrows on the baskets to assist with navigation.
As is with many park style courses this course is mostly flat, so for those that don't like elevated courses, this is a good option.
Many of the tee boxes got a fresh coat of spray paint upon my visit and there were several holes that had multiple tees.
The distances were balanced well with short, moderate, and longer holes all accounted for.
Dog leg L and R shots, as well as low ceiling shots are present too.
The trees have some beautiful colors in the fall.

Cons:

The tee pads are a mix of rubber mats, old asphalt, old concrete, etc. Some of those have seen some better times. The rubber pads are uneven in spots and grip is an issue. Not terrible but could use improvements.
The baskets are older Innova Discatchers and some will complain about them, I didn't have an issue and they did their job. They've had some work done to the pans and have been fortified with some decent welding to help with putts from falling out.
The signage(what is left) isn't accurate and depicts another layout. I'd guess that the course has had a slight re design over the years.
The transition from 7's basket to 8's tee pad is long and slows down the flow of the round.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a solid course. Its a fun older course that has good lines. I didn't feel unsafe playing here at all, I could see evidence of homeless camps across the creek etc, so I can see where that might be an issue. This course was decently busy on a Thursday evening but not super crowded. The locals were friendly and let me play through so no issues there.
IMO this is a good warm up course and a great compliment to Camp Sekani Jamboree across town. Those two course compliment each other really well as High Bridge is more flat and open and Camp Sekani is more elevated and wooded.
If you are in the Spokane area and like park style disc golf, then give this course a try. She's an oldie but still a goodie!

Pros:

+Very fun layout, which ultimately is the most important factor.
+Good mix of hole distances, as well as BH and FH tee shots. Also, many holes have essentially two main gaps to choose from, giving you multiple ways of playing the hole. It felt like a course that would not get stale if played often.
+Big mature trees everywhere. The canopy of the pine trees were generally high enough up that the limbs weren't in play on most holes, but there are lots of large tree trunks splitting fairways that must be avoided.
+Straddles the line of "beginner friendly" and "fun for advanced players" well. Due to the high canopy and minimal rough on the course, there aren't a lot of places to lose a disc. But the layout and variety hits the spot for more experienced players, too. Seems designed with AM1/AM2 level players in mind.

Cons:

-This course is pretty rough in terms of the infrastructure trifecta - tee pads, baskets, and signage. The non-concrete pads are definitely ready for a refresh. Baskets are still functional, but clearly have seen better days and a few of them are sporting homemade welding to extend their lifespan. Course layout (both in terms of uDsic and what the locals play) doesn't match the old signage.
-Lots of visual indications of homelessness and drug use. Tents, trash, etc. Not somewhere I would take my kids to. And probably not somewhere I would hang out after dusk.
-A few holes use old concrete roads as fairways. This is relatively minor, but if you like keeping certain discs pristine then you may want to bring a couple backups to absorb the roadrash.

Other Thoughts:

High Bridge looks like a course that probably used to be really nice. There is old infrastructure (roads, areas that look like camp spots) that has been abandoned by the city and absorbed by the disc golf course. I am curious what this park looked like in its heyday. As it stands now, it's a fun course that could be great if the city made a concerted effort to clean the park back up.

Listen to the Trains Go By... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This unusual course is built in an old neighborhood, with some of the holes using old asphalt roads for the fairways. Other holes are in more natural areas.

Good variety of hole lengths from 180' out to 472'. Some holes feature modest uphill and downhill drives, but the course is nowhere near the "Very Hilly" designation shown in the Course Details.

Hole 15 is an interesting downhill drive to a blind basket. Hole 9 is a short uphill drive to a tricky basket placement.

Some of the "old neighborhood" holes have thickets of small pine trees (10' - 15' tall) that have regrown in patches and create quite a challenge. If your disc fades into one of these areas you'll have an obstructed shot to the basket for sure.

It is nice to be able to park near Hole 1 or on "A" Street near Hole 11. Being able to access the course before the gates are open is a plus.

Cons:

The course has a very worn look to it. The baskets are tagged to the point that you can hardly make out the yellow band on some of them. The tee signs are also tagged up pretty thoroughly.

Some of the rubber teepads are chewed up, but it looks like there are some newer replacements out there as well.

Navigation can be a little tricky. The walk from 4 to 5 is long and not obvious at all. You end up crossing a large grassy area in the center of the park to the Hole 5 teepad along the creek.

Many of the holes have two possible basket positions, neither of which is visible from the tee. With no marker on the tee sign you have to walk up on several holes to determine the basket location.

Other Thoughts:

This is a well-used, urban disc golf course. Lots of people, unleashed dogs, graffiti, etc. Most of the other players were helpful and aware of the other disc golfers, but we got behind a hipster couple that couldn't decide if they wanted to make out, train their two (off lead) dogs, or actually play disc golf. I imagine that summer afternoons and weekends could be a trying experience.

Near downtown, near excellent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Location - Close to downtown and several other neighborhoods.
Single use area.
Mixture of hole types.
Suitable for all player skill levels.
Challenging pin placement
Easy to navigate
Mainly quality stairs to climb up and go down.

Cons:

Tee pads are of mixed quality. I prefer concrete to the rubber mats and painted asphalt.
Course is mainly clean, but has a "broken in" quality.

Other Thoughts:

Cool course set in the ponderosa pines, under high bridge on a creek feeding the river just a couple minutes from downtown. You could play 18, float the river and finish with a stop in Brownes
addition very easily. The course has fun holes that do a little bit of everything, making good use of the terrain and space available.

The front 9 starts open with just a little up and down.
Hole 5 is a little funky with the distance you have to walk from the hole 4 pin, which has led lots of players to make their own unofficial tee box from the hill when there is not a group in front.
Holes 6, 7 &8 will challenge your shot making ability in trees. Hole 9 demands a nice rising drive and clean putt or you'll be walking down the hill.

The back 9 are longer and mainly more open. Hole 15 is the gem, shooting over a pine nursery and into the open field. It's weird that 18, which could be a signature treetop height hole, is so short. It requires some restraint!

Overall this is a good course close to lots of neighborhoods (and beer). It's also a great example of disc golf revitalizing and improving some under used park area. The layout and tee pads are OG though and at some point it would be cool for the parks department and SDGA to take a look at upgrades that would make a top class course using the whole area.

Cool Course in Old Town 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

A pretty open course, with a few courses taking you through mildly treed areas.
Multi-purpose park, nice to people there.

Cons:

Since it's a park tucked out of the way and off the beaten path, you see quite a few more bottles and cans laying around due to lack of grounds-keeping / police.

Other Thoughts:

The park is a little run down, could use some sprucing up. Overall, 3/5 because of litter.

HB 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice pads, good baskets, good variety of holes. Good use of existing space in what used to be a very sketchy park that you did not want to go into at all.

Cons:

Some long walks between holes. Several blind shots that can be dangerous. Difficult to navigate without someone who knows where they're going.

Pros:

Course was fairly easy to find.
Open fairways with lots of trees on the edges that can be trouble.
Cool location course is set in an abandoned neighborhood

Cons:

Some fair ways are old roads which makes for a rough landing. A few holes are blind shots but the under growth was minimal.

Other Thoughts:

Very cool setting, would like to know more about the history of the neighborhood that that course is laid out across

Highbridge.. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Slightly revamped course makes for better flow and play. Several elevation changes and technical shots. Just about every hole is different so it makes for a fun and challenging course. Signs and benches have been redone so navigating the course has become much easier. Course layout signs have been placed at holes 11 and 1 to make things much more self explanatory.

Cons:

A couple holes are a bit long or have 90 degree turns in them so making the par 3 can be difficult ( a little more thought could have been put into them). Some blind holes so be sure to keep eyes and ears open.

Other Thoughts:

Be sure to stop and check it out for yourself if your in the area...

Challenging elevated shots! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

A challenging course with a lot of elevation. Has a unique layout/design obviously built by a seasoned disc golfer with a variety of shots unlike other courses.

Cons:

Couldn't figure out where to park. Extremely hard time navigating the course. Lacks decent tee pads an signs.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course could be amazing with a little funding!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good mix of holes left and right. Lots of well used elevation. There is a great mix of short to long holes which should satisfy just about everyone. Hole eighteen was my favorite and is very memorable.

Cons:

The course is a little tough to navigate for the first timer which distracts from the rest of your round. The park gets alot of vandals from the nearby neighborhood.

Other Thoughts:

This park used to be a street block I think and the old roads are still in place. The parking lot is located very near to the bridge where the trains fly by which is where I think they got the name from. All in all a well rounded course that I would love to come back to after playing downriver first of course.

Enjoyed this course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 18, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The variety of shots here were exceptional. With good elevation changes on several. You will throw up down and over several areas. You will need to throw anhyzers and hyzers. Tomahawks and Thumbers will be needed to get you out of some trouble.

While Latah Creek is a small factor, on 6 and 7, it can be played around without much trouble. The course was marked well enough to get around it reasonably well. The tee pads vary from rubber mats to concrete, to asphalt and a couple are painted on areas of old slabs. They have about finished putting in some real nice steps to help get up and down the steep hills. There is a nice picnic and play ground area with a place for the kids to play.

Cons:

The bathrooms are closed on the weekends when its the busiest and there are no water fountains.

The tee for basket 5 is not where the the GPS photo shows it. The GPS photo shows an alt site that has never been done but is used by those that do not want to walk to the real 5 tee. The course map shows the position of 5.

There are no signs to tell you where to park when the park parking is closed. You have to park on A street and start on hole 11.

Other Thoughts:

Highbridge Park was once an actual neighborhood that was torn down. You will see old sidewalks and an occasional foundation. Some of the course uses the roads that are barely passable now. It is an interesting place to be and play.

Some extra direction to the first hole and a sign to suggest where to park and start when the park is closed to traffic would be nice.

I prefer this park to the more popular and yes tougher Downriver because it is less crowded and with the steps it is easier for a guy with a bum left leg to get around.
