Winter Wonderland

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Only 18-holer inside the Saint Paul city limits.

Prodigy baskets in good shape.

Baskets stay up in winter (not true of all MN courses).

Free to play.

All concrete tees in good shape.

Cons:

None worth mentioning

Other Thoughts:

This is the favorite course of one of my regular discing companions. It has a reputation for getting a bit crowded in the summer particularly on weekends. I played it on a weekday with 1" of snow on the ground and found it to be nearly a ghost town with the exception of a few dog walkers and one other player about 4 holes in ahead of me on the back nine who was carrying a shovel and cleaning off the tees. Thanks a million, Anonymous Dude.

The underlying property sits about halfway between an open park course and a woods course, with trees in play on every hole, but no overly pinched tunnels. The front nine plays on the south side of the access road, and the back on the north. UDisc offers a "Winter Layout", which is just the back nine, but all 18 holes are potentially playable year round. Interestingly, the concrete tees on the front nine are larger (approx. 8' x 12') rectangles, while the back nine tees are keystones significantly diminished in both dimensions. Apparently the aforementioned Anonymous Dude skipped the front nine, but traction was reasonable even with 1" of snow, and, as a bonus, someone left a self-service shovel hanging from a branch next to the 5th tee.

You don't need to be a bomber to play Highland Park, but it's no pitch and putt ace runner either. My favorite two holes were #3, a poker straight downhill tunnel losing about 25 feet of elevation, and it's opposite, #5, which is both shorter and wider, but marches you back up the same slope, requiring a somewhat technical steeply inclined drive. The staircase on #5 is much appreciated.

I could see myself playing a lot here if it were a little closer to home. Being the only 18-holer in Saint Paul, it claims the "best of" in that category by default, but I think that it is really just about everything that you would hope an urban park course would be.

Favorite Casual Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Wide variety of holes, with a substantially different front and back 9. Front is more technical, back is longer and more traditional
-Compact design allows for quick rounds, if there's no crowd
-For novices, a great bridge between beginner 9-hole courses and tougher, longer courses
-Cement teeboxes on every hole, baskets are nice as well

Cons:

-7's teebox isn't in a great spot, can get a bit dangerous if not paying attention
-Lack of good signage and trash cans (in the woods)
-Can get very busy at times, and there can be a substantial backup on 3 due to people losing discs in the woods (I've done this)

Other Thoughts:

It's my group's default course if we just feel like playing a round.

Much more fun after the redesign! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Decent mix of shots.-Great for beginners and advanced players who are looking to work on their short/mid games.-Located in a beautiful park.

Cons:

A few of the pin locations are located pretty close to tee pads so keep your eyes open out there, and be sure to let people clear off the tees before you throw on those holes and always yell 'fore' when throws are tracking towards other players.

Other Thoughts:

I had a great time out here. There's nothing too long so if you're looking to throw 350+ foot holes, this isn't the course for you but it's still a great track to practice the short game and hunt that perfect round.

Breathe the free air 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 29, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I played here last year when it was 9 holes - the additional 9 holes make it definitely worth your time if you are visiting St. Paul, which I do often for work and to see family. TCDGFAN's review does a great job of highlighting the major pros and cons.

My favorite aspect of Highland Park is that it doesn't chew me up and spit me out like a lot of other TC disc golf courses. I'm an intermediate player, and will never throw 400', and keeping my drives off trees in heavily wooded courses is a problem.

Most of the new holes are either wooded tunnels, or in the open but with many mature trees. But they are short and so you can save par even on an errant tee shot. They also are either up or down hill. They also have excellent new Prodigy baskets.

If you like to enjoy a round, and score near par, this is a course for you, especially if Kaposia and company kick yer butt.

Cons:

The layout I played may have been temporary, and I hope so. There some really wonky walkabouts from hole to hole, and some holes are total dead-ends, forcing you to backtrack 100%. Some also require you to cross fairways to the next tee. On a busy day that would be interesting....

Also, they have astroturf teepads in the new wooded holes, and they are completely covered in dirt and have offer very poor footing

Other Thoughts:

St. Paul has an 18 hole course with potential. I'd like to see them shuffle the direction of a few hole to improve flow, but it has promise and potential.
BTW, I also saw a flock of wild turkeys during my round. :)

fun, clean course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

the grass is well groomed and it's easy to find your disc making this really convienent for beginners and intermediates. lots of great replay value

Cons:

some of the holes (especially the last one) run right by the side of the road making it easy to hit a car parked on the side.

Other Thoughts:

this course is definitely not for experts, but if you're below average like me, it's a lot of fun!
