As Billy Beane Said, “This Disc Golf Course Is 50 Feet Of Crap”…Or Something Like That, Right?

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

No.

Wait, do I have to include pros on these? Is that a rule?

I mean, the park is nice, and I found eight baskets on the course. Which is at least four more than I expected to find if we're being honest.

If you want me to think of more nice things to say about this course, I will require payment in either US Dollars or Bergs.

Cons:

Pretty much everything else.

Signage is virtually non-existent. Holes 5 and 9 were the only holes with signs, and these signs only give the hole number, and an arrow, as if to say "the basket is in that direction, good luck and may the disc golf gods have mercy on your soul." since hole 1 doesn't have a sign, and there's no course sign either, there is nothing to tell you where hole one starts. With hole 1 being a little hidden around some foliage, you could easily miss spotting the basket all together. UDisc has the course layout, but I believe you shouldn't need an app to play a course correctly. Any newbie that wants to give disc golf a go should be able to figure out the course layout on their own. With the overgrowth on the course and lack of signage, even just playing from the previous basket to the next one is virtually impossible without UDisc.

Teepads: They don't exist. And not in the "there's no turf or concrete" sense so much as "most of the tee areas are pretty uneven, overgrown, indistinguishable from everything else around them, or impossible to throw from because of footing" sense.

Baskets are showing their age with the fading on the bands. They otherwise look like they are in decent shape to be honest, but the baskets that are in the woods are overgrown. I was not able to find the pin for hole 2, and if you tell me it's still there I won't believe you.

Course Maintenance is nonexistent. The fields and non-wooded areas of the park are well taken care of and were freshly mowed. Any thing in the woods though is an afterthought, including what looked like trails as well as the disc golf course itself. All of the fairways and greens in the woods were completely overgrown. To say there was a fairway on holes 2, 3, and 6 would be an outright lie, with holes 4 and 5 also being significantly overgrown with the smallest of exceptions for what could be called a path if you were to stretch the definition of that word as far as you could possible muster. The overgrowth on these holes is to the point where one could potentially lose discs on a long putt, let along a throw from the "tee".

Other Thoughts:

The last course condition update of this course was from 2018 and said the course was unplayable, with multiple baskets and signs missing. After playing nearby Woodland Chains, I decided to go take a look at this course since this course is out kind of on its own and I refused to drive 45 minutes from my home just to potentially find nothing here.

There was honestly more at Horner Park than I was expecting, but the course was still virtually unplayable. Even if you did use UDisc to find the intended locations of the tees, the wooded fairways are so overgrown that losing at least one disc would be a near certainty. With how some of the fairways bend, some landing zones are blind, which could make for a fun course design if the course was also taken care of. Hole 6 was gnarly to walk through, and hole 3 was virtually impossible to traverse, with the added benefit of the basket being nearly completely hidden from where the "tee" is.

The course itself, if you imagine the maintenance and signage being good", can make for a fun 9 hole course that could cater to a wide range of skill levels. I fully believe this course was worthy of the 2.5 and 3 ratings it has received from previous reviewers in 2016 and 2017. Some of the wooded areas of this park honestly seemed very nice, with the other side of a creek bed along the wooded holes looking like it could make for some nice nature trails or disc golf holes that would have much less of an overgrowth problem. When looking at the rest of the park, it's clear that the parks department has the capability to maintain a very nice park, and the park itself was packed with people when I was here. Every shelter was taken up by parties, the playgrounds were full, and multiple groups/families were fishing at the lake. It's a shame that there are 8 (9?) disc golf baskets abandoned in this park and not getting any use. On UDisc, you will find just one round played here this year by a user named "justfaking", which is an appropriate name because I don't believe they played a full round here in the last month. You sit on a throne of lies, sir or madam.

With some clearing of the wooded holes of underbrush and the addition of some simple signage, this course could at least be playable and even fun. As it currently sits though, Horner Park has made me rethink what a zero out of five truly is. Sorry T. R. Hughes, you have a half a disc heading you way soon.

If you're the most dedicated of course baggers, by all means try to play a round at Horner Park. Otherwise, there are dozens of courses in the greater St. Louis area, and I can confidently recommend every other one of them before this course. Here's hoping that these baskets find a better home in the future.

It's a hike 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a scenic hike through the park, the woods, the valleys, and along side a creek. (#5) Oh yeah, and there's a 9 basket disc golf course there!!

Course made good use of the elevation and the wooded areas of the park. Flow was really good as well, except the 8-9 hike (see cons)

Some of the memorable holes:
#1 Across a valley to a basket on the side of a small hill.
#2 Down and up through a narrow opening in the trees, which is probably even more challenging when the leaves are out
#5 A short throw diagonally across a small creek (no fear of losing disc) which runs from tee to basket.
#7 A straight throw through a fairway that has two very mature trees diagonally placed as basket protection.
and #9 Another down and up throw, this one is dog leg left.

Cons:

Tee pads were "natural" and inconsistent from hole to hole.
Signage was large white placard board (18 x 24) with only hole number and arrow pointing direction and was missing on #3 and #8. Just picked a logical spot and threw....
Walk from #8 to #9 was too far to conclude the course like that.

Other Thoughts:

All the above said, I realize I did enjoy the quality of the holes themselves, even if the course quality wasn't there (hope that makes sense!!) In fact I upped my score half a point from my original thought.

Course looks like it is being reconfigured. I found one old sign where there was no longer a basket to throw to and the tee markers for another were faced where it looked like there used to be a basket.

Course just needs signage with distance markers and it gains a half point from me, concrete pads another half point.

This was course #1 of a 4 course Sunday trip through south central Illinois. In hindsight, it was the most fun of the 4 courses that I played!

Quick Throw Passing Through 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- New course in rural area.
- Alot of potential for future plans.
- Basket placement offers some shot shaping.
- Quiet area and clean

Cons:

-Next hole markers are needed as it can be confusing to locate Tees.
- Being a new course some growth on wooded holes need groomed.

Other Thoughts:

This a new course and fun 9'er. If locals appreciate the course. It will be a very good course.
