Another So-So Church Course, But Finishes On A High Note

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- well maintained and clean property
- high quality Dynamic Patriot baskets
- nice incorporation of water hazards on holes 7 and 8
- a decent mix of hole lengths for a church course
- a few limited dips incorporated
- hole 9 ends pretty close to parking lot where tee 1 is

Cons:

- natural tees
- tee indicators are small reflectors with a hole number on them
- first three holes play right along road
- holes 1-5 are pretty wide open and repetitive
- almost entirely flat
- unclear navigation between holes 3 and 4

Other Thoughts:

It's hard to find much to say about this course. As church courses go, it's actually fairly decent. It is going to be boring for anyone besides a beginner and is very repetitive, but it at least has some good quality baskets. The tee "signs" (more like indicators) could use an upgrade and aren't the easiest to see from a distance.

The biggest con here is the course is mostly wide open and flat and besides holes 7 and 8, and perhaps to a lesser extent 6, they all look about the same. It's fine for a quick, casual round or for beginners but anyone else will be underwhelmed. I think the second biggest con is the safety factor - holes 1-3 throw pretty close to a road with decent traffic. It's a wide fairway, but given the average throwers are likely to be beginner churchgoers, an errant disc in the road seems like a high probability and something that should have been designed out.

Navigation is mostly straightforward except for the long walk across the parking lot between holes 3 and 4. You have to walk back from the basket for 3 near the road towards the greenhouses to find the stick for hole 4.

The pond is well incorporated as a minor water hazard for holes 7 and 8, with limited water carries that can be avoided by throwing around if desired. Note - this pond has leeches in it, so I don't advise entering - I pulled a disc out that was covered in them and decided I was just leaving this one on top of the next basket rather than scraping all the muck off to see if it had a name.

Overall, this is not one of the better courses in the northwest suburbs, but mediocre 9 holes seem to be the MO. I think this might be between a 1 and 1.5, really, but the property is very well maintained and has high quality baskets; there is really nothing wrong with the course besides the safety hazards on holes 1-3.

This course was deserted when I played and I expect it will always be that way unless there is a church event going on. I wouldn't advise showing up on a Sunday morning, but outside of that you should have it to yourself.

Simple & Easy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great for beginners! Need only a mid-range and a putter for course!

Good course to brush off the rust or rehone/practice throws after a bad round (if there is such a thing lol)!

No obstacles, expect pond/roadway parking lot on the last 3 holes.

Cons:

No tee pads. Snow markers for hole number. No map layout of hole. 2 holes hard to do "approach" walk prior to throw due to downward slope.

Other Thoughts:

Installing more permanent/visible tee markers would greatly lessen confusion to starting / where next tee is located.

Love the openness to, as mentioned before, rehone / shake off rust from winter.

New Course with Room for Improvement 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 New Baskets installed around edge of Church Property
- Great for beginners, lots of short and open holes
- Baskets placed near edge of presumably OB roads/parking lots adding challenge to otherwise short & open holes for more skilled players
- Udisc layout makes the course easy to navigate
- Holes 7 & 8 incorporate a small pond in the property and introduce a water hazard in a relatively non-intimidating way
- A lot of potential for longer safari holes, having grown up in the area this is low traffic area and a course I don't see being particularly busy aside from when the Church has events

Cons:

- Tee Areas currently marked by White Driveway Reflectors which are a couple of feet high which make it awkward to tee from directly behind them
- Reflectors do have numbered stickers on them to indicate the hole number
- No tee pads, hole maps, or next hole direction markers (generally can always see the next tee markers)
- First 4 holes are very repetitive in design, all similar length (~220-250 ft) and wide open
- Property lacks mature trees near the disc golf holes so I was always out in the sun, I felt really hot for a non-humid 80 degree day

Other Thoughts:

My thoughts while playing the course:
I thought the course was pretty boring and repetitive through hole 5. All were fairly straight and open holes not requiring a lot of thought or change in disc/throw style. However the stretch from 6-9 was able to change things up a bit and add more variety and obstacles into the way making me think about each shot.
Hole 6 was around 300 ft and near the treeline for the property, this forces the player to be careful on their drive/approach so they don't penetrate the brush/treeline(which also starts to slope downhill pretty quick).
Hole 7 was much shorter (~180 ft) but feature the pond to the left of the basket and you are throwing a bit downhill. This seemed late enough in the round for beginners to have some more confidence throwing near a water hazard while still being easy to avoid because the shorter distance doesn't tempt them from trying to throw too hard.
Hole 8 then plays across a corner of the pond and goes uphill. This is a pretty low stress water carry and multiple trees on the hole force a decision from the player to throw straight at it or try to hyzer around the trees.
Hole 9 is open but the basket sits on a small ridge/hill which adds importance to the placement of your drive/approach. I also found the slope of the hillside and the placement of the basket made for a more visually distinctive hole and a fun way to end the round.

Thoughts for Improvements:
- Changes to the Tee markers to something more low profile so they don't interfere with drives
- Tee pads aren't a real necessity, but maybe something like a toe board or two flatter markers to give a defined width to the tee areas
- For the front holes if possible maybe try and add a few trees, bushes, or other shrubs to incorporate some more obstacles into the throws
- Even adding trees near tees to get more shade for groups while they tee off
- A small board with a course map near hole one could be nice for players that don't use or know about UDisc
