A Well-Maintained but Uninspiring Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- very well-maintained course
- all baskets in pristine shape
- signage at every basket
- navigation is simple
- map at beginning of course
- tees, which slightly unconventional turf, are in good shape
- great place to try some open shots or try disc golf as a beginner
- some nice ace opportunities
- free to play

Cons:

- signage tends to be angled away from fairway which is slightly confusing
- tees are not as nice as concrete and may be slippery when wet
- almost no obstacles or elevation change makes for a very ordinary course
- lack of interesting shots won't attract visitors outside of locals or beginners
- only 9 holes
- all holes are very short, with the shortest at 120 ft
- some short shots go towards the road with not much buffer

Other Thoughts:

This course is in great shape and is a nice option for locals or beginners playing disc golf. It's also a nice location to practice some shots since there is some extensive open space. However, it is average at best - the shots are uninspired, as is typical of many midwestern disc golf courses. There is virtually no elevation change and most of the shots are wide open. That said, the last hole has the basket up on top of some rocks and the designers clearly did their best with the space they had. The Carol Stream Park District clearly takes good care of the space and maintains the land. It is nice to have the space for disc golf, but this isn't a course I'd probably go out of my way to go back to.

New Chicago 9'er! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Horizon Park is a small, city park that is mostly flat with few trees and almost no other obstacles to speak of. There is a school (I think?) next door to the park. The parking lot allows you to park right by the # 1 tee pad.

The course is new with rather nice amenities;
There is a nice course sign and map at the beginning.
The carpet tee pads are great for this course.
The new Discatchers have the yellow band and #.
The colored tee signs are excellent and give you the basic information.

The course is beginner short and features several wide open, short holes. Distances range from 120' to 250'. With the few obstacles and short distances here, Horizon DGC qualifies as an ideal course to bring that beginner, wife or girlfriend. Serious to intermediate players won't find much in the way of a challenge here.

# 8 did present a moderate little challenge. The hole is 230' but there is a fence 25-35' in front of the basket. A 25' ??? section of the fence straight on has been removed and players have the option of trying to throw through the narrow section is just trying to throw over the fence.

# 9 is 250' but plays to a well engineered raised basket. It's wide open so the raised basket presents the only challenge here.

Cons:

Definite lack of challenge for experienced players.
Some holes are open and a little bit unimaginative.
With five holes under 200' and nothing longer than 250'', big arms need not apply.

Other Thoughts:

Just another little Chicago 9'er, only this one was definitely designed for the beginner type player. I can the neighborhood middle school kids playing up a storm on this course.
I keep writing in my reviews, if you're a more serious type player, go play on one of the better courses around Chicagoland but I keep only finding these typical Chicago 9'ers. I guess Chicago area players may have to venture out of state to find these more competitive courses!
While not competitive or particularly challenging, they are an ideal vehicle for a course bagger like me to play 50 in eight days. And because this course was empty and a decent distance from prying eyes, I was able to change clothes, spruce up a bit, pack and repack and get to O'Hare for my flight home.

Beginners Paradise, Experienced Need Not Apply 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Horizon Park is a very nice, new 9 hole course that is clearly aimed at beginners. Experienced players should leave the bag behind; all you will need is a putter (and maybe a mid if you don't like driving with putters. The park is largely open, with a few trees to keep you honest on about half of the holes. Distances range from 120' to 250'.

Equipment is excellent; featuring brand new Innova Discatchers with large, yellow flags on top and the nicest astroturf tees that I've played on. The astroturf is laid over a solid, level frame with the top level with the surrounding ground. Signs are descriptive and attractive. Navigation is intuitive. There is even a practice basket by the parking lot.

As previously stated, about half of the holes are wide open. The other half make good use of what trees there are to force some line shaping. Hole 4 requires a 170' drive to a basket on a low mound that is protected by trees. The mound has been attractively landscaped with small boulders and mulch. One of the boulders is directly in front of the basket, wedge shaped and just below the top of the tray. It looks like it was put there to act as a ramp for potential skip or roller aces. Hole 8 seems to take some design cues from the bamboo hole at the USDGC. The hole is 230' with a 6' high fence perpendicular to the intended line and about 30' in front of the basket. A 20' section of the fence directly between the tee and basket has been removed. This gives players the choice to throw a dead straight shot or hyzer over the fence to the left or right. Hole 9 is a wide open 250' shot, but features an elevated basket on a small mound built up with small boulders and some stone steps.

Cons:

Length - With the longest hole at 250', new players will have to look elsewhere as their distance increases. At least one hole in the 300' range would have been nice, but I'm not sure there was space in this small park.

Challenge - For anyone other than a true beginner, there is very little challenge here. This is the kind of course where you expect to 2 every hole.

Lack of trees - While the 5 or so wide open holes are good for beginners to work on basic disc flight, they offer little to no challenge and require no line shaping.

Proximity of baskets to tees - There are quite a few tees that are near the circles edge of the previous basket. Considering how short the holes are, I don't see players buzzing the next tee too often. Due to the inconsistency of players learning the game though, I would like to see some bushes or small trees added to shield a few of the tees from overthrows.

Mowing patterns - Currently the grass is cut in two lengths: short in the narrow fairways and 6" high off of the fairways. As long as the grass off of the fairways remains close to this length, I have no problem with it. If the intention is for the area off of the fairways to become prairie; the inaccurate beginners will need significantly wider fairways to prevent backups due to searching for discs.

Other Thoughts:

This is a tough course for me to rate. I must compare it to all the other courses I've played. In that respect it ranks fairly low. As a beginner course though, it is very good. With a few tweaks, this could be a great place to learn the game.

New Course, Wide Open & Short 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 15, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Course is brand new. Artificial turf tee boxes, brand new baskets.
2. Great for beginners, as every hole is 200 feet or less. All Par 3.
3. I use this course as a warm up course before I go out and play the big ones.

Cons:

1. Not Challenging.
2. Very short.

Other Thoughts:

I'm happy that Carol Stream finally has a disc golf course, but I'm not sure why they chose this location, when we have tons of better places in the city where this could have been placed. I usually play this course by myself in about 20 minutes or so. It's so quick, but there are some positives to this course, like me being able to get my arm warm, or if I just want to play a quick 9.

Overall, it's a new course and in time, I'm hoping they add more trees to make it more difficult, as almost every single shot is straight. I feel like all they did was change the distances and call it a day. The best part about this course is the fact that it has the nicest baskets you can buy, and amazing tee boxes.
