Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great use of space.
Great for learning the potential of putters/mid-range discs.
It's all basically flat right now, so you can play several rounds without wearing yourself out.

Cons:

Really poor upkeep with the tee-boxes and baskets. I think they repaint the baskets once a year, but I don't think they care much about the otherwise.
Short tee boxes. I frequently stand beside the box to tee off so that I don't trip stepping up onto the concrete.
Short holes. I'm by no means a pro, or even the strongest arm out there, but I park or overthrow most of the holes even with my mid-ranges.

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course and it has a lot of potential. I've heard that this is the oldest course in NC, and that's great, but there is now room for improvement. There is a lot of unused land behind the 11th an 12th holes that could be used to add in a couple of really great distance holes.

Great for beginners 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Park is completely dedicated to disc golf
- The course goes back to the parking lot several times, so you can grab water, etc. mid-round
- Park is in pristine condition - they are proud of the park, and it shows.
- This park is an atypical NC park - it's basically wide open (as opposed to lots of trees!), but with enough mature trees to provide shade throughout alot of the round.

Cons:

- The holes a somewhat close together, so a slightly errant throw can put you in another's fairway.
- The holes are a little short, so pars are very achievable (not that this is bad, but
- It was really crowded, we played on Sunday afternoon and there were probably 10-12 groups playing.

Other Thoughts:

- I play with and 9 and 11 year old daughters (and a 5 yr old for a hole or two). This course was absolutely perfect for them - they could see the tee on every hole, and they were even able to par a few of them. Other courses where holes are > 300 ft, I'm on the "green" in two, and it takes them 5-6 shots to get close. It was crowded, but while waiting to tee on hole #9, we grabbed water, cookies, etc. There were even trash cans two holes later to dispose of the empties properly. This course is a little ways out of the way, but well worth it for the historically value (mentioned in other reviews). If you have young, beginning golfers, this is a MUST. If you are seasoned, this would be a course where the second round you could probably get a good line on several aces.

Nice Park, Very short Pitch and Putt 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Very Clean, well kept up park
Easy to navigate with signs and scorecards
Many ace opportunities
Hard to lose a disc here
Great beginner course

Cons:

All holes are short (under 300')
Very little in the way of elevation changes
Course is kind of tightly arranged and drives on several holes can reach the other tees

Other Thoughts:

Nice short, open beginner course, easy to find and well kept up. I wish it was a little more spread out and challenging.

Bring a midrange and a putter 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This a good course for high intermediate, advanced, and pros to get some practice throwing midrange and putters off of the tee.

The course is kept in great shape and there are very few areas that show signs of errosion. These areas are generally at the back of a few teepads.

There are tee signs which shows the distance and the route to the basket. Flow from one teepad to the next is pretty obvious.

There is a box with scorecards at the first tee.

This can be a good beginner's course if...

Cons:

They need to do something about the baskets. These are Mach I baskets with an additional set of chains added. The chains are very stiff and it kicks a lot of solid putts out. The way the second layer of chains were added also tends to kick good putts out as well.

The baskets are also lower to the ground which takes a while to get use to.

Other Thoughts:

The longest hole by footage 300 ft and it is slightly downhill which means it plays closer to 270. The following hole is 280 feet uphill but it plays as if it is closer to 300. There is enough land near these holes that the park owns and is not using that could be used to make these 2 holes a little longer and more challenging.

There is an alternate set up that is used in some tournaments. This alternate setup is much better than the original course and it is sad that the alternate course is not used more.

I live close to this course, but would prefer to drive a little farther to get to better courses. I would only come out and play this course if I needed to work on throwing midrange discs and putters.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Quite a beautiful area. In a clean park, and easy to find. Some interesting holes, with a good mix of difficulties. The barn (#14) is a fun challenge. Tees are well-managed, and signage is obvious and clear.

Cons:

Gets heavy traffic at times. If you overthrow some baskets, you risk getting your disc crunched by cars. Some baskets are right on top of each other, and it's difficult to know which is yours.

Other Thoughts:

Designers were generous with the strokes--this could have easily been a course of all par 3s.

Beautiful Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was a really beautiful course. It is set in a mostly-open field/meadow. It has scorecards and a map on the course. Navigation is easy. Good course for beginners. Good signage, great navigation. They did all they could with the land and space available. Minimal risk of losing discs. I played this course when my max distance was about 250', still manged to shoot way under par, and I had a blast.

Cons:

Not really challenging. Short tees. Short holes. Baskets are a little close to the next tee, so just keep a heads-up. Other than that, there's not a lot to say that's bad. Can get crowded.

Other Thoughts:

For me, this was a fun course for my skill level. I'm sure that I would get tired of it if I played it a lot. Bathrooms on site. All holes are under 300'. I think it's the oldest course in the state and it shows. The holes cannot stand up to modern distance drivers and disc technology, but don't let that stop you. If you want to get someone hooked on the game, start here. Bring a mid-range and a putter and cut loose.

Pros:

Along with Bull Run in Va, Horizons Park is the best course I've seen to introduce someone to disc golf. It is also the oldest course in NC, so it has some historical significance, but without the erosion that you commonly see on old courses. The combo of well-maintained grass and huge trees scattered around paint an aethestically pleasing picture. Totally relaxing disc golf.

Cons:

As your game improves you could outgrow this course.

Other Thoughts:

Horizons Park fills a need as an introductory course and acheives it with flying colors.

This is a great example of a classic disc golf course. The park is very rustic and pretty. The course also flows very well from hole to hole.

Cons:

Not a difficult course, and it is very short. I used a putter all day except on 2 holes (a Buzzz). Older Mach 1 baskets, and short tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

If I was in the area, I would play it again. It's a pretty and calming park. I'd leave the bag in the truck and just bring 1 putter and 1 midrange.

Pros:

You can play the course with ultrastars, and still shoot under par.
Fun factor is great here.
Old trees are intermixed into the fairways, very eye catching.
Great temp course out there during the Horizon's park classic.
Neat Triad disc league club out there during most of the week.

Cons:

The baskets there are in pretty rough shape. They have a tendancy not to catch much of anything.
Several shots face right at a parking lot, this isn't too good. I've had my car hit a few times out there more than I would care for.
No drivers at all on this course... No variety of shots other than putters and mids.

Other Thoughts:

Really cute course, for those that are travelling you have to play it just to pay homage to the first course in NC. I mean, its pretty historic for our sport.

Short n sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a small flat area of a park that seemed to be entirely devoted to disc golf. There were no conflicts with other park uses on the course, which is always nice. Most of the course plays through and around a large stand of mature trees with a high canopy and no underbrush.

The trees mean that most of the holes have multiple options to choose from, with different levels of challenge to the various routes. Often there is one more obvious route, and on these there was an ok mix of right/left holes, with most playing fairly straight ahead.

The signs were great, and made the course even easier to follow, the flow was already good with no awkward walks on this course. The grounds are very nice, and for a park course this is pretty scenic and well-maintained. The barn hole was a fun touch, and an obstacle that gets in your head a little.

Cons:

The course really has no length, just about every hole is an ace run for more experienced players. There aren't many holes that really force a variety of shots, you could score well here with nothing but hyzers from either hand.

The course is pretty packed in to a small area, meaning that often errant throws from one hole end up on other fairways which can be a safety issue if there are lots of people playing. We played on a nice weekday evening, and the course was packed with people. All were friendly and courteous, but it makes for a slow round with lots of "fore" heard.

The tees are tiny, and not in great shape, luckily you won't need much of a runup on anything here. The baskets were a little dated and low, but still caught just fine.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a fantastic course for a fun round with friends, or as a place to learn the game. You're not going to lose a disc here, and there's enough to make it an interesting round but not too challenging for new players. More experienced throwers aren't going to find a lot of challenges here, but it is fun to go for lots of ace runs and birdies.

If you have the chance, this course is worth the stop for a fun and quick round. It's nothing special, but it is enjoyable and an older course that has held up well.

- Trees provide challenges on a few holes
- Good for practicing driving with your putters and midranges
- Every hole is ace-able
- Good view of the mountains

Cons:

- The baskets seem shorter than normal and they also like to spit out puts that aren't dead center.
- Course is on the short side
- Some tees aren't quite level, and some can have a lot of mud pits after rain.

Other Thoughts:

I joined the local league and they put on some fun events and are pretty cool guys. I suggest joining the club if you play here a lot.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Trees provide interesting obstacles. The people are normally friendly that play there, including some regulars. There are squirrels that provide some entertainment and it is right across from a dog park so you can play then go let your dog run around. There are picnic tables so you can go practice/play and eat there. There is a shot that you have to make around a barn, it adds a nice challenge. I've seen people hit the barn, cause their disc to go over or on top of the barn. The tee pads are concrete, and everything is numbered.

Cons:

Leaves!! It is really easy to loose your disc in the leaves. You shoot between trees because this course snakes around. There isn't really long shots, There are at least two holes that if you are a long driver you could cause your disc to go into the road.

Squirrels that walk course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

very well maintained, beautiful area, with across the street fenced in dog area for pet lovers that don't want there frisbees chewed. Nice open areas, with "wooded" center course. Fun tournaments that are held somewhat regularly. Locals are all pretty friendly. Concrete pads.

Cons:

Not too much variety, with most holes not more than 300 feet. It can get crowded at times, especially during tourneys and sunny days. Only one pin position per basket, with one launch pad.

Other Thoughts:

When I first moved to the area and started visiting the park, the first thing I noticed were the either fearless squirrels or extremely laid back, perhaps lazy squirrels. They do everything in there power to walk, so they make great putting practice, lol (kidding: please don't hurt the poor devils!) this is a great beginner course, but not for those of greater distance and skill who like a challenge.

nice view 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice park, good signage, concrete tees, lovely views of surrounding hillsides. Nice big trees. Impossible to get lost. The course is quite charming, you kind of felt like your grandma was going to bring you a glass of iced tea any moment. Squirrels were fearless. Well mowed, clean park.

Cons:

I have pants longer than the tee pads. Holes overlap each other a bit, high risk in hitting other players. Very open, which is fine although I prefer wooded, but the course felt like it was put in someone's big yard. Quite short, quite easy, unimaginative layout. The weird thing about the course is that there is this great expanse of rolling land beside the course that would have greatly relieved this course of its problems. Some of the baskets were bent with loose chains but were all functional.

Other Thoughts:

I know this course is historic, but I was underwhelmed. I'm not saying it isn't good, it stands the test of time for sure, but it just isn't a 3 disc rated course in my eyes. It's like the girl next door that you never really found attractive but was nice enough that you eventually ended up marrying her but all along you can't keep from thinking about other, more attractive courses. Yeah, that's about it.

Beautiful, short course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- I loved the setting with the rolling hills surrounding the course. It's definitely open with plenty of natural beauty.

- The trees in the middle of the course are deceptively challenging. Maybe it was because I was having a subpar round that day, but I seemed to find the trees more than I thought I would. Although there is no true "wooded" portion of the course, the few trees that are there do provide an obstacle.

- If your midrange game is lacking - as mine is lately - this is a great course to practice those shots.

- I like #14 with the barn in play. It's not a particularly difficult shot and can be avoided with a smart throw, but it does add a different element to the course. It hooked at least one person in as I heard a loud thud off the barn from the group playing behind us that day.

- The free scorecards were a nice touch.

Cons:

- I have to echo the comment about the short tee pads. For someone 6'6" like me, that definitely came into play. Luckily, most of the holes don't require much of a run-up, but it's still something that distracts you when you need to be focusing on your throw.

- Also mentioned before, but the low baskets are another disadvantage to the taller player.

- Many of the holes seemed similar or just didn't have enough distinction for my taste. For me, that was especially true of the "wooded" holes near the center of the course.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, I enjoyed the course and would play it again if I were in the area. I was surprised to read on here that the course often gets crowded, because it wasn't too bad on the Saturday we played. That was earlier in the day, though, so that could have been a factor.

Pros:

The best part of this course is the signage. It is definitely the best I've seen. The course is very beginner friendly. There are plenty of holes where you have to create a line, which is great for teaching the basics of the game.

Cons:

Way too easy. Some locals have been known to routinely score 12-14 under par. The course is often be very busy and the holes can run on top of one another. Not many hyzer/anhyzer holes. Almost all of the wooded holes require straight line 200-250ft drives. Lots of families/groups of bros.

Other Thoughts:

This is basically a place to get a hold for the game of to keep sharp. It can be good for intermediate player trying to practice driving the basket.

B = Be a little too open and a little too bland 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- C-
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- B
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- B+
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- B+
5) Multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- NA

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I can add anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.
