Pros:

Holton DGC is located just outside of the small town of Holton, MI - about 20 minutes northeast of Muskegon. If you are coming from the main road (M-120), there is actually a sign at the end of Syers Rd in the town directing you towards the course. You will drive past the school complex on Syers Rd, then the road will turn to dirt for the last 1/2 mile or so. Look for a smallish sign "Holton Puke Squad Disc Golf" on your left and turn off into the smallish dirt parking lot. Yes, the sign says "Holton Disc Golf" and someone very neatly graffitied or otherwise added "PUKE SQUAD" in between.

The first tee is literally inches behind the chain link fence that marks the back of the parking lot. All 18 holes here have cement tee pads and tee signs. There were also trash cans at many tees. The tee signs are the smallest signs I have yet seen on a course. Each one is mounted on a 4x4 pole and the sign itself probably measures 4" x 6" or so. However, they do show a color layout of the hole as well as the hole number, distance rounded to the nearest 5', and arrow pointing from the basket to the next tee. The #9 tee sign also indicates where to walk back to the parking lot if you want to end your round at 9 holes, and a third arrow pointing towards "Horse Shoes". I didn't see this alternative recreation option available during my round. Anyway, I'm putting these tee signs under Pros but bring your reading glasses...

The baskets are all plain Chainstars and in good shape. The course starts out in a wide open field. The first three holes are all basically the same - throw 350'-400' straight across the flat field to a basket with no obstacles in between. Hole 4 is the same except that you are throwing parallel to the treeline. Hole 5 is shorter but otherwise like #1-3.

Hole 6 starts in the woods at the edge of the field, and kinks sharply right after a mando to a basket back out in the field. Holes 7-9 play in the woods at the edge of the field. Hole 8 has a V-shaped teepad and two separate lines to choose from as you aim your ace attempt at the basket 190' away.

Cons:

I enjoyed the front nine. Even though there weren't any obstacles on the open holes 1-5, it was a nice contrast with the tight wooded holes 6-9. The back nine mostly lacks this contrast. All of the back nine holes are wooded, and on most the lines are tight. Six of these back nine also measure under 200'. There is a slight downhill on hole 13 and uphill on 14, but nothing to write home about.

Hole 17 has some issues. At 325', this is the longest hole on the back nine by a significant margin. It's a straight throw with some thick low-lying brush that stretches across the entire fairway from about 100' off the tee to 50' from the basket. The ground here was a little muddy when I played, and it has been an unusually dry Michigan spring this year. This could be a disc-eating swamp after a little rain. Also on that same hole, any throws to the right of the fairway could hit other DG'ers near hole 11 basket/hole 12 tee. It's a blind hazard too due to trees and brush.

There is one other weird safety issue - after you finish up hole 18, you will have to walk a tight wooded trail back towards the parking lot. You'll round a corner and suddenly be walking up hole 10's fairway without realizing it. There isn't any signage to warn you and the trees/brush make this blind too.

No kiosk/map. The navigation is not difficult here and the arrows on the tee signs help, but this course would still benefit from a map. It's possible to easily play only the front nine or only the back nine, but you can't see the #10 tee from the parking lot so first-timers will never find it.

There are two baskets that look like they are for practice, but they are tucked into the woods near #9 basket and also not visible from the parking lot. There isn't much clear space around them to actually use them for practicing longer putts. These baskets should really be moved out to the parking lot area where there is plenty of room in the field.

The back nine is low-lying and was fairly buggy when I played. As I said it has been a dry spring, so I imagine the bugs could be awful after a summer rain.

Other Thoughts:

Apdrvya stated that this area was originally going to become two soccer fields. There is nothing here to attract non-DGers. To me this course had a private property vibe to it, but there isn't any signage anywhere to that effect. There are some odd things scattered in the forest near the course - wood structures here and there, a couple more trash cans, and for some reason a brand new looking red Chainstar basket (not matching the other plain baskets) in the middle of the woods behind hole 15's tee. The back nine definitely plays near someone's residence - I'm not sure if they own the course or not.

Overall this course is a decent play but not great. If whoever runs the course added better signage/a map, moved the practice baskets, and fixed the safety issues, I might bump my rating up to a 3.0. Even then, the course is just too short and flat to present a serious challenge for better DG'ers.

Pros:

Not very many people. Great for kids to play. 18 holes. First holes out in the open so you can get an idea of your straight shots and back holes good for your curve shots. This course has signs on every hole. Beautiful wooded area.

Cons:

Not very many cons. Some of the back holes could have trees cleaned up but it's not bad.

Pros:

Aesthetic-- plays through an area that was slated to become two soccer fields but that never happened. I can't see any other non-discgolfers out here but still be aware of your surroundings.

Teepads-- large, concrete, gnurled and in great condition. The way teepads should be.

Baskets-- ChainStars. The only thing discraft does right.

Routing and nav--pretty easy. The grass is cut and there are trails through the woods to help guide you. You will not get lost here, promise.

Challenge-- the challenge here is going to come mostly from the distance of the holes and the uncontrollables such as wind, sun and bugs.

Cons:

Variety-- none really to speak of. The first five holes play across a wide open field with the baskets dipping into alcoves in the wood lines. the wooded holes add a litle variation but are pretty short. Hole #8 has a split tee pad but I couldn't find a viable line for the left teepad.

Teesigns-- again, none. but I'm sure these are on the way.

Uncontrolables-- as mentioned above, you have little protection from uncontrollable factors such as wind, sun and bugs.
