map needs updating - big time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

quiet, easy walk. some very fun shots. Tees are nice and more are getting constructed / rebuilt.

Cons:

very challenging to navigate after hole 6. Yes there is some construction going on and a massive tree stockpiling / cutting operation in the middle of the back nine. Maybe things will stabilize come summertime - very frustrating to have such a mismatch between the 'map' and what is actually out there. That said, it was fun whipping it thru the trees. A chainsaw party would do the place some serious good - lots of just 'chuck it and hope' shots. Most of them, in fact. A pleasant walk thru dense forest with baskets

Other Thoughts:

whoever is the shepherd of this course needs to update the mapping / clarify the route. Maybe its just too early in the season to be asking this much. Just a few directionality arrows / prompts would be very very handy here after hole 6.

Nice Scenery, Tricky to Navigate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- The course is in some very nice wooded scenery.
- The baskets and the rubber tee pads are generally in good shape.
- Easy to find your disc.
- Wasn't very crowded on a Saturday afternoon.
- The trees make the course very tricky and interesting.

Cons:

- The back nine is not as enjoyable as the front nine.
- Some construction starts influencing the course at hole 13.
- Then you have a reservoir zone breathing down you neck at hole 14.
- It's flat.
- Some of the holes required some guessing to find. We couldn't find the tee pad on hole 18 at all.
- So many tree obstacles!

Pros:

Hyzer Pines DGC is a great course in Sisters Or. This course has a lot of great things like the tee signs work great. Even though the teepads are rubber hey work really well.

- All the holes are basically the same as they all play through gorse and a lot of trees. I would say this is about the same as pine nursery in Bend Or.
- All the holes are pretty close together so the navigation is real easy.
- I found some of the holes real interesting like number 9 it looked like you were throwing in to one giant bush. But it was just a bunch of little bushes.
-There can be some low hanging branches on some of the holes.
- There is a very nice info board at the first tee with a map.

Cons:

-There can be some low hanging branches on some of the holes.
Also there is a ton of dust there. I banged my shoes out a the end and there was a huge cloud of dust.
- I am not a huge fan of how many bushes there are in the fairways and I had to take about 2-5 minutes looking for my
disc.

Other Thoughts:

Hyzer Pines is a great course I might be back there to play it again but I am not sure.

Throwing My Hyzer At Hyzer Pines! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

A sign at the beginning says the Rebel Disc Club is responsible for this excellent course. I understand that the club name has now changed to the Central Oregon Disc Club. Oh well, nice job to whomever is responsible.

The course sits in a lovely Ponderosa Pine forest. At this altitude, there is little underbrush and the trees are scattered on this totally flat piece of land. I found this refreshing after playing a couple of typical Oregon jungle courses on previous days. Sisters makes for a nice pit stop on your drive from central Oregon (Bend/Sunriver) across the pass to the I-5 corridor and Eugene and Salem. Harsh, snowy winters might make this more of a three seasons courses although maybe these central Oregon golfers are tougher than me and might play year around.

The course features a practice basket, nice cut out signs w/sponsors, rubber mats, benches and older Discatchers with the yellow rings.

There are two or three baskets placements on each hole. These can vary in length up to 150' or more. The tee signs have the washer system in place so that helped.

The course has enough length so I wouldn't call it a Rec course as the scattered trees make it fairly easy to stay out of serious trouble. Playing alone, I found navigation to be instinctive and fairly easy.

Cons:

I agree with other reviewers that the openness and flat terrain here do tend to be repetitive. But although the holes were similar, I really enjoyed my round.

The hole length was also fairly constant. I always like to see a couple of ACE runs, even on championship caliber courses. I thought the raised basket on 18th would have been better placed on a shorter ACE run type of hole, one playing somewhere between 175-225'.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoyed the course. Enjoyed my round here. This high and dry climate makes for some wonderful disc golf weather. The course gets beat up a lot for being flat (especially with all the wonderful mountainous terrain so close by) but the designers and club have created a great 18 here using the forest well.

Pondo Paradise 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple pins for every hole
Multiple tees for some holes
Some Par 4's depending on settings
Good tees
Great signage
Easy to navigate
Well maintained
Active club
Beautiful area

Cons:

The course is set in a Ponderosa pine forest which is beautiful but flat and very much the same throughout - no real variation in terrain.

Other Thoughts:

I love Hyzer Pines and have a great time playing there every time I get the chance. It is playable year round, and being on the "dry side" of Oregon, this means you can usually expect some sunshine and overall good conditions. One of the things I like about it is also the only real drawback to this course, and that is the setting in a beautiful Pondersosa Pine forest. Big trees, sagebrush, sandy soil, on every hole. No elevation to be had on the site, and other than a water treatment pond to the side of one hole, no water in play. But that's not a knock on the design, it's just what is there. It's fun golf, especially for those of us used to playing in thick undergrowth forests. This course has big trees and sparse sagebrush, and other than sometimes getting disoriented by the sameness of the ground cover, it is hard to lose track of your disc.

The fairways are fair and challenging, carved between the Pondos. With up to three pin settings on every hole, and some holes having long tees, there is a lot of variety available on this course. Some of the longer settings reach past 700', and there are also plenty of reachable pins from the tee, if you can control your drive. There is nothing tricky or gimmicky about this course - hit your lines and you will be rewarded, miss your lines and you will hit trees. The variation in right, left, short and long is very well incorporated into the design, with perhaps a slight skew towards right turning holes, which some may say favors sidearm or lefties. So be it - haven't we all seen enough righty hyzer holes by now? And those are still here too. With the multiple pin settings on this course there is something for eveyone.

Another fun aspect of this course for those of us coming from sea level is the altitude. It's not exactly alpine golf but your discs will be more stable. So it's fun to grab some of that flippy plastic and carve your lines. The local club The Central Oregon Disc Golf Club (formerly Hyzer Desert Rebels) has done an outstanding job getting this course installed on the grounds of the SOAR community center on school district property and keeping it there and well maintained. This is the only public 18 hole disc golf course in Central Oregon. There is plentiful camping nearby and Sisters, OR is a beautiful part of the state. If you are in the area, this is a must play course. No drinking or smoking on school district grounds and please throw a few bucks in the donation box to keep the improvements coming!

Best in Central Oregon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love the setting. The tall ponderosa pines are dense enough to make it challenging, but not impossible. It has never been busy in all the times I have played it. Sometimes it seems as though you are the only one out there. It has some really good holes also a good mix of short and long holes.

Cons:

It is dusty, but everything is dusty in Central Oregon

Other Thoughts:

Central Oregon and Bend specifically need more courses. The active lifestyle we live here lends itself to being outdoors doing fun things. What is more fun than disc golf? The 9 hole course at the college is not enough for the Bendites! We need another course or two.

Back nine not cut out correctly. Needs improvement.

Other Thoughts:

The 18th hole is a new challenge, liked the touch.
