really nice! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

I G Levy Park is a great community area with two parking lots and developed areas, and a natural area between two neighborhoods connecting each park entrance with a gravel walkway/bike path. The disc golf course starts in the northern area of the park, plays through the woods area, around the southern area, then back through the woods in the middle, and back up to the pond in the northern area.

The course design is great. There doesn't seem to be a lot to work with here, but whoever designed this made the most of what they had, and seems to have a good understanding of the game. I know it says the course was built in 2003, but it's obviously been updated since then with new equipment, maps, tee pads, and I'm guessing a redesign at some point.

Concrete tee pads are a good size given that some of these holes are pretty long. The baskets are in good condition.

The length of the holes is a little long for new players, and even some 'tweeners (a couple 400', and a 500' par 3). I managed to shoot even par, maybe 1 over after a couple bad holes (it was windy ok?), and my friend shot like 30 something over par. Still though, I really enjoyed the shape of the fairways, use of the creek on several holes and the lake on hole 18.

Cons:

It gets a little close to out of bounds parking lot/apartment building on a couple holes. It is kind of inevitable though with the tight space.

Navigation is pretty straight forward, but very hard to get started. There's no sign on hole one, and the teepad is kind of oddly proportioned for a disc golf tee. But the map is fairly accurate on placement. This app seems a little off on distances. The tee's gave some different distances than the dgcr scoring app, and it was hard to tell which was more accurate.

The signs were on small pvc pipe posts, and could be hard to read, but very well detailed if you need to find the basket

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course. It was cold and a little muddy when I was there, but if it were dry and comfortable, it would be a great local course. It plays near but not too dangerously close to some other park amenities. Frankly I was very surprised it wasn't crowded on a sunny saturday because I would love to play this course more often

Pascagoula - worth a stop 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Free to play

-Nice, well maintained park, not hard to find. There's a restroom at both North & South. There are also occasional garbage cans and benches along the course. IG Levy North is also a bird sanctuary, I saw a group of at least a dozen canadian geese on the soccer field and tons of muscovy ducks.

- Variety of long bombers, ace runs and in-betweens. Some open shots, some wooded, plus a couple water hazards.

- Signage is in pretty decent condition, Tee signs are small white pvc posts about 18-24" tall. Most baskets have "Next basket" sign w/ arrow.

Cons:

- Lack of elevation - maybe a couple hanging baskets could fix this?

- Drainage/No bagholders - not a big deal but on a soggy day like yesterday they would have been nice, at least on drives. That being said some of the tees also get flooded out.

- I can see how proximity to things like the soccer field and skate park possibly could render some holes unplayable to some players.

- There are some navigation issues (see below)

Other Thoughts:

- Natural tees.

- The previous two reviews are still pretty much valid and worth a read. I played on a chilly, soggy day w/ not a lot of people at the park. I only saw three other golfers the whole time and they were starting as I was finishing. I think Pascagoula has got a pretty decent course going on here - I've seen worse layouts on better grounds. The map, while not to scale, was very helpful though I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have too many issues w/o it except on the following holes: - (as stated before) the basket for 9 is near the skate park; to get to tee 10 you have to double-back almost to 8's basket near the park entrance. Here it gets confusing- from what I've read this may be an old issue but for newcomers: the basket for 15 is marked 14, 14 is marked 13, and 13 is just missing. This results in the basket for 14 being marked 13 yet pointing you to 15 - it's a little confusing to a first-timer, I'm sure locals know what's up. If you have the map you'll find a hole in the ground where the basket for 13 should be.

- Despite these issues I'd play here again - I've yet to play Shepard State Park in Gautier but I did personally enjoy this course more than Bulldog Bayou. If I were a local I'd be pretty happy.

Recent upgrades a big help! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Recently installed, PVC filled with concrete, Tee Markers on every hole, makes it much easier to navigate without a map.

'Next Tee' arrows hanging under every basket to direct you to the next tee. (edit: there are no "next tee" markers anymore)

Course starts and finishes near the Scranton Nature Center, scorecards available inside Nature Center.

Restrooms at both ends of park. Trash cans throughout park as well as recycle bins.

Cons:

Fairly long walk back from 9's basket to 10's tee.
I usually play hole 10 before hole 9, since hole 11 is directly across the parking lot from 9's basket, near the corner of the tennis courts.

(edit: They fixed this problem by renumbering 9 and 10. More intuitive than the old layout.)

Other Thoughts:

This is a great little course that requires a fair amount of control, but not a massive arm.
Variety of shots required.
Hole 1 and 16 give you the opportunity to "air it out". Hole 5 hard left turn with trees on your left and the creek on your right.
Hole 8 has two fairways through the trees for RHBH or LHBH.

A few places to lose a disc, over the fence of the Naval installation along hole 10, or possibly in the creek that cuts through the park by holes 5, 6, and 7. The creek is usually pretty shallow unless it has rained recently.
Holes 17 and 18 play over water but are easily manageable.

Good Local Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It has a great mix of long and short holes, and great use of a creek and the pond. Lots of different wholes and is a great place for beginners and experts alike. The course is beautiful in the spring and summer and the foliage is thick and in the fall and winter is open.

Cons:

Tee pads are natural and many are very uneven. Signs for the wholes are always broken or non existent and the baskets are only single chained. Some of the tress and growth get in the way of the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

It would be nice to see a course map at the park and scorecards.

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Great layout. A few holes are a bit challenging due to trees, but overall a good day on the greens. Water hazards on four holes and construction closes three, but alternate tees make up the difference.

Cons:

The tree hazards on five holes are a bit to deal with but you can easily deal with them if you go for accuracy instead of distance.

Other Thoughts:

I'm kinda biased because it's my home course, but it is worth the walk...
